A Pirate's Life for Mei

Description
Blood, sweat, steel, and courage. This is how pirates are made. Mei had always done her best to live a good life. But every year, she and her family got poorer, while the rich just got richer. No matter what they did, a rigged system kept them down. Then Mei dared speak out to inspire change. So they arrested her and shipped her off to a remote Caribbean prison colony. It was so unfair, so wrong, it almost broke her. Until that spark of defiance reignited inside her and she decided she wasn’t going to lie down and take it. Selfish people in power do whatever they want to stay in power. To escape their chains, bring down the tyrants, and build a better world, she’s going to have to kick their teeth in and fight twice as dirty. A supernatural gift allows her to wield guns, blades, and cannons like no one else. But that alone won’t be enough. She’ll need grit, determination, and the courage to risk everything. She’ll need the heart of a pirate. WHAT TO EXPECT- action, adventure, uplifting tale- Alt Earth with slightly different history, rules- historical fiction with light fantasy elements- Heroic MC (think Robin Hood)- found family (crew) "Not all treasure is silver and gold. But we’re going to get our hands on plenty of that too, to be sure." Art by Kittymiya, typography by InoNo AI was used in the writing of this story.

- sylle2005Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really liked this so far. It’s a great take on a pirate story. The characters are well defined and stand apart for the most part. The action sequences are some of the best in the books and are really entertaining to high is good for so much of the book is action. Sometimes the dialogue feels a bit campy and pacing is sometimes weird but I really like this story
- HollidayRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story is about a pirate. Who doesn’t love stories about pirates?
The MC begins as a relatively normal person, not OP although some circumstances do allow her to become a tad more formidable, and has a relatively realistic character progression. She’s not suddenly a genius who’s every plan and action is part of some perfect, elaborate plan. She’s human and flawed, but also likable.
The author takes a while to build things up so the MC can come into her own, which I think is a good thing since some normal shouldn’t suddenly come out as OP in a single chapter and breeze through every trial. It’s quality character development, which I see in precious few novels posted on Royal Road, with what so far has been a fun story though a bit dark in these early parts to explain the turn to piracy.
Also, I have not noticed any annoying grammar issues or repetitive phrases, which I highly appreciate. - domiglenatRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Great story very different than the rest in royal Road. With rebelius them and a strong caractere. Very realistic (no much magic) and historical accurat, but with enough magic to make it intresting. Like a Robin hood story. And apparently it’s going to be an historical devergent with a corrupted British empire. Amazing
- Celladora_StRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is not a story about pirates (at least not YET, as of the end of Book 1), but it’s a story of how pirates are MADE. Don’t go in expecting ruthless pirates and naval battles and treasure hunts. While I’m almost certain all those things will come in due time, this first part of the story shows the humble origins of a ragtag group of misfits, most carrying their own mistakes and regrets, and their efforts to carve up a space for themselves and become a real crew. It just so happens that the only way they can really be free, to never be shackled again, is to become pirates. Though it's set in an alternative Earth, the historical setting is very accurate and there’s loads of interesting facts that are weaved smoothly into the narrative. Plus it doesn’t take itself too seriously, with a little hint of the supernatural and some nice tongue-in-cheek humor that I really appreciated.
In terms of style, there’s a lot to love here. It has this almost old-school adventure story vibe to it, with excellent action scenes that feel thrilling and cinematic. The rich descriptions and the historical background make the story feel alive and I was completely immersed in the 17th century Caribbean setting.
The story starts out with a bang (literally!) but then takes a bit to get going again and there is a long buildup that can feel frustrating in that the MC seems to take one step forward and two steps back. But when she meets up with her future fellow crew and things reach a big turning point, the pace picks up again and the real fun begins! The second half of the story really takes off and then it becomes this nonstop adventure with an eventual payoff that is highly satisfying. At chapter 49, it does feel like the story is only starting and the road ahead for them to become true pirates is still long - but you can’t have them achieving their goals too fast, otherwise the story would be over too soon!
Not much to say about grammar, everything reads very smoothly, there’s some occasi - LaughNTuxedoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love this story and mostly pirates in general but now that we are moving past the early stages and finally getting closer to real pirating I can’t wait to see what happens bigger ships sea battles and the like but a few critiques as all good reviews should have. Small grammar issues mostly typos and Maybe some pacing of sentences but I’m no expert on it and then some of the darker. Tones that are present at least it’s not overly done with it being in the for front of every chapter. But that is about it for any. Issues I may have. Which are not really that big of a deal and now to actually be able to post this review I. Am going to ramble on about the. Pirate queen of china Ching Shih who. Did the near impossible and defeated the British navy and Was one of the greatest pirates of her time and managed to get away with it afterwards she went from brothel
worker to the wife of a pirate captain adopted a son Husband died. Took control of his fleet gathered other pirate fleets raid. The Chinese coast beat navy after navy from different empires and kingdoms only to be offered a full pardon and get away with all her loot. - StrangeGibletsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0If you want the short and sweet version, this is an interesting and compelling read. I'd recommend you give it a go.
(It's worth mentioning, this story includes: Rape, Murder, Torture, Canibalism, and many other horrible things.)
The longer version:
This is a rare gem on this site, an excellent story that doesn't rely on the crutches that are little blue boxes and numbers going up. Even rarer still, a strong female lead that doesn't feel... I don't know how to put this, fake? And that feeling holds true for me for the majority of the characters, they feel like people with their own believable motivations beyond being Archetypes.
The story is about Mei's long and (at times) harrowing escape from her wrongfull Imprisonment.
This, most of the time, does not go smoothly for her. Which makes her victories all the sweeter. Also, if you are expecting an unbeatable power fantasy from the get go you will be disappointed. She does get some help
but this in no way makes her unbeatable. In fact she very often loses hope, like so many would in her situation. But unlike so many others she keeps going, even when she herself believes all hope is lost.
Mei is not a complete unstopable badass, yet. But she'll get there.
Now, I always feel a little guilty giving criticism on storys. especially since I'm reading for free, just please keep in mind I do like the story and would love to read more. I only really leave reviews on storys I think deserve them.
I'm not entirelly sure what time period this is set in, but i found myself quite often pulled out of the story by something Mei or another character would say or think. Purely because it felt anachronistic to the time period. For example how would Mei, a struggling poor person living in the slums of London know about many of the things she does? Did she go to a school? if so, how did she pay for it and would they really have given her as well rounded an education as it appears she has? For example would Mei really know about, and the wo - KaijkoRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5i read the previous version, this one is definitely better.
age of sail pirates with a proper historical background is certainly far under represented and a female democratic revoluzer fighting against colonial powers is quite a compelling story.
the characters are all believable and feel real and the villains are fashionably dastardly.
the story certainly does not shy away from heavy topics like cannibalism, slavery or rape, handling them, imo, quite nicely.
the main character does suffer from, at times, being a bid inconsistent, as she suffers from such strange things as 'feelings' and 'fear', which can be a bid annoying, but i think it does add to her personality and struggle.
as for grammar and co... as english is my second language, i really cant comment on that. - Umbral PlagueRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5I will state that I came into this thinking that the pirate part of this story would be a forefront thing, like it was going to start out at her escaping and then move on to her finding a crew and a ship.
I've just got to say that it honestly pissed me off to find out that this is the story of the making of the pirate, rather than her doing pirate stuff.
I went in blind, didn't read the reviews and wanted to get some good high seas adventuring, and this does appear to be leading up to that.
But the hook that kept me on the line slipped out when I realized she's just moved from one cage to another. I wanted pirates, I got woman becomes a pirate at the end.
It's a frustrating feeling when you go into a story expecting something and not receiving it until the bloody thing ends. It's like someone coming up with a dragon themed adventure but the dragon doesn't even appear until the last chapter. It feels like a bait and switch.
Overall, this is a good and well written adventure, if you're looking for that.
I suppose I'll wait for the next one, for the pirate stuff I was looking for.
