One that will challenge him and change him in ways he never could have expected. **Violence and darkness are present. - GenofourRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall: Super Supportive is a slow story, in its almost 3000 pages long only a handful of truly major events happen and the Protagonist is still in his "training" phase, not even being close to what is the larger world.
But this slowness is not empty: it's filled with an incredible cast, incredible dialogue, heartwarming (or heartshattering) interactions, and so so much care and attention put into the world. The story is seemingly building up to something, something so big that will be eventually the main point of the story above everything else, but there is the question of if that's even the point of the story.
Grammar: No mistakes I could find.
Style: The style is phenomenal. It will pull you right in with its description, delivered by an extremely likeable POV of the Protagonist, which then jump to related thoughts in an organic way only to return to the original. You will find sentences where the Protagonist is offered alien food, is then worried that the alien food may be poisonous to his human biology, only to still eat it because he decides that not hurting his potential friend feeling is better than being kinda sick. This is the level of writing that most mainstream literature fails at, and it's not everyday that I am so incredibly immersed in a story through its sheer writing quality alone.
It's that good, really!
Story: The story is probably the weakest part of Super Supportive, but that's because it isn't the main focus, at least not in the way that a "central story" should be. The Protagonist has his objectives, which change over time, but they are always put in the background of other things, like the excellent world-building or character interactions. But every now and then, the story hits a high point.
And oooh boy. When the stakes get high you can feel it in your very bones, that previously praised Style catches you in its net and forces you to focus on every word you read. You will claw at the "Next Chapter" button praying that you are lucky enoug - A Tired DragonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I just want to preface this review by saying that I've read and reread this story several times over the past two years. It's become a bit of a comfort read and something I keep coming back to every few months to binge the latest chapters. It's impossible to give a one or two sentence description on what this story is about or why you should read it. To simply call Super Supportive a superhero LitRPG is to do the story a disservice. It's about a teenager growing up and figuring out who he is and where he fits in the universe, it's about learning to deal with trauma, it's about growth and healing, it's about silly little things lost in translation between alien species (orbital stone-child, anyone?).The story is well written. As someone who has done editing work in the past, there's no grammar or spelling mistakes that have stood out to me. The plot flows smoothly, even when transitioning between the slower slice of life aspects through to disasters and beyond. The characters are colourful and interesting. They each feel like individuals. Alden is an amazingly written main character with clear and understandable motivations and desires thatmake sense. The setting isn't just unique but all the little things that make it unique make sense and have a place. There's lots of interesting history, both human and alien. If this story was published, I'd be putting it on my bookshelf right next to my Brandon Sanderson and Garth Nix books.
- Darath69Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is an excellent story. The characters and setting are well described and likeable. This is a slice of life story following Alden as he first learns his power and works at being stronger and fitting into a world of superheroes.
The problems he encounters are difficult and the solutions are well thought out. The aliens did give him a lot of gifts after surviving his ordeal (you’ll find out what when reading the story), I’ll wait and see whether this is detrimental to the story since it can be easy to give the hero to much which makes future issues too easy to resolve.
Spelling and grammar are excellent.
I’m loving every moment! - BanjaxBanditRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.05 star, 100% recommendation. This story can be slow, but every little crumb your given is worth every second. Alden, the proagonist, is such a god damned joy to read, he's one of my single favourite protagonists to date. He feels real. I hurt when he's hurt, I celebrate when he succeeds. This blew me away, and is very easily one the single best pieces of fiction on this site. Give it a read, seriously.
- AshokRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've been lazing off on this review for a long time, but noticed a lot of readers have been unfairly review bombing this story lately, writing or revising 4-5 star reviews down to 0.5 - 2 stars because of a slowdown in pacing. Pacing issues have definitely cropped up lately but the kneejerk review hate is overblown. Super Supportive remains one of the most engaging web serials, with consistently high quality writing output. Oh it has its slow points, but when it hits its highs, those highs are some of heaviest hitting moments you'll find in fantasy fiction.Pros / Super strengths:Characters, dialogue and interactions - this is what drives the highs of the story. The characters just feel alive and real within the fantasy setting because Sleyca has a great feel for putting the right words in a character's mouth for the right moment. A lot of the best scenes are just the character interactions and there are a lot of memorable characters that stick because of what they say and how they say it.Protagonist - Alden makes for a great main character. Just a decent, mostly regular guy who's neither too self righteous nor edgy. It's easy to follow and root for his personal journey because he's likeable and his perspective coming from an Earther makes all the crazy universe seem relatable. (Slight spoilers from this point) His focus on support dovetails well with character-focused storytelling and bucks the usual superheroic trend of being the guy in front.Worldbuilding - It's a sprawling universe, with cool ideas around every corner. It takes a lot of familiar existing fantasy elements (system litrpgs, superheroes, aliens) and synthesizes something new that's relatively easy to follow without getting bogged down in the details.Scene building, plot and pacing - for the most part, the story flows well where each scene and chapter progresses naturally. There's a strong feeling of consequence to decisions. When Alden or others have a pivotal moment, the change actually follows thro
- CgrainRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a great, albeit dark, story! The world building is purposefully grim, where we (and our fellow super) learn more about the dark powers that be and keep everything in place. The MC grows as a person, which is great to see. Style and the different use of speech is distinct for every character, which is very well done. Definitely a recommend!
- BalsazzarRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Very enjoyable! The MC feels remarkably accurate for a teen who has gone through trauma and experienced the mental healthcare we all (really) need. Although the overall story is compelling, spme sections are slow to get through (though it does move along eventually).
The MC's occasional poor decisions interspersed with deeper wisdom make for someone who is relatable but also a bit inspiring. It doesn't feel like a superhero story so much as a LitRPG System story in which limited humans are empowered-and-therefore-seen-as-superheroes.
I marked this a full 5 stars on the Story even though the occasional perspective shifts and plot tangents sometimes feel a bit too much like filler posing as Slice of Life. I like my SoL, but if I can skip most of a chapter and continue reading without losing any important context or continuity, it's beyond just SoL.
With that said, the story arc is deliciously good, the characters have solid development, and the scale of imagination in this world is exceptional. It's ripe with opportunities for further expansions and other series. That I will absolutely read both for the excellent writing and the fantastic imagination.
Highly enjoyable world-building and I'm desperate to read through till the end.(Please continue feeding your desperate fans!) - Andy BRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The world build feels really natural, including the negatives (yeah there are many assholes out there).
While the MC is very easy to identify with, nothing in the story feels predictable (well where I'm currently at).
I have so many questions about what is happening, why, who is involved, how the MC will progress, how different people will react, how he will then react.
I think this is the most complete and nuanced story I've found on RR so far. - DaftGamerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a beautiful story that, while set in a universe where super powers exist, it has such a wonderful depth in the cast. 3 dimensional, emotional depth. Even secondary characters have reasons for their actions (including antagonists).
The world building clearly shows that the author has invested time and effort into their work.
This is such a joy to read. - J.D. Mullenary Sr.Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm a big fan of this story, just like everyone else here.
Simple origin, simple ideas, and expert execution are what do it for me. It's...fun. There's always something new. It doesn't feel overbearing, or stupid. In a world where superheroes are real, this is the story that does it. That hits that feeling wherein you connect to the protagonist and have an understanding of their place in this new and wondrous world.
The choices that the protagonist makes are realistic, quasi-intelligent, and heartfelt. The author doesn't make them constantly go back on their word, or throw in random romance just to "spice" things up. It's built, brick by brick, with full intention and smart thinking.
I appreciate the author and this story because of just how "level" the writing is. There are of course issues, but it feels more like my issues as the reader rather than issues within the story. I've grown, and I feel like many of us RR readers have as well, too attached to the idea of "action immediately, and always". Super Supportive doesn't do that, and I greatly appreciate those moments where the character relaxes and just lives their life. It's nice.
Thank you to the author for writing such a "super" story. I've grown quite attached to it, as I'm sure the next person to pick up your story will as well.
