Moonlit Avatars: System vs. System
Community Rating
Description
System vs. System, Player vs. Player. A fantasy world gets caught in a battle between forces far, far beyond them.
They come from a different world. They don't hunger and they don't need sleep. They don't bleed when struck, and they can fall thousands of meters without suffering harm. The worst thing is, they see it all as a game.
They're Players.
Cain Thompson wakes up in a foreign fantasy world, with no memory of what happened or caused him to come here. Soon enough, he finds himself exhibiting abilities far beyond the ordinary, and a little pop-up window of stats follows him around egging him on. That's supposed to be a good thing, right?
But he's not the first to show up and he won't be the last, and when people go around using abilities that make a mockery of the world they live...
Well, it turns out the natives notice, and when they do, so do other Players.

- phoenixofeclipseRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story kicks off just fast enough to keep you hooked, without feeling rushed. The story explains enough to keep the readers only slightly more aware of what's going on than the characters - something I think is esential for proper immersion. Finally, the worldbuilding is slow, but flavorful, with things like the knightly orders or 'the 27' giving a sense of scale and wonder to the world. I love it!
- TechnicallySentientRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I honestly didn't expect to be as blown away by this story as I have been but having just binged every chapter so far back to back I honestly have to say that I hope the author is genuinely proud of how amazing a job they've done here. The system, the people the world building and the nuanced interactions are just amazing, I genuinely groaned out loud when I realised I'd caught up to the current chapter. I'm already genuinely invested in the characters and the bounce around style that has been used for viewpoints and flashbacks might upset some people but for me really fleshes out a much bigger picture of the story overall. if the author decides to do spinoff I want to hear the whole story of what happened to the blacksmith and how he was redeemed, why mera became a Knight, and see more behind the godchildren - I'm intentionally being vague here but if you read through the story you'll probably want to know the same and more. The story isn't just slick, it feels polished which is amazing for what Is a first story on royal road or for any new author. 100/10 and I hope to see much more.
- TheRealAlpha2Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0There is a LOT of isekai. I mean without even trying over the last couple of years, without much efforrt, I've accumulated about 20 manga titles that I'm currently actively following and maybe a dozen anime that I've watched at least a season of (not counting those based on the manga), So, needless to say I wasn't exactly searching for a new one, but I usually give most things I sample at least a couple of chapters to snag me. I curious from the prologue, by chapter three I was fully on board. This story is well executed, it's easy to read and has an intersting enough hook for me that I'd like to see where it's headed, I can see it getting complicated.
- banostoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Hey there fellow Readers,
I'd advise the lot of you to check this one out. Don't be fooled by its anime'esque Picture and weird System Title. This is so much more and I am here for the ride.
Now for the book itself.
Good grammar, well thought out characters and a decent MC. Good recipe. Add a few sprinkles of powerfantasy and unexplored system. A dash of political intrigue.
Voila
This one is gonna be a good series. Keep doing God's work, author. - Endless PavingRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is very clearly in the category of familiar (sometimes overused) story concept done very well. You have a standard magic and mixed races fantasy world with some gamelike elements that doesn't have an explicit game system and isn't litrpg. Then you have the amnesiac isekai protagonist characters appearing from the whatever beyond who knows where that are clearly priviledged and potentially OP relative to the natives and then off we all go on our familiar fantasy adventure.
This story is very much GameLit as I would call it because its narrative in some respects revolve around video game based elements. Things like the Avatar/Player/Protagonist type characters selectively ignoring physics and reality specifically in ways you would expect physics and such to be programmed as when making video game player characters because realism is hard and fun takes priority. Stuff like Inventory, Regeneration, Save and Reload, Fast Travel, etc might be a bit sort of like some of the stuff you see in this story because the exact mechanics might be slight spoilers.
It's not like the standard LitRPG where a "System" is integrated into the reality of the world and ends up like a slightly warped, empowered version of normal reality. The System mechanics are clearly uncanny and "unreal" as if you've been transported into a 2d 1v1 pvp fighter game except in reverse because when you throw a bunch of random sticks on the ground and press a button a perfectly crafted camfire plus tent and campsite might appear. That type of style for game elements warping into physical reality. It's more balanced than above example to an extent of course because this story is done well. Most of the scenes if described wouldn't seem too distant from standard physical reality if you ignore all the local fantasy magic and stuff.
The characters fit well into the Heroic Fantasy slot with concern over ethics, desires to save people, better the world, and not be the bad guys etc. The adventures thus far - HeloImDefinitelyACatRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I have read my fair share of books on royal road, and this story has drawn me in with the same amount of flair and storytelling that some of the greats of royal road display, if not more. The only gripe I would have about the story is that it is very vague about the magic systems and power levels across the world, but that is likely information that will be presented as the MC learns more about the world. While some readers may complain about the multiple perspectives aspect of the story, I would like to say that it is done really well, and helps provide depth to many characters, I also did not find the transitions between characters very jarring, especially during fights, the transitions between the point of views is extremely smooth and intuitive. The combat is superbly written, with descriptive enough scenes that you can picture the character's actions in your mind, but not long enough that it feels like a drag. The characters are wonderfully created, they have vibrant personalities and wonderful stories of their own, and none of them feel remotely close to being cliche. Each chapter is a wild ride of emotions, full of ups and downs that get you hooked on story, but beware, once you catch up to the story, every update will feel like its coming too slow!

That's the best way to describe this. It's like the author has read and seen plenty of isekai's and decided to cut through the chaff and get you to the most important parts of what makes those genres fun to read and follow. We get everything we need here, honestly. A straight dive into the world building that describes certain aspects of the new world in a cool stylish way. We get a hapless MC who is drawn into the mystery of being dropped into a new world, given a status screen, and the powers that come with it. And we have all the characters he meets along the way that makes it fun, dangerous, and filled with fun. It could work on presenting more information about the power systems involved, but I'm sure we'll learn more in time. I have a couple of theories myself, but I'm trusting the author will make the wait worth it. I appreciate the grammar being easy to read and simple. I like how the characters are presented and are quite relatable. They are the type that are easy to root for and follow along. The MC is a bit standard at the beginning, but that's because he's like most MC's, you get dropped into a sudden isekai scenario and it takes you some time to adjust. What I do appreciate is that he's not immediately tossed into a kill or be killed situation from the start -- and he actually gets some decent help that completely threw me for a loop. Usually, most isekai stories are straight to the action and the risk of death and injury. - RaeoluRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story has enthralled me way more than I’d ever expected it to. The characters are genuinely both charming and understandable, and the world and it’s inhabitants feel believable.
If you look just at the main plot beats, the story follows a classic old fantasy novel/video game pattern. However, rather than feeling boring, the story’s framing and style make that fact feel almost ironic. I didn’t even realize that some of the plot beats technically match some common clichés until writing this review. A genre-savvy reader will likely see some plot beats coming, but the writing and characters make sure it never feels stale.
The characters are the highlight of the story. Rather than innondating us with too many names to remember all a time the start, the cast introductions are well-paced and memorable. And that’s saying something, coming from a person who has a mind like a steel sieve. The main cast feels three-dimensional and fully situated in the world. None of them exist in a vacuum, and they all have ties beyond that of the current situation (aside from obviously the isekai’d protagonist, who visibly feels his lack of connection). Even side characters have clear personalities, perspectives, and priorities.
The worldbuilding can be a bit info-dumpy at times, but the story is forgiving if you choose to skim it. Things are more elaborated on as they become relevant.
Grammar is flawless. Writing style is excellent! Well done, sincerely!
Overall, a charming and excellent work. I highly recommend it for an afternoon of reading! - AuroraOfEmberRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5In fantasyland, a person with abilties ripped straight out of a game on top of what normal people get is easily on the stronger side. The main character is immediately faced with kindness when he is just a stranger in an unkown land, and the people are understanding of the fact he is an amnesiac.
He quickly winds up helping and is lauded for is aparently incredible skill (not the LitRPG kind). When disaster strikes and a large number of characters died in just a few scant chapters.
Nothing felt like it came out of the blue with no warning, and I wouldn't be able to point to something that left me confused, narative wise.
This brings me to something I both love and hate here, for two different reasons: Multiple perspectives. The majority of the story is told from the perspective of the main character, and the rest of it from the perspective of other characters. This is great as without this the first bad guy would have been reduced to some guy that just so happens to be bad and powerful (I am doing my best to avoid spoilers here).
The multiple perspectives are used very well to both provide perspective and set things up, leading to the reader being able to guess what events would follow somewhat soon not becuase it is getting predictable, but because the hints are all there.
However, the worst part of this is that occasionally the transition between perspectives is unnanounced and happens fairly quickly. The worst offender for this is the fighting. The perspective bounces around a fair bit, but the way the different characters think is distinct enough for me to quickly deduce whose perspective I am currently reading.
The author said something about being an animator or comic artist or something along those lines at some point in an A/N (Authors' Notes) and I suspect this is a symptom of that, as I imagine getting the perspectives of all the characters (or at least the important ones) is helpful when setting up a scene.
I hope this helps the author understand where th - DeathlyOreoRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Great concept, realistic seeming characters, well described fight scenes, and it moves at a fast pace without getting overwhelming. All the pieces to make a great story are there, but the style bothers me enough that I probs won't be reading much further.
The story is told mostly from a limited third person pov, seeing the thoughts and reactions of a single character at a time. But then sometimes it turns into third person omniscient, where we see the thoughts of different characters in consecutive paragraphs as they interact with each other. The switching is jarring and makes it difficult for me to feel different characters specific voices and get immersed in the story.
Overall, I'd definitely recommend you give this story a shot. You'll find out if the pov switching bothers you relatively quickly, and if it doesn't then this has all the makings of a great story.
