- DimensionalWriter27Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style: I’m not too knowledgeable about what style is good or bad, but for me it felt pretty good. I read quite a bit and this is a style that intrigued me and that I'll make sure to read more of when I get the time. Although I can see at first being strange for the average reader at the beginning, but after the first chapter I think they can get used to reading and enjoying it. I found it to be consistent and easy to read even though it definitely used fragments as an integral part of it. An automatic five stars in my opinion simply for being both unique and consistently good. I also liked how the system was done—smooth and effective.
Characters: Liam is an alright person with relatable desires and reactions. For me, some of the other characters could have used a tiny bit more screen time to develop, but overall they were still distinct with their own voices and mannerisms.
Story: the author doesn’t back away from using familiar scenarios and imagery to really add to the feel of the story. For me, isekai novels usually lose a few points in the first chapter because they gloss over the deeper psychological pressure points that a person would likely feel in the situation they’re in, but this one didn’t. I appreciated the addressing of emotions a lot. There are also clear objectives and stakes that progress even through just the first few chapters, which helped keep the story feeling like it was going somewhere. The world is also set up in a way that promises that the story will be getting more and more interesting as it continues.
Grammar: It's fine. For me, it was a cleanly written story, and the way the grammar was wielded was consistent so wasn’t terribly disruptive to the story for me. Although English is my second language...so take my opinion on the grammar with a grain of salt.
Overall I'd say it's recommended for anyone who's reading this review. - FiddlesoupRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0On one hand a lightning bolt feels a bit cliched; on the other hand being transported into the body of a middle aged lord with a dad bod is so uniquely funny that I can't help but not even be annoyed at the premise.
Characters: Liam is a 20 something pre med student who is living the life everybody dreams of. A hot gf and a potential career that would set him up for life. On the best day he's ever had, a lightning bolt isekais him (and presumably) his GF to a fantasy world. He gains access to lightning magic and a dadbod. He's kind and caring and an interesting figure to learn about. His two main companions are Arlet, his guard captain who is insanely loyal to him, and Nyota one of the titular catgirls. The interplay between the characters is the shining star of the story. This author knows his characterization.
Story: after being isekaid, Liam ends up in the body of a lecherous, murderous lord with slaves who has been condemned by his Baron. When a mysterious force starts sending hellhounds after his citizens, Liam has to figure out his magic powers to save them and to find his way back home.
Style: the prose and dialogue are amazingly crisp and easy to read. It has that addictive quality I love about webnovels, I kept clicking that next button.
Grammar: this story is well-polished, with few if any mistakes. - LifeWisherRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0(Review swap)
Let me say this, I rarely consume media involving cat girls or anything of the sort. I am a cat person, not a catgirl person. It’s just not my thing. With that said, I realize that I have some prejudice on the topic, and judging this book simply by the cover or name is very silly of me. This one proved me quite wrong quite fast.
What stands out the most, as another reviewer mentioned, is the style. It is unique in a way I cannot explain, and you can expect to find good poetry, very well-integrated system messages, and honest-to-God ease of reading that draws you in effortlessly.
It helps that the grammar is very good, with the occasional hiccup that I do not think deserves consideration.
The main character is one we sympathize with from the very first chapter as his internal world is rich and vividly described in an accessible way that only strengthens our attachment to him. As of this review, there are a few other side characters including a cat girl, but the story has been moving in an interesting direction, using some of the standard isekai tropes shaped by the author’s skill, which I daresay is very high.
The dialogue flows nicely and Liam is very likable even after getting isekai'd.
So far, the quality is exceedingly high and despite this being a review swap, I will come back and continue reading once there is a bit more content out.
It goes without saying that you should give this story a try, catgirl appreciator or not. - SerasStreamsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Alrighty it is time for another advanced review! I'm going to be breaking this review to cover each different section.
Overall Score: I found this to be an enjoyable read that started with a slightly sad premise that slowly shifted to the Isekai world. I'm not as familiar or used to the sub-set of the genre where one gets put into the body of another (I don't know the proper term for it), and there was a little bit of confusion when the swap did happen, but very rapidly the confusion is cleared up when you realize...
The author is blending the two minds of the MC to start off. Not fusing them, but almost like one side is struggling to 'shut off' the host body.
Maybe that's how this specific sub-genre of Isekai works, but I digress. Into the categories!
Style: The story is presented consistently with rare shifts in POV. The author's voice comes through in their selection of words (diction), cadence of speech, use of internal vs. external dialogue, and does not ever over-explain. There is a mystery to unravel through the narrative, and the selection of POV and method of unreliable narration ensures that you are guessing at what the truth of the situation really is. This is even more amplified by the fact that we have this weird mind-mashup of memories, and who knows how reliable that process was? It's an intentional style choice and it works very well with the premise.
Grammar: I spotted a handful (and I mean, maybe 2-3 per chapter) errors. It's very polished but would perhaps have benefited from a beta reader or two (if none were used, if they were, author, then maybe add 1-2 if you can for future chapters) to try and catch those errors. They aren't stand-out enough to ruin the reading experience, but, well, I'm the type that harps on Grammar issues as part of my profession. To be clear the Grammar errors are so small that the average reader will not notice them. But to me...they stand out.
Story: The plot is fairly unique. The start is heart-wrenching, and I hoped t - thegoodman99Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Cats… Check.
Political intrigue? Check.
Lightning? Double Check!
Catgirls… Yup
There’s also tragedy, cat puns, dad bods, and a likable MC with OP potential. Book 1 wraps up really nice while leaving a juicy cliff hanger.
The supporting cast is also a lot of fun and I was rooting for their survival throughout the suspenseful story.
What surprised me the most was how much I was invested in the people of Liam’s Barony. Their growth through trials and hardship was a tasty treat. With the growth of the people and Liam’s OPness there was an element of the weak to strong trope while also having just a strong lead… I don’t know if that made any sense… just know it was good. I’d say it was almost like a base builder book but with the military. And yet it was never a real focus or al least it didn’t feel like it. Rather it was a natural consequence of people surviving through hardships. Needless to say I’m excited to see what happens to the people in the next book. It’d be real cool to see them become the military power of the world.
There were also lite RPG elements mixed in and that’s always fun to see. Love when numbers go brrr.
Overall it was a fun read and I am excited for book 2. - Uncharted BloodlinesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The Lightning Lord of Catgirls blends elements of tragedy, fantasy, and self-discovery. The story begins with a tragic twist of fate, as lightning strikes alter the course of Liam's life. The author crafts a captivating narrative that keeps you hooked from the opening lightning strike to the mysterious gorgon plot in chapter eleven.
Story: A unique twist with the reincarnation of Liam into the body of a disgraced noble. The story brings in elements of grief, adventure, and fantasy. The transition from Liam's medical student life to the medieval-like world of the noble offers a fresh perspective.
Grammar: While the writing is generally polished, there are occasional minor typos and grammar issues that, while not pervasive, are noticeable. These instances, however, do not significantly detract from the overall enjoyment of the story. A thorough proofread could enhance the reading experience, ensuring a smoother flow.
Character: The characters, particularly Liam, evolve dynamically throughout the narrative. Liam's journey from grief-stricken medical student to the Lightning Lord with newfound powers is both compelling and emotionally resonant. The supporting cast, including Nyota and Captain Arlet, adds depth and diversity to the character dynamics. The emotional impact of Liam's actions and decisions is relatable, making the reader invest in the characters' fates.
Style: The author's style is engaging, with vivid descriptions and dialog bringing the medieval-like world to life. The pacing is well-managed. The use of the lightning theme as a force of change is awesome.
Overall, The Lightning Lord of Catgirls is a must-read for fantasy enthusiasts. Despite minor grammar issues, the story's exceptional premise, dynamic characters, and imaginative style make it a five-star tale. - WeavervaleRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0his is a strong story that pulls you in quickly. I understand that there are CAT puns, and then there is this one.
SUDO commands are hilarious and need to be ephasized as totally correct.
Grammar:
This story is grammatically sound I haven't found anything that pulled me out.
Character: I am compelled by the MC. Realistic actions follow their choices
Style: This is written in third person with some omni in the system dialogue. Just right for this genre.
There are asides in first person which are in italics. This is good and other writers should take note that this book is ready for the big time.
The characterizations are spot on. I'm going to take a part I like in particular here:
---
“Get your arse moving slave!” Growled Arlet, tone menacing her like a drawn blade.
It spoke volumes, die here or die later, tortured and starved to satisfy Blackwood’s hatred. At least Arlet would be swift, he wouldn’t want to risk being discovered. But Nyota could never ask for death, not that she needed to. Defiance of Arlet’s command activated the enslavement collar around Nyota’s neck, constricting as the maid failed to obey him. Nyota grit her teeth as it cut off her air, mechanically squeezing her throat shut. She slid her fingers under the collar, pulling it away from her neck with all her strength. Fighting for her very life.
“Please! He will kill me. Mercy lord. Please have mercy on me.” She begged. Tears flowing freely down her cheeks, ears pressed flat against her head.
“Enough.” Ordered Liam, praying Arlet would obey. “I will- ahem. Shoulder the blame. Arlet, do not allow harm to befall her. Nyota, I am sorry but you must come with us.” He said, leaning on the captain for support.
Slaves and catgirls. Gross. I want no part of this.
--- - StarryFaeRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is a really fun story and concept. Some of the grammar and language doesn't fit or flow well, which is why it's only a 4.5. I enjoy the way it breaks down story stereotypes, as well as a unique view of another world through the eyes of a doctor.
