While the author has this as bit of a historical piece, the basic premise of the story works and it goes to a philosophical question. The setting itself is alluded to more than fleshed out, and given the tight constraints of the word count it is fairly imbalanced in the main idea, yet it does present it well. If anything the background dominates too much, but this is a quick read and while rough around the edges it does work.
