The beast and the Swallow is definitely worth checking out. Even if romance isn't your thing, the story actually has a lot going on and is very entertaining.
Stylistically, I actually like the fact that the story is slower than most on RR. It really gives you time to soak in the setting and character interactions. It gives the sstory time to 'breathe' and for plot elements to organically develop, rather than being rushed and delivered half baked.
The grammar is mostly fine. There are some issues with incorrect word choices every so often due to a language barrier, but the author is pretty on top of making corrections and is very nice about it.
I think I have guessed at the final plot of the story, which I am conflicted over, if true. However, this story is much more journey oriented than destination, so it actually isn't a big deal.
The majority of the characters are very well written and are readily recognisable from one another by dialogue alone. The relationships between the characters are all very convincing and feel organic too.
Magic, religion and ethnicity all being intertwined so heavily actually introduces a number of problems. I can't actually discuss it at all without spoilers, but the primary antagonists religion and magic system are incredibly overpowered and oh so incredibly evil as a default. The 'good guy' practitioners focus heaily on defensive spells to counter...the rest of the religion....really not seeing how the stand in for the catholic church didn't push for a ethnic cull.
Anywho, the stories a fun read and you should check it out.

Good stuff right here. It's the standard idea of romance, that includes the big softie, the one hated by their family, and the comedic relief. All of these roles are done perfectly and without complaints from me.Style is what you expect. Grammar is perfect. There are tropes but it's done in a good way.5/5 from me

If you are looking for a fantasy romance about a couple that should have never been then you came to the right place. It's a great tale of love, power, politics, and most recently scheming. Read the story of Lorelei, the duchess of Norden, as she transforms from a nobody into a graceful white swallow that soars freely and can capture the hearts of many including the most hardened beasts.
    Style:
A third-person story that mainly follows the primary MCs though we do get some thoughts from surrounding characters. The author's writing style is very descriptive and they do a lot of research for their story. This is shown within the work and within the end of the chapter "Fun Fact" section to help you understand more about why the author wrote something. It stays purely character-driven the whole story and plot only really affects the beginning to get the ball rolling and around chapter 30 to get the action going.
    Grammar:
My rating is based on two things. First is that the author is not a native speaker so I am less judgemental in my rating as the author does a fantastic job of describing the word. The second is that despite the errors the story is coherent and you can understand what the author intended.
Yes, there are a fair bit of spelling errors such as "ate" when the author meant "are" or missed letters in words but that is only more apparent in the latter chapters. The beginning chapters have been polished mostly because that is what most people have read and the author has received feedback and fixed mistakes. All and all a great job though.
    Story:
The story starts out slow it gets better the further you go. We begin at the night of the forced wedding and then go to the boat arc. This beginning section is really to develop the characters and the world for all the future chapters. Once the newlyweds arrive in Norden, this is where the story begins to really grow and conflict arises. We learn a lot about the culture of this land and are introduced to magic. We are al

This story was really fun to read, and at the end of the day isn't that what we're here for? There are plenty of cliches being utilized here, but it's put together with such good-quality prose and obvious passion that it has the potential to really grab you and keep you.It has it's problems, it has plotpoints that in my opinion might have worked better if done differently, but at the end of the day the simple fact is that I read my way through the first book in one sitting, so I can't deny that this is a really enjoyable story. Absolutely worth a try for anyone even remotely intrigued by the premise.

All the other reviews talk about the very high quality of the writing and how well it is researched so I won't talk about that anymore. I just want to add that the factoids at the bottom of each chapter relating to the setting are very entertaining.RoyalRoad is not known for romance stories, and the little of the romance genre we get on this site are usually side stories that don't get handled too well. Hence, I feel that there's a certain assumption that romance stories are of low quality here in RR. (Or even a bias against romance stories.) That is, of course, on top of the fact that romance is not on of the popular genres here. That said, since the purpose of a review is to share our experience to perspective readers, I encourage readers to try this out. I personally don't read much romance stories. I am an average RR reader, going for the usual genres here, and I've barely read any romance story in my life, but I must say that I really enjoyed this one. There are no cheesy or cringey moments that some might expect from clumsily handled romance stories. This is a carefully handled romance story between two mature adults. Although, there are a few romance cliches, the ones that you could predict what's going to happen as they've been done before, but then again what sets a good romance apart from the rest is how it handles those cliche moments, and I could say that this story handles it very well. The world is incredible and the author has written it in such a way that it sucks me right in. The magic system has been hinted at here and there, but is fully revealed towards the end of book one, and it's very well presented. Top notch, immersive worldbuilding is all I can say.So, dear prospective reader, if you're tired of the usual stories here in RR and want to try something new, come try this story, you won't regret it. I found myself relaxing while reading this even though it has intense plot.

One of the best web novels I've ever followed. Which, I suppose is a pretty low bar, so my praise is that I like it in spite of being a web novel, haha. But seriously, great great book. Quality writing, have noticed few if any grammar and spelling mistakes; writing quality has added to the experience rather than detracted like so many on RR. Most important though, great story, hard to put down, always excited to see a new chapter. Love both POVs, the characters are complex but real; you learn to appreciate their strengths and flaws as they grow and overcome challenges alone and together. They are such different people, but their experiences intertwine in a way that feels authentic and has you cheering them on. The world the Author has created is unique and captivating, a great blend of fantasy elements and unique cultures that blend together in a world of magic, conflict and hidden beauty. I'm excited to see where the rest of the story leads. It's a slow burn, but keeps you captivated and invested throughout. Found the series on Amazon first - I like finding hidden gems - and made the jump to Royal road once I completed the published books. Author releases on a regular schedule, something that I always appreciate.

Fantasy, bits of romance, action and a whole new world to explore: this is absolutely my jam, and it doesn't disappoint. I'm in love with the writing. PLUS you get fun facts at the end of every chapter! That's just added fun :D
The lore is intricate. It takes a while to get to, but I think it's worth it. This is a very rich world, and I'm loving that the details are revealed gradually, in a way that makes sense.
I adore this story. It's ruined my sleep schedule, though...so just...be aware of that ;)

It's a well written story with likable characters
But be warned: the story is rather dark and doom feels foretold for prolonged amounts of time.
This is a contrast to the beginning of the journey, which is rather hopeful and romantic.
There was too long too little hope for me now and I think this will continue in the next arc, thus I'll be dropping the story after the second book.
