Description
The gods are real—and they hate you. This wouldn't be true for most people, but for Samuel Lin, whose first interaction with a god was cursing them out, well...you get the idea. In Sam’s defence, he was behind on his Master’s thesis, and he'd just been selected as one of humanity's representatives in an interstellar battle royale: a fight to the death on the grandest cosmic scale. Dropped through a portal onto the slopes of Mt. Olympos, he discovers that the only way to survive is to climb, and the only way to climb is to fight. Overwhelmed by monsters and surrounded by enemies, it’s clear that he’s already been marked for death. Turns out gods are renowned for holding grudges. The countdown has started, and contestants have been assembled from across the galaxy. With immortality on the line, only seven souls can conquer the summit. The winners will ascend to the Halls of Eternity, and for Sam, that poses a very interesting question. Does he have what it takes to kill a god?LISTEN TO THE FIRST SEVEN CHAPTERS FOR FREE ON YOUTUBE SPIRE: The Seven Rings War is a portal LitRPG story. - Arthur HRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I come from Reddit, and usually I never read new stories, only well advanced or finished ones. But I'm truly glad I did it, because it's a very promising one.
So, about the story.
We follow a young guy, who is TP in a battle royale. For now, it's only the start, but we can follow his change of mindset, coming from a student to a warrior. While it's not yet fully developed, we can see the start of an epic journey, with quite a few long term goals.
I really enjoyed the settings and the way to gradually distill the informations, not being that much of Infos dump. The action is really nice and I'm pretty sure some epic fights will happen soon. The MC is well fleshed out and the others characters, while not as developed (obviously) seem to have quite a depth and their own story. For now, he is a bit of a lone wolf, but I'm pretty sure some trustworthy allies eventually come to his side.
I highly recommend giving a try to this story, it's been quite a good read for now. Will definitely keep reading it, so you better not give up the story author!! Keep up the good work and I'm look forward to reading what you will write! - DOOVAHKINRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I don't have much to say but this is just overall a good read. The mc is super likeable. The world the mc gets dumped into is fascinating and interesting. And the side characters are super enjoyable. My only critique is that there isn't enough chapters to read. Otherwise a really good story. Just read it
- Dagamer50Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0You ever get the feeling your witnessing the start of something truly great? That's how I feel about this novel. Seriously it is simply amazing. The characters, the motivations, the story, the system, everything and everyone in this world feels so good in a way that is hard to describe. I feel limited and shackled by the fact I can only give five stars to it. Seriously if you are a fan of litRPGs or progression fantasy in general this is the book for you. Definitely one of my favourites of all time. So for your own sake give it a read. It's worth it, trust me.
- EivoyaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am only a handful of chapters in at the point of reviewing but after seeing the premise early on Discord, it was one I knew I was going to enjoy.
four chapters in and it is very gripping, keeping me interested in the characters and the developing plot. It's spun a classic litrpg system arrival but with a modern twist that doesn't feel forced or out of place.
I am interested into how Samuel will intereract with gods in the future and how he will adjust to his new life, and fighting for it.
the story is well paced throughout the early chapters, giving a good amount of story on Samuel before his world is turned, and alluding to a lot of potential big players who can feature later in the story.
So far, there haven't been any grammar issues, the author has taught me a few new words as I have been reading through which is always a bonus!
The characters are well written and feel fleshed out, not just 2d charactures playing a part.
The storyline is well set up, and I would be interested to see how it progresses through book one and if there will be sequels in the future. - Ryan_HairRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This review is simple. You should read this series. It has the hallmarks and components of a lot of the “great” LitRPG’s. Everything is solid: the plot, protagonist, character writing, emotion, premise, goal, world, and the entertainment factor. It’s all there. I think this series is going up. If you’re considering this series, go ahead and put it on your reading list. You won’t be disappointed.
I believe if you aren’t hooked by chapter 12 then you could put the book down until other reviews come in (and more chapters). But what story is present for the first twelve chapters is enough to hook you. Give it a try.
What do you have to lose? - VadonbagRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I was reading this without an account, so my view progress is not as far as I have currently read.
The story is engaging and realistic very early on and does well to keep the reader interested in the story. I am definitely looking forward to continuing on the story and watching the progression - joryxRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is my first read on Royal Road and it has set a high bar. Great world building and love the characters we’ve met so far. The MC is fun with just the right amount of anger (and humor!) as he adjusts to his new reality. Can’t wait for the next chapter!
- psyne_waveRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Spire: The Seven Rings War is doing something I didn't expect from a progression fantasy on Royal Road - it's actually fresh.
The premise puts you inside a war of gods, told through the eyes of an MC who managed to get on Zeus's bad side before the opening act was over. What follows is the particular kind of scramble that happens when someone is reasonably powerful but perpetually outgunned by divine politics they helped torch. It's less "watch me climb" and more "watch me refuse to die on principle."
The Greek pantheon anchors the story, but Todkill isn't content to stay in one mythology - the Egyptian gods have started showing up, Bast among them, and the mix works. These gods are petty in exactly the way mythology promised - they scheme, hold grudges, play favorites - and the cross-pantheon intrigue adds another layer of "whose agenda am I accidentally standing in front of now" to the whole mess.
The magic and skills system is flexible without being slippery. It doesn't feel like a spreadsheet, which in this genre is already doing better than most.
What keeps me reading is the MC's energy. It's not arrogance, it's not grim determination - it's that specific flavor of won't quit, can't quit, hold my beer and watch me do this. There's something genuinely compelling about watching someone claw forward less out of destiny and more out of sheer refusal to fold.
If you like your progression fantasy with divine interference, mythology actually used well across multiple traditions, and an underdog who earns his small wins - this one's worth the read - tehRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I’ve listened to the first 16 chapters on audio (if you like audiobooks, listen to the first couple chapters at least, since they’re free on YouTube! See link in synopsis) and am currently struggling to hold out until audio catches up with text, instead of just reading ahead.
The story is a tower climber litrpg in a mythological (Greek-ish) setting where only the top seven survive. Think Hades, but a battle royale. The world is well thought out so far and the story has good pacing -- it grabbed me within the first 5-10 chapters. No spelling or grammar issues that I noticed either.
The MC is unique, but (no spoiler) it’s for believable reasons and does not (yet, at least) lead to him being OP, which I appreciate.
It’s still early, but so far this looks to be a banger.
