Description

An old curse, a green-haired info dumping tsundere, small town legends, and actual lesbians in Michigan (Real!) are things I never thought I'd run into transferring to an all-girls boarding school for my senior year but, here I am.*****Hey, I'm Jocelyn. Just Jocelyn. I'm an 18-year-old with a sarcastic/pessimistic sense of humor (according to my friend Marianne). I'm a lesbian, model-turned-writer who decided to write her first story about herself. Yes I know how vain that sounds and I know how boring biographies can be (thanks Ms Emery) but don't worry enough happened my senior year to call this a story. A story where my goal of finishing high school is sort of thrown to the side as I deal with a "curse" that 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘺 started sometime in the 70's and revolves around being blonde? Dumb curses aren't the only thing I'm burdened with at this school since I also have to make sure my friends don't secretly hate me, attend to that that green haired info dumping tsundere who I may or may not have feelings for and attend to an embarrassing ex who I may or may not still have feelings for. Stories have genres so let's see if I had to give my senior year a genre it would be a...coming of age rom-com maybe? Miss Author just nodded her head so I guess we'll go with that.So yeah that's the blurb. Hope you enjoy my story! (Miss Author told me to write that last line ughhh)☆ story status - completed !☆ completion and final revision date - 9/9/2023☆ Im Popular (or at least i used to be) Vol. 1 - ipvol1☆ 1-2 illustrations in every chapter :)

Having finished the book in pretty much one day I have to say that it was a good read, even if rather short.
So starting with the main dish, the romance. It was okay. While I'm not the biggest fan of 'will they, won't they' it did reach a rather fulfilling conclusion and I hope that in upcoming volumes we will get to see Jocelyn and Emma's relationship be more fleshed out.
Sadly the comedy part of the RomCom didn't really work out for me. Maybe because I'm from Poland and I just don't get the American humor so I won't critique this part of comedy aspect. What I can critique however is the meta commentary that Jocelyn provides. They do break the flow of the story and make it seem less genuine. Which is a shame as the setting where everyone is paranoid about any blonde girl could be a good setup for jokes.
Now for the more technical stuff, the writing style is good. Descriptions don't drag on, the sentences fluently go from one to another, there weren't any grammatical mistakes (or I haven't seen any) as well as the sentences are coherent and straight to the point.
On the topic of descriptions, they do their work well. We get how the scenery looks with just enough details so any blanks left to fill aren't plenty and the characters are vibrant and full of life. Now granted that some knowledge of brands is necessary but even for someone like me, I didn't have troubles with visualizing their designs.
As for the characters, they are fine. They are distinct from one another and stand out from the background. Although I feel like the girls, save for Jocelyn and Emma, haven't been really all that fleshed out, but I guess that's for future volumes to fix.
Now my one and only personal complain, the curse. Coming here I expected a paranormal mystery subplot, but it was barely there. The curse was introduced with an interesting premise rather early on but it didn't really do much for the plot. The only relevant thing was other students being wary of Jocelyn. Now I guess it isn't
