This series is engaging, with an intriguing mysterious premise that leaves many avenues to explore, fun action, cool characters that seem interesting but also relatable, and of course - progression/litRPG elements. I see this possibly being the next big hit amongst fans of the genre. With a lot of potential, it's definitely worth checking out on entertainment factor alone. Five stars might seem like a high rating, and it may not be perfect, but you'll have a good time, and that's what matters.

This series is absolute fuel for my cranky engine, I'm a sucker for progression and this is done well, there is a crisis situation the MC has to get through (I don't really think LvL 500 is feasible in that short about of time but oh well), incredible character, believable interactions, and great dialogue. And the story kicks ass. And I WANT MORE POWER.
The grammar is flawless and the style is... stylish.
Fuehermore the release rate is out of this world. I'm poggin' out of my damn gourd on a metaphysical level.

Everything Phil puts out is written well and I'm super excited he's trying out web serials.
This has been an awesome start. The characters are great and the system and overarching plot is being slowly fleshed out in a really satisfying way.
I've laughed which is rare, teared up a little, and enjoyed every chapter. Can't complain about the absurd writing pace either.

I like this story a lot. Down and out MC who turns a horror show into a lucky break, redeems himself and maybe eventually saves humanity.
The style flows well and there aren't logical inconsistencies I've noticed. The main characters personalities are shifting quite dramatically (while retaining their messed up charm) but this is covered in the story so not left unexplained.
the setting is quite unusual in terms of system apocalypse litrpgs I've read before. Firstly cities are good places to be! This seems insane to me but the way the story unfolds turns the whole "get out in the sticks and dig in while levelling" notion upside down.
the apocalypse in this story is a slow burn. Well not quite but it's a gradual process and it doesn't just leap into surviving in a completely new world. Where I'm up to we are only in the early stages of the ramping up process but the new system is giving them the powers to survive if they adopt and adapt quickly enough.
The structures and authority of the old world gradually change or collapse rather than an instant change. The interactions between between the new heroes and the establishment are well covered, don't drag out or involve navel gazing philosophies on the purpose of government or whatever.
spelling and grammar mistakes are rare so the prose doesn't become a process of figuring out what you think the author meant.
there's some bad language but nothing horrific. Some sexual allusions (the characters are people after all, and quite messed up people in a few cases) but nothing that crosses the line in terms of explicitness.
overall I'm really glad I stumbled on this story. If in doubt I'd say give it a shot.

This is a well, written, gripping story that's fun and got all the nice LitRPG Apocalypse things you could want.
It's also got interesting, real characters, a lot of depth and worldbuilding, and some incredible similes and writing that I personally love.
The flavouring behind the LitRPG is also quite a unique touch, but where this story shines isn't that. It's the story itself.
It is written incredibly well, with a flair and gripping style that really makes it a joy to read and flow well.
The story itself is interesting and intriguing, the nemesis system is shaping up to be interesting, but most importantly there's an exploration of the effects of a system apocalypse on the world that is done in a really well-thought out manner.
The grammar and everything else is fine, nothing much to comment on.
    I love the characters.
James has such an interesting history that is slowly given out piecemeal both through his actions and his reactions. He is broken and that makes him such an interesting character to be at the centre of all this, and for old instincts to come back to the fore in these situations. He feels so lived in as a character.
Frankly, all the characters that I can remember have pretty interesting and believable characterisations, and it just all feels very real.
Overall, this is an incredible story and I look forward to reading more.

As of right now the characters aren't cardboard and are great to listen interact with the main character.
The main character has his depth that we are slowly figuring out as the story goes along.
The grammar is superb with very little to no actual mistakes that can be seen with a flow between sentences that is a wonder to read.
The apocalypse type event that is occuring is actually very unique in the many novels that I have read on RR and the system is just as unique.  The power scaling is an unknown as we are still early in the book as of this review but hopefully it won't be a horror show that many different system/apocalypse novels turn into.  So far the power scaling is looking like it won't be a horror show that would require the main character having the ability to blow up a mountain with a crack of the knuckles to defeat anything far into the apocalypse so that is good.
The representation of the real world in an apocalypse senario is, in my own opinion, a very well shown thing.  The people and organization of the military is well shown and interesting to behold with mistakes being born early due to misinformation which is always interesting to see.

Its good. I like the plot, and the fact that he acts like it's the apocalypse and not a joy ride where he knows how to do everything. The side characters are great and have their own personalities, although i really dislike the one CIA guy. I'm not really good at reviews but I just wanted to show appreciation since I really enjoy this story.
    anyway, I hope y'all give this a chance! It's a great read!
    edit as of chapter 91:
Holy shit this is so bad ass man, arete makign him sure of that decision was so cool, I love where this story is going

Loving it so far. Non OP mc but still kicking ass. Great story and character development. I especially enjoy how it's all realistic, useless politicians and arrogant military just like real life
If you're a fan of shadow sun by Dave willmarth I think you'll enjoy this. Have a crack at it anyway, you won't regret it.

I love this. Its a gritty realistic story. The reactions of everyone, from the MCs to bystanders to the government looks just right.
The fight scenes are very good so far. Very realistic.  I enjoy the mc. He is acting consistently so far.
I like the little twist of having the apocalypse not start for everyone all at once. Having it be staggered isnt something ive seen before.
I would like to see whats going on in the rest of the world though.  Thats a little thing for me, and isnt enough to take away any ☆.
    Very much recommend

Edit @ch. 91: So, having read more, I'm going to say that everything in my review still stands but it is better than I thought.
I especially like how the author doesn't just throw random obstacles in the characters' way to create tension, nor have them remain oblivious to potential problems to let it become a big problem for no reason other than another arc climax. See bottom for additional mentions of the uncommon skill the author has demonstrated and a more detailed description than the initial review.
    Original review @ chapter 43:
I have no idea how I found this story but I'm glad I did. I'm also happy that, despite the top rated reviews that are negative, it was much much better than expected.
About half of the negative reviews have kernals of truth to them. Some are complete lies. But what matters is, this story is fun.
Note on grammar: Everything is SAE except the author uses pro-drop. If you can't stand that, move on. If you don't know what that is, just read the novel. It'll be great.
If you like action books, stuff ilke Alien vs. Predator or Magnus, this is that but contemporary apocalypse plus system rather than sci-fi. It is kick-ass.
It isn't deep, but has surprising depth for an action-horror novel, nice pacing, and likable characters.
If you think too deeply, yeah, you'll notice some spots that might be simplifications or lacking in details on a specific governmental process. However, it is still far more realistic, and better planned, than your average SyFy movie and just as fun. If you like watching such movies, you know what I'm talking about, and you'll probably like this.
It isn't campy, though, just to warn ya. Less sharknado and more 28-days later.
It is an over-the-top video game in book form. It has the action-horror film vibe where ordinary people become better than they were and kick some ass. It has litRPG elements with powers and mysterious synergies, but they take a backseat to discovering the invasion and kicking ass. Pacing is perfect f
