- AI_MarchRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0In this web series the author weaves an intricate and captivating tale that seamlessly blends elements of science fiction and fantasy to create a truly immersive reading experience. Based on what I’ve read thus far, the narrative follows the journey of Hao, Mentos, and a colorful cast of supporting characters as they navigate a world of adventure, danger, and personal growth.
The author's skillful world building transports the reader to a unique setting in Crossblades where technology and magic coexist, populated by intriguing and powerful Beast Companions. The vivid descriptions of the Mile High Depot and the Skyship are some examples to the author's ability to construct a living, breathing world that readers can easily lose themselves in.
At the core of Sword Pop Culture is its unforgettable cast of characters. The Blade Engineer Vicky is my favourite so far, I really hope the author incorporate her in more of the future chapters of the series.
One of the most notable aspects of the book is the author's ability to blend intense action scenes with moments of introspection and camaraderie. The expertly choreographed battle sequences are exhilarating, they evoke a sense of beauty in the midst of chaos. I especially favoured Hao’s particular Vibe Sensing skills and his explorative relationship with the X-Class swprd. There are some work need to be done in showing of more of the rpg element but I think the story has a solid structure for development.
In conclusion, I do recommend this novel for those who just want to chill and enjoy a good story. This novel is sure to leave readers eagerly anticipating the next instalment in the series. - CrazyCoreRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0SPC-UJ leaves you breathless! The cuts just keep coming, and the author does a great job in immersing you in the action. I personally don't have much experience with this kind of story (as in, none. This is my first one!) but whereas many cultivation stories with some similarities seem detached and angry, SPC just thows you right into the middle of the action! Definitely worth giving it a try!
- Den ForesttRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Well how should I describe this amazing story? Detailed, engaging and simply perfection.
The story of how Hao Vee rose to the challenge is delightful to read. I especially like the sword fighting scenes and how it transforms the whole scene into an action packed story.
Hao Vee being blind adds a layer of unpredictability and mystique behind him as well. A great element of storytelling - it is wonderful that you spice up the story so that the character remains relatable as well as real.
The monstrous beasts are as scary as they are gruesome, it is honestly a great description of their beings.
The prose of this story is its true strength as it lends itself to great writing and storytelling. Very engaging throughout and I find myself smiling as the story rolls on. It is a good story after all.
The grammar is almost impeccable. I could not spot any errors if at all. The characters are well developed and has great personality depth to them. Overall the writing is very solid. I hope the readers will hop on and enjoy the ride as Hao Vee and gang advances through their journey.
Hoping to read more from you. Cheers! - Falling LeavesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The title says it all, and the first paragraph sets the tone! The story is set in a world literally created by swords. Your skill with a sword, and the quality of the sword itself, are what defines everyone. True power, prestige, and wealth - everything ultimately stems from the blade. The rich culture in the world of SPCL:UJ is steeped in everything to do with swords, along with special skills and abilities.
Despite the action packed opening, this story starts as a heist - breaking into and stealing from an Imperial Storehouse! Hao, the mc, is chased right from the beginning, trying to escape with an artifact known to have destroyed entire cities... with motives that are initially unknown.
The action hits you right away. I have no idea if it was the author's intention, but the first few fights, when high caliber rounds are smashing through concrete and obliterating a building while Hao tries to evade, brought vivid images to mind. I kept picturing scenes from The Matrix, with thousands of empty shell casings raining from the sky and chunks of concrete exploding all over the place. The distortion affect of shock waves following the bullets are never mentioned - but I'd swear they were there!
The pacing is fantastic, with things slowing a little between battles; for example talking with friends or doing research - before exploding into action again. Hao is chased by Imperial Hounds, droids, aircraft, a shadowy group of master swordsmen... hell, he's even robbed and forced to work to get Judgement Day back. Those are the challenges he faces in one city! Bandits and immense creatures called Tokyos roam as well. Oh, and Hao is blind...
The story is very descriptive, but never in a way that distracts from the action. It flows well in a way that is both natural and always fits the moment.
World building is definitely good. You get a solid grasp early on, but more and more is released over time, creating a world that is both futuristic and steeped in history. There are anc - LyghtbringerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0After reading through the first 10 chapters and then dancing around the later ones a bit, I've got to say, the story is engaging and the characters are interesting! Hao is presented as a disabled individual who found a way to adjust to his disability using the unique possibilities available in the world. He is, in my opinion, a bit of a smartass, and definitely not your typical protagonist. I've yet to learn his motivation, but he has that chaotic good feel to him, where he might do some bad things, but he isn't a bad guy.
Grammar wise, there are very few mistakes, and it's an overall smooth read that gets better quickly. At the start, the prose can feel a bit stilted at times, but the author never loses track of what he is aiming to accomplish.
I would like to have a bit more insight into the characters motivations, and the instant praise characters have for Hao was a bit off-putting at first, but it doesn't seem to actually impact the story. The side characters can have an instant respect for the blind man doing an impossible job that doesn't make them forgive or accept every bad thing he does which is nice to see.
I would like to see the smoothness continue to improve, and I'll be following this story for awhile! - Queen PheromoneRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I have to say that I am thoroughly impressed with the world-building that the author has created. The world that the story takes place in is kind of cyberpunky and at the same time sort of has this fantasy element. It also has swords and characters that are incredibly well-crafted in my opinion.
The MC has a vibey sword that sings tunes that makes him see his surroundings. This I particularly fell in love with and don't get me started on the action in this one. The fights are crazy detail, it is insane. The author puts more emphasis on crafting these actions scenes, using vivid imagery and whooping sound effects like what you would normally see in a comic.
Another aspect of Sword Pop Culture that I find enjoyable is the relationship the MC has with supporting characters. Mentos offer a bit of comical relief in the story as it progresses. He can also hold his own in a battle which I find surprising at first considering that he’s a Scrap Diver, but then again in this world of Crossblades, almost every character is walking around with swords.
The grammar I think is ok, I didn’t notice many errors.
Overall, I highly recommend Sword Pop Culture to anyone who loves adventure and sword fighting. The world-building and character development in this so far are top-notch, and the action-packed scenes are lit. - Rookie12Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This review is based on the first eleven chapters.
Before you, we have an action-packed, fast-paced story set in a unique setting with a wonderful blend of sci-fi, martial arts, and superpowers.
Style. Simply perfect for this kind of story. It threw me off the loop because POVs are changing on the fly, switching from character to character as the story goes. At first, I thought this was an amateurish mistake, but then I kept reading and decided that this was the correct, stylish choice. In my opinion, the whole point of making such a choice is to fit the genre of a manga. Characters will often voice their thoughts, and the MC will often tell the invisible audience what is happening either with words or with his thoughts. The author also adds images to chapters, which helps us visualize some of the characters.
It feels like a JJBA-type story that is brought to paper, and the chapters themselves feel like an episode of a pretty funny and interesting anime. Once I understood this clever trick, the rest of the story followed smoothly. Five stars for a clever use of unorthodox style.
Story. A bit strange at certain parts, so far. We have the MC who steals a valuable artifact to fight an opressive regime (or rise in ranks), but we so far don't see why the opposite side is supposed to be bad, while we see how the MC's action sows chaos and also can clearly see why such an artifact must be locked away. It's all a bit weird.
Worldbuilding, meanwhile, ladies and gentlemen, is the meat of the story! Robots, magic artifacts, superpowers... We get glimpses of how combat robots operate, what sort of defenses there are in the world... And all of it exists evenly, and we get a real reason why no side overpowered the other. It is so well thought out and put on the page that it simply hooks you in. But I do wish for a somewhat better description of the supporting cast. The robots were awesome and impressive, but despite a very well-made image, I had a little hard time envisioning the - SR FauthRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This was a grand tale that would make Cyberpunk proud. The fact that it has elements and thievery straight out of Payday and hints of Blade Runner just makes it better.
With that being said, let us dive right on in.
STYLE SCORE 4.5 / 5: The style of writing of this flows nearly seamlessly. As described above, it takes some clearly identifiable elements from a few different games and movies and ties them together excellently. The action, environment description, and pursuit that are the first few chapters really tie everything together well. My only primary observation for this category is that Chapters 3 and 4 almost seem like they would be better off as a Prologue or some kind of informative interlude. The break in the story doesn't flow as well as the rest of it does. An odd description of, "a rippling dark ripple", in chapter 11 was another particular call out to me.
STORY SCORE 5 / 5: The story is simply fantastic. I have not read, to date, any work on RR or Amazon that is equal to this one in terms of how it blends so many different concepts. I see a lot of my own ambition when it comes to blending genres and ideas here, and it works flawlessly. Cyberpunk, martial arts, high technology, and a myriad of other concepts come together and create a story that is simply staggering in its potential scope and potential.
GRAMMAR SCORE 4.5 / 5: The grammar is, for the most part, excellent. There are several spots, such as the first line in Chapter 1 where "You've Crossed a line this time!" may be better replaced with "You've crossed the line this time!". A second spot is in Chapter 7 where some dialogue is a bit odd in its phrasing, such as the talk about Hao being a thief and traitor. Outside of small things like that the grammar flows seamlessly and well.
Character Score 4.5 / 5: I loved the characters right off the bat. Hao reminds me a lot of a futuristic Aladin, while other characters are reminiscent of big names like Blade. There is immediate conflict and the story - keeganashleyliveRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0…So, there’s a reason this story is titled “Sword Pop”; it’s literally popping with action. Immediately. From the get go. It grabbed me by the shoulders and yanked me in. Additionally, I found the story to be incredibly character-driven---something I personally love. There was a large focus on the individual characters, their personalities and their contribution to the story. Pair that with the captivating pictures in the author’s notes section of most chapters and you get a delightful, 100%-high-stakes, fast-paced story.
And fast-paced is NOT an exaggeration. This plot whips you around---do I currently have whiplash? If I do, I don’t care because this story is worth it. Everything is on the line. All the characters are in. The dialogue is realistic and well-written. Kudos to the author for a job well done! I’m breathless in the best way.
I didn’t notice any glaring grammatical errors to be concerned with. Honestly, it appeared that the author took great time and care with each chapter as several of the author’s notes say that the chapter has been revised and edited. I thought it was well-written, definitely intriguing and right up my alley with the fun and fast-paced vibe. If you’re looking for something similar, I’d highly recommend it. - S.nufflesRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5There's a character named colgate.
Style: is good. I like how fast paced the first chapters are, and how the action comes across clearly, each element adding to your knowledge of the world as a whole. However, some readers may find issue with the dialogue that can sound unnatural overall. This stems from an overall choice of prose that focuses on telling, but people not bothered by this fact will gravitate to this story, yet that is the main reason I'm taking off a star.
Grammar: is strong. Nothing too complicated, but that in turn means there's little to get wrong, meaning it is clear and easy to read.
Story: is interesting. Overall, it does take a few chapters to get past the action, almost like the opposite of a slow burn, but I feel myself to be intruiged by what hints the author is dropping as to where this might be going next. If you're willing to go on the long run, I can recommend this as a great investment of your time.
Character: holds its strength in what they can do and who they are. Between blade engineers and tech'd up security personell, there's an interesting line up of new concepts and ideas I have never really seen. Even if they can be marred slightly by the dialogue mentioned prior, overall these characters are fun to follow and feel as though they're already professionals in their field.
Overall: 9/10 doctors recommend Colgate total plaque release toothpaste
