- ShirimeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It's a shame the story is on hiatus. There's a joy to be had watching someone slowly improve at writing over time, but I totally understand not wanting to continue a story if it isn't "moving" so to speak. This was for a review swap, but I decided to read the whole thing to give you a good picture of what to expect from the story that exists.
Style: It's unique. It has the presentation of a comic book or a Saturday morning cartoon put to page for better or for worse. I like the unique take, but I'd totally understand if someone found it offputting. My only other critique is that there are a lot of paragraph breaks (***) that make reading a bit confusing.
Story: The strong suit of this story is how well it's written. It's a story about destiny and how it applies to those it touches. It's a common enough theme, but the execution is what keeps people around and it is executed well here. The world is well-realized and thoughtful, and the events that happen are eluded to and set up better than you'd expect from a RR novel!
Grammar: Readable. No egregious errors.
Character: Where the story shines. I tend to be biased to this part of a review because I value well-written characters. This story's characters have depth, though, and the dynamics between them make for a fun read. I enjoy that the MC actually interacts with the theme of destiny in a way that the story rewards. I personally want my stories to be about something more than fighting cool enemies and a persistent victory loop. This story has that, and it's much better for it.
Overall, I think you should give this a read -- even if it's on hiatus. Stories like this should continue to be made, and I think you'll enjoy what this story has! - V.K ShahRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Dread the night is an interesting story with masterful storytelling that's easy to follow
I'm going to start with what I enjoyed with the novel. Since this is a new fiction, I'm going to be as honest as possible with my feedback in the hopes of helping the author improving the work during it's early stages.
Story 5/5
Seriously, the story here is the biggest strength of the novel. Each plot point is well written and easy to follow. I know very well what's happening, and who it's happening to and why. I especially liked some of the foreshadowing in the earlier chapters, I'm very curious as a reader to see how this story continues.
Grammar 4/5
I will preface this by saying I am not sure if this is the author's first language due to the various words and names like Xiao used throughout the novel. But I am looking at the reading experience as a native English speaker
Grammatically, the work is perfect and I could not find any issues with the use of punctuation or words. I also could not find any issues with spelling.
However, the way some sentences are structured had some redundancies and clunky wordings, I tried to add some edits here and there to give examples on how to improve readability. These are noticeable, but won't ruin the reading experience or anything.
Style 3.5/5
This was IMO a weaker aspect of the novel. Some scenes, especially fight scenes lacked the descriptiveness that made it easy to picture what was happening. I do like how the author is using a more minimalistic writing style, but also don't be TOO afraid to describe as it can give a lot more impact depending on the way it's written. This is done really well with this in the beginning, so I think it is just a matter of slowing down a bit on certain parts. Fast action is good, Too fast action is hard to follow.
Also I would have liked more info on the world and magic system. Including how each of them work. Certain locations are described really well, but the overall setting could use a bigger introduc - The Jester in RedRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Dread the Night is a story centered around Long Tain, a man who holds science above all else. The setting is sci-fi with a mix mash of fantasy and we have several different fantasy races that populate the world. We learn that humans are near extinct and seen unfavorably by other races. There is one human who stands out above the others, Sir Alex Walton. Our protagonist must navigate the world and try and fill his mentor's shoes.
Overall: I though this was a decent first attempt at writing a coherent story. There is plenty of good characterization with Long Tian, and despite the slow start, it eventually does get moving. I think with a good revision it will shine.
Style: The style felt like it was lacking its necessary flourish. Descriptions were often vague, or repetitive. The overuse of onomatopoeia really hurt the action scenes. A little here and there can be great to add emphasis or draw in suspense, but too much and it makes it all feel choppy.
Grammar - The grammar wasn't terrible. The general formatting of dialogue was the only serious issue. Dialogue was broken into its own paragraph with the dialogue tag placed in a second paragraph below it. This made understanding who was saying what difficult at times, and would have been easier to navigate had most of the dialogue been formatted to have the appropriate tag or action associated with what character was speaking.
Story - The story is a very slow burn with a lot of time spent to world building, establishing characters, and the magic/power system. The story is broken up by flash backs and dreams that occur to the main character. These establish details that are relevant or drum up mystery surrounding our protagonist. Ultimately, I thought some of the chapters jumped around a little too much, and it started get hard to understand what exactly was going on until I reread it a second time.
Character - The main character of Long Tian is well established, as are some of the other minor scientists that populate th
