    Hey, kids!
Do you want to see everyone close to you die a horrible, horrible death? Well, if your answer is yes, then this story is right just for you.
Jokes aside, I think the best way to describe this story would be:
You know where in these "I-was-send-back-in-time-to-save-humanity-novels" in the prologue you usually see the MC and one or two of his companions fight millions of demons in a last stand, while the rest of humanity has perished?
Well, I guess you can say that scenario has the potential to actually happen. And something tells me, there will be no Deus Ex Machina to send the MC back in time.
The trope of a system apocalypse is of course well known, but the author explores a few things that come with such a crisis.
First off, the reactions of us humans. Panic, anger and defiance. The inclusion of the reaction from government(s) is very interesting, since we don't focus on that very often. Mostly because by the time the apocalypse starts to have a go at us humans, governments have already collapsed.
I guess my annoyance is also speaking in this review, because most novels seem anti-government, which I can understand since the role of a government is to keep its people safe. Something that now a single high-level person can do, so why the need for a government?!
    Well, because
humanity needs to stand together if we don't want to die in the first few months. Which seems pretty realistic, given what the Monitor told James.
TLDR: I think that James should use this crisis to strengthen the trust in the government and use it as a beacon of humanity's resistance.
Mentioning humanity I almost feel like I'm in 40K, but I've been bottling this up.

THIS IS OUR PLANET! YOU BETTER FU*K OFF OR YOU WILL BE PURGED IN HOLY FIRE!
    ...(ahem)
As I was saying, and I might sound like a fantasy Nazi here: Novels where after a system apocalypse the MC buddies up to all kind of monsters, furries, scalies... My dude, billions just died and you're making friends with them.

I like this story a lot. Down and out MC who turns a horror show into a lucky break, redeems himself and maybe eventually saves humanity.
The style flows well and there aren't logical inconsistencies I've noticed. The main characters personalities are shifting quite dramatically (while retaining their messed up charm) but this is covered in the story so not left unexplained.
the setting is quite unusual in terms of system apocalypse litrpgs I've read before. Firstly cities are good places to be! This seems insane to me but the way the story unfolds turns the whole "get out in the sticks and dig in while levelling" notion upside down.
the apocalypse in this story is a slow burn. Well not quite but it's a gradual process and it doesn't just leap into surviving in a completely new world. Where I'm up to we are only in the early stages of the ramping up process but the new system is giving them the powers to survive if they adopt and adapt quickly enough.
The structures and authority of the old world gradually change or collapse rather than an instant change. The interactions between between the new heroes and the establishment are well covered, don't drag out or involve navel gazing philosophies on the purpose of government or whatever.
spelling and grammar mistakes are rare so the prose doesn't become a process of figuring out what you think the author meant.
there's some bad language but nothing horrific. Some sexual allusions (the characters are people after all, and quite messed up people in a few cases) but nothing that crosses the line in terms of explicitness.
overall I'm really glad I stumbled on this story. If in doubt I'd say give it a shot.

This series is engaging, with an intriguing mysterious premise that leaves many avenues to explore, fun action, cool characters that seem interesting but also relatable, and of course - progression/litRPG elements. I see this possibly being the next big hit amongst fans of the genre. With a lot of potential, it's definitely worth checking out on entertainment factor alone. Five stars might seem like a high rating, and it may not be perfect, but you'll have a good time, and that's what matters.

A excellent story that does not overstay it's welcome.
It is a system grower which you assume means endless fighting and growing stronger before the next baddie. It is but it also subverts the genre is a really smart way.
Would recommend you give it a go especially as it is now finished.

This series is absolute fuel for my cranky engine, I'm a sucker for progression and this is done well, there is a crisis situation the MC has to get through (I don't really think LvL 500 is feasible in that short about of time but oh well), incredible character, believable interactions, and great dialogue. And the story kicks ass. And I WANT MORE POWER.
The grammar is flawless and the style is... stylish.
Fuehermore the release rate is out of this world. I'm poggin' out of my damn gourd on a metaphysical level.

Everything Phil puts out is written well and I'm super excited he's trying out web serials.
This has been an awesome start. The characters are great and the system and overarching plot is being slowly fleshed out in a really satisfying way.
I've laughed which is rare, teared up a little, and enjoyed every chapter. Can't complain about the absurd writing pace either.

Dawn of the Void is, in my opinion, going to be one of the best stories to grace Royal Road.  Filled with intense action, deep and well-written characters, and the best god damn Executive Assistant the world has ever seen, it has blown me away.  If you really need to read the rest of this review, feel free to continue, but you should stop and go read the story instead.
STYLE SCORE: 5/5 - The style is third-person limited, providing us access to the main character's (James Kelly) internal thoughts and struggles.  The author does an excellent job of maintaining our attachment to James while using dialogue and intense situations to provide for character growth and exploration.
GRAMMAR SCORE: 5/5 - Did not see any errors at all while reading, sentence structure and flow were excellent.
STORY SCORE: 5/5 - An interesting take on the classic LitRPG apocalypse trope, Dawn of the Void uses some unique mechanics and systems that I have not seen in many other stories. I look forward to delving more into this system as our characters grow. While the story is fairly young, already this looks to be an exciting and intriguing romp through the end of the world. Maybe humanity will even have a chance to stop it?
CHARACTER SCORE: 6/5 - James Kelly, the main character, is excellently written.  I love the choices the author has made regarding James' background and current situation, it lends a much more natural feel to the story in my opinion. Serenity, James' unlikely friend and ally, is a wild character who, through the use of system stats and some liberal use of Cocaine, has a strong and profound moment of character growth which was well written and touching. But the actual best character, and the reason why the rating is 6/5, is because of Jessica Miles.
Jessica is a Goddess. She is a Terminator of Orginizational and Bureaucratic destruction. While we have not yet seen the immense power Jessica wields, I am unbelievably excited to witness it in the coming chapters.
    Overall, this st

Early to tell, but so far, it's off to the same strong start as their other fiction, but with a modern angle to it. The system is interesting, and I'm curious to learn more. Lots of subtle mysterious backstory elements being set up. I'm in to see where it goes.

I'm a sucker to dark soul difficulty survival novels. I geniunely love every part of this novel. What sticks out the most for me is how Author introduce a setting and when he wants a certain moment to be highlighted; regardless, if it's facial appearence, emotions, or an action. How Author narrates it from 3-4 different angles really pulls me into the immersion.
I love the intricate detail he possess when simulating this whole apocalypse. Cause I found many would rather avoid involving the government too much by either making it collapse early on, or by not bringing it to the story early, and only glimpse past it once MC is already stronger so it just speedrun skip past it.
Lastly, I love the journey of the main character mental anguish and how some of the characters that were described as 'broken' genuinely possess a mental warfare that is narrated in the novel; not only from a superficial stand point but being explore deeper due to Author ability to describe it.
So yes, this is a novel that I would definitely love to use as a reference when making a character.

Professional level writing, the characterisation is outstanding. Enough information that you know what drives the characters without being hit over the head with it.
The combat scenes are well paced and interesting, you feel the desperation of the situation.
And thank God there are no edgelord characters, everyone feels real and just doing their best.
Well done Author, you've really got something here.
