Description

(Now a Mosaic Audio production, narrated by MacLeod Andrews!)

Nate Daniels is on a quest to find his parents, taken from him when he was only four years old. Now a high school senior, armed only with his snark and an unshakable belief that his parents are still alive, Nate enters the final phase of his lifelong quest.

Soon, however, a former teacher introduces him to the fantasy realm of Ileria—an amazingly realistic RPG sim unlike any he’s played before. Could Ileria hold the key to his search or is it merely a fun side-quest? Nate must find new friends and forge new relationships as he navigates high school drama, a prickly adoptive brother, and an ever-changing relationship with his bestie, Jan. Oh, and let's not forget the 400-pound telepathic Ilerian murder-cat who just might help him piece it all together—if she doesn’t eviscerate him first.

The Prince of Ileria by Daniel Fite is an absolute gem of a fantasy adventure that blends portal fantasy with modern-day charm, sharp humor, and genuine emotional depth. It follows Nate Daniels, a sharp-witted high school senior on a mission to uncover the truth behind his parents’ mysterious disappearance. What begins as a relatable coming-of-age tale quickly spirals into something much bigger when Nate stumbles into Florian’s Realm—a strange game store with a much deeper purpose. What makes this story so compelling is how it effortlessly balances the fantastical with the grounded. The fantasy world is lush and imaginative, filled with striking details like towering mechs, elegant elven warriors, and ancient magics, all described with vivid imagery that makes you feel like you’re right there beside Nate. But it’s not just about the setting—the heart of the story lies in its characters.
Nate’s bond with his adoptive brother Thomas, who has brittle bone disease, is written with such honesty and complexity that it feels refreshingly real. Their banter is hilarious, their arguments are raw, and their love for each other is unmistakable. The supporting cast is just as strong, from Nate’s fiercely loyal best friend Jan to a 400-pound telepathic murder-cat that manages to be both terrifying and weirdly endearing. These relationships, full of humor, tension, and growth, elevate the story beyond your typical fantasy romp. The pacing is tight, the stakes are personal and epic at once, and there’s always a twist or emotional gut-punch waiting just around the corner. Fite’s writing strikes that perfect balance of being clever without being smug, emotional without being melodramatic, and fantastical without ever losing its emotional core.
And if reading isn't your preferred medium, the audiobook version—narrated by the incredibly talented MacLeod Andrews—adds a whole new layer of immersion, capturing every bit of the wit, tension, and wonder. Whether you’re a longtime fantasy f

Haven't read all of it, just a few of the beginning chapters. I liked the character interactions, the overall pace and flow between paragraphs and plot points, as well as the 'liveliness' of the descriptions - I couldn't understand some of the references, just a me problem though. Overall, great uploading consistency and great potential, I can see the effort put behind the story and its progression.

Imagine that Billy Batson from the movie turned 16 and became an RPG nerd.
Now Imagine he inherited the powers of Kirito instead of a wizard.
And he even has a crippled brother a year younger, those Nate's is a bit more of an asshole.
That's basically this story so far.  The story is pretty good so far, with the guy looking for his parents and ending up in a video game, though he doesn't get stuck.
The characterization is good and it is well written.  The MC definitely feels like a nerd that is looking for his parents.
