Description
Over one hundred and twenty-five years have passed since the terrifying Volcora invasions began, pushing humanity to the brink of collapse. These monstrous creatures, born of humanity's darkest nightmares, emerge from dimensional pockets, wreaking havoc and destruction. In a desperate bid for survival, humanity has clustered into massive, fortified cities — guarded by empowered Sentinel protectors. While these cities stand strong, outlying towns and smaller cities are left vulnerable, paying the price for not being prioritized by the Sentinels. The Global Defense Force, the governing body responsible for opposing the Volcora threat, knows the grim reality: if the dimensional invasions persist, Earth will fall, city by city. The only hope lies in the Sentinels' strength to repel this surge of attacks, and whether their mysterious benefactors will provide the required support. Serena Solace is a high school student living in the city of Shinara, powerless and uncertain about her future. Hoping for her city's safety is all she can do. But everything changes when she discovers a mysterious familiar in her room, offering her a chance she never expected: the opportunity to become a Sentinel. Now, Serena must decide whether to embrace this destiny and protect her home, or face the perilous unknown. In "Mistwoven Healer," Serena's journey from a powerless teenager to a formidable Sentinel unfolds, bringing hope to humanity's darkest hour. Will she rise to the challenge and save her city, or will the Volcora succeed in their devastating conquest? Mistwoven Healer is a Magical Girl inspired LitRPG story with slow-burn progression. - WhitealertRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The blurb give you a very good summary on the story, so I will not go into it.
The story is very similar to the Magical Girl Gunslinger, but different enough to be its own. We are a little early in the story, but it seems like that it will be a more team focused, where the MC is the healer. The MC is very likeable and a little idealist. The team dynamics also works, the side characters are quite interesting and we barely know anything about them yet.
The writing is super, style is way above average on RR. I did not find any mistake.
I can definitely recommend if you liked Magical Girl Gunslinger, Changeling or similar modern word rift stories. - hansng91Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Written in the first-person point of view, the story reads almost like a personal diary belonging to Serena. The narrative voice is intimate and deeply introspective, allowing readers to closely follow the main character’s thoughts, emotions, and how she perceives the world around her. This perspective creates a strong emotional connection, making it easy to empathize with Serena and become immersed in her journey. The internal monologue is rich and well-developed, offering a layered understanding of her motivations and vulnerabilities.
The system and mechanics introduced in the story are explained clearly and integrated naturally into the narrative. However, it does take a while before the plot moves into the more action-driven segments. While the slower pace at the beginning helps establish the setting and character depth, readers seeking immediate excitement might find themselves waiting longer than expected for the stakes to rise.
The supporting characters introduced so far also have interesting and distinct personalities. I’m particularly curious about Team Picnic—they seem like a dynamic group, and I can’t wait to see how they work together to tackle future missions.
My only minor wish is that the story had been set in a fully original universe rather than an alternate Earth, as the worldbuilding has so much potential. Still, this is a beautifully written piece—easily one of my favorites so far. - AmpWitchRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So if like me, you read the blurb and thought to yourself, “Hey, that sounds a lot like Magical Girl Gunslinger!” Yeah.
So far it reads like if MGG had started with Mai getting her contract normally, and also her family isn’t garbage. MGG is one of my all time favs, so if this is indeed anything like that it's gonna be great. - BootyboiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is very well written no noticable typos, mc and side characters aren't flat and have distinct personalities, with the mc being very relatable.
A unique magic system and great world building so far. The story is being set up nicely and I can't wait to see where this goes! - RainbowPondRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Great story, interesting novel take on magical girls. lookung forward to reading more.
Really well done making it feel dangerous with real stakes. The character feel flesh outed with good depths, looling forward to learning more about them all.
Also looking forward to getting the answers to the mysteries of the world.
only thing I am not sold yet is the pacing, feels like its going a bit fast, that will hopefully get some answers in the upcoming chapters :) - Redturbans02Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Mistwoven Healer captivated me from the very first chapter, reminding me of one of my favorite stories, Beneath the Dragon Eye Moons. The pacing and progression of the narrative feel just perfect, drawing me deeper into its richly woven world with every page. The world-building is intricate yet accessible, setting a vivid stage for the story without overwhelming me. The character development is exceptional, and I found myself genuinely attached to most of the cast, even the side characters, who are given depth and significance that add to the story.
Set against the grim backdrop of humanity’s battle against the terrifying Volcora, the story masterfully balances high-stakes action with moments of introspection and growth. The concept of Sentinels protecting massive, fortified cities while smaller outposts are left completely vulnerable adds a realistic tension to the world. The sentinels themselves admit that they cannot defend everything and are still struggling. The stakes feel tangible, and the looming threat of Earth's collapse keeps the reader on edge.
Serena Solace, the protagonist, is relatable and compelling. Her journey from a powerless high school student in the city of Shinara to a rising Sentinel brimming with potential is as inspiring as it is engaging. Her inner struggles, coupled with the external chaos of the Volcora invasions, create a multi-layered narrative that resonates deeply. The introduction of her mysterious familiar adds an intriguing twist, raising the stakes and offering hope in the bleak landscape.
in terms of the She can't heal herself aspect, it's a bit annoying I am hoping it isn't permanent but maybe that is what will make her really special. I will have to wait and find out i guess she hasn't told any mentor about it. - caurieRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0tl;dr Fun story with a neat take on magical girl tropes! Read if you want a good mix of magical girl angst and happy moments :>
Mistwoven Healer is rightfully one of my favorite stories on this platform, and for good reason. It is one of the few stories I'm actually rereading :P.
First off, uhhh alusion please tell me how you do the lil cloud dividers they're so adorable :>
Next, Serena is a likeable MC in my opinion: she is naive, yes, but she's also a child and it shows; the reader gets to play a part in her journey has she matures throughout the story (along with the trauma). On the other hand, however, and this is the only thing that I'm knocking a half star for: I don't know there was just something tiny missing from the main relationship. Nothing major, mind you, they're great and I love them, but IDK it's a bit of a je ne sais quois problem here to me unfortunately. Celeste is adorable and precious and I love her :>.
Story wise, it's not the most unique thing I've ever read but the world and its organization is well fleshed out and it's nice to see the way magic is integrated into everybody's daily lives. Sinara is an interesting city and I can't wait to see how it changes as the story progresses. Thanks for writing such a fun and polished story, alusion, and I hope that whoever reads this has a wonderful day <3 - Ria CorvidivaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story has been quite thoroughly enjoyable from start to the most recent chapter posted.
In the midst of an ongoing war with an extraplanar race, bonded familiars fuse with humans to become sentinels, a hybrid race of magic-wielding superhumans with supernatural powers that serve as humanity's last standard bearers against the inexorable tide.
The story centers around a group of high schoolers who have been given the opportunity to enlist in that fight. I've come to adore each of them, Serena especially, with her ever-present drive to be a beacon for light in this grimbright, post-apocalyptic Earth. The world is vivid and rich despite the gloom beneath the surface, with a well-rounded cast of characters that one might expect. The folks trying to fight, those who are trying to secure backroom deals to survive or even sell out to the invading forces, and the masses just trying to live their lives and survive. And yet more intrigue has been hinted in more recent chapters, which I will not spoil here.
The story is written in the present-tense, so a warning to those who are repulsed by that. Grammar is generally good, with a small smattering of mistakes that don't significantly impact readability. I have no objections with the pacing, though the amount of 'numbers go up' has been relatively small. Don't expect our cast to gain levels and stats in rapid succession.
In either case, I lament not that that I started this series. Only that I must wait for the author to fix the darn 'next chapter' button. - AfsurpRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It is a little early to leave a review since I’m only a few chapters in, but what I have seen so far has gotten me very interested in reading further. The world the story is set in seems interesting and the characters so far have been well written. It is definitely worth it to give this story a chance.
- solyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Okay, Magical Girl Gunslinger (henceforth MGG) is the elephant in the room, and while it's bad form to reference a different work in a review, I think in this case it's more or less justified. I'll keep the referential parts short.
Mistwoven Healer has cribbed off pretty much all the parts of MGG except (thankfully) the most important bits (characters and plot). If you're coming from MGG, you'll recognise most of the core world elements, from the humanity-hating outer dimension demons to the cute familiars granting great power to teenagers. If you're not coming from MGG, well, those core world elements got the past, like, five copycats to Rising Stars. It works.
Style 4/5:
I'd be remiss to point out that this, unfortunately, also means that Mistwoven Healer has inherited what I personally consider MGG's greatest flaw: Subtle with their worldbuilding, they are not.
Mistwoven Healer's worldbuilding and detailing are generally exceptional. They're even surprisingly plot-relevant: what I'd thought to be offhand throwaway information in early chapters turns out to be relevant to plot or characters as early as within a few chapters, and most of it is relevant by the end of arc 1.
But it's not subtle. Be prepared to be punched in the face with explanatory worldbuilding bricks. It's very good detailing, but I can't help but think it could be more concise or delivered at a better time than frontloaded into the first five chapters.
Grammar 5/5:
I didn't notice any mistakes, so if there are any, they're not awful enough to take you out of the story. There are some stuttery bits that could be stylistically better, I guess.
It is told in present tense, if that's a dealbreaker for you, I guess. I'm pretty sure it's consistent present tense, so I don't care.
Character 5/5:
Serena Solace is... not really mold-breaking in any way, I don't think. Her job is healer and she is... more or less what you would typecast a healer character to be. Honestly, that's fine - breaking the mold ca
