- Hero FodderRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0In the expansive world of Isekai fiction, where fantastical adventures and supernatural powers are commonplace, "Horizon of War" emerges as a rare gem that defies the standard tropes of the genre. This compelling narrative takes an introspective approach, grounding the story in a meticulously crafted medieval fantasy realm and offering readers a refreshing deviation from the traditional OP fantasies. Within this richly developed world, the protagonist, Lansius, a regular office worker with no magical abilities, embarks on an extraordinary journey where survival, self-discovery, and personal growth take center stage.
The defining feature of "Horizon of War" lies in its remarkable world-building. Hanne, the author, demonstrates an exceptional commitment to constructing an expansive and immersive world that transcends mere backdrop status. This world is not a static canvas but a living, breathing entity, evolving and deepening as the narrative progresses. Hanne's meticulous attention to detail breathes life into the setting, enhancing the story's richness.
As readers delve into the story, each chapter reveals new layers of this intricately designed universe, gradually building a comprehensive and believable medieval fantasy world. The world of "Horizon of War" comes to life in a way that's genuinely captivating. There's an aura of authenticity that sets it apart from the generic, trope-heavy settings often seen in the Isekai genre.
The storytelling in "Horizon of War" is masterful, setting a high standard for web novels. The pacing is precise, with each chapter acting as a measured step forward in the narrative. Hanne carefully constructs each chapter to build anticipation, suspense, and a genuine desire for more. This meticulous storytelling keeps readers engaged, making it an enjoyable and immersive experience.
The plot itself is a testament to Hanne's craft. It's not merely a sequence of events but a tapestry of intrigue, conflict, and personal growth. The grammar and wording is excellent, the story flows well, the characters are well written and while I am biased and love OP MC's - even if it's not in the typical ways the MC has many qualities that help set him apart and make it easy to root for him and his side. I would say if you like the genre and aren't someone whose addicted to the typical web novel junk food for your mind, this would be something you enjoy. Big hats off to the author for also sticking with it for so long despite all the toxicity online.
- Astral CrystalRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style: The style is good it's easy to understand what's happening and the pacing and progression of the story is also very good. I also enjoy the other povs a lot, and they are done well without being annoying.
Story: The story is very good, it's very realistic and the mc doesn't have any cheats or superpowers yet he is still able to succeed thanks to his wise application of knowledge. The battles and kingdom building are my favorite part of the story and they are very fun. Personally I prefer the story much more once the mc starts to build his kingdom and has a better position. The magic aspects of the story are very interesting and I want them to explored more throughout the story. While the story has a grimdark tag and bad stuff happens, the mc suffers losses and his victories aren't easy. I like how it's not super depressing like what the grimdark tag implies.
Grammar: The grammar is good I only remember seeing a few errors at the start of the story and they got corrected afterwards once the author was called out.
Characters: The characters are great and I like them a lot. They are all very realistic and none are perfect, they make mistakes and learn stuff throughout the story. They are likeable and I want the mc and his allies to succeed, the interactions they have with each other are also very wholesome and fun. Although some of the side characters could use a bit more characterization. - Cooljo2Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Love the story and only wish the author could write faster
( I don't have a lot of patience sadly even though the author does post faster than most authors on this site)
swords and bows adventure and surprises.... perhaps love?
lots to read and enjoy about this story
its a world building slow rise to power story that is reasonably paced and does a good job at character development, there aren't too many characters that it becomes difficult to keep them all straight. The battles are where the author shines!! Using period accurate equipment, factual understanding of weapons and armor and actual historical battles to pull information from the author knows how to write a good battle and every one of them is better than the last!!
(well done author) keep it up.
In the Lull's between battles you get plot development and building of foces as well as some political intrigue if that your thing. There's not too much action for a few chapters in a row and then it'll explode back into action once again. So far there have been fair maidens, slavery, sword fights, full battles, crossbows, seiges, fire, food, chases oh horseback, and some deaths....
(please hurry up I need to know what happens) - BoredBtwRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0After the first chapters I was completely enamoured, so much so that i spent a whole day reading book 1, 2 and 3 while bedridden from flu. It’s time i wouldn’t trade for the world. As i lied down sweaty and constantly fatigued, Lansius’ story had everything I could ask for. A main character with mystery, strength beyond strength, and a mind so complex and compassionate I almost wish he was real.
Supporting the main character is a plethora of characters each written with unique personalities and memorable quirks and tendencies. Such so was the enigmatic Stefi, aloof Felis and a plethora of stalwart and honourable knights sure to make the Round Table proud. But behind these supporting characters are interesting antagonists who show multiple dimensions and akin to the medieval times are a product of their surroundings and forced hand rather than like many fantasy stories where antagonists are evil simply to be evil. Perhaps my only gripe would be due to the size of the supporting cast I feel some characters do not get as much time to be explored or their perspectives seen in many key events during the series. However, the story is very good at keeping pace and this had maybe done to keep it so.
Not to mention the world surrounding this novel is so full of life and masterfully written to feel so real. As a DM i thoroughly enjoyed seeing the tools used in world building used in the creation of this beautiful novel and It’s thoroughly inspired me to get back into writing.
I have so many praises for the author, they have done an astounding job bringing this world to life. When the rest of the books come to Amazon i’m sure to buy them in paperback :) - 47th_DemiGodRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I personally prefer, realistic story.
I don't want the protagonist to just know 2 or 3 methods to solve a difficult problem and then magically starts to solve any future problems because he could in the past.
The most interesting part I loved was when he constantly won impossible to win the wars, and still won it with his wits only to then suffer the cost of winning too much. Not many author's decide to punish if a protagonist is too successful.
Another thing is that it reminds me of how Kinoko Nasu wrote his VN fate/stay night. Shirou suffered every time he tried to be a hero, there was a cost for trying to be a hero.
Similarly Lanius also bears consequences of both his defeats and wins.
Last things to add, - BullerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story ain't too bad. Gives a good focus on the character, explains how he came to his current goals, and actually shows him reacting in a way that doesn't make me want to slap him. I am sad to say this is not a regular occurrence. Good on the author for that. Other than a slightly issue with paragraphs not having a more varied size through the chapters, I can't see much wrong with this story. 5/5
- FurioRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I liked this story, the author try to create a "realistic" low technology fantasy world using his knowledge of ancient and medieval history and, in my opinion, does a good work.
The "realistic" approach it also extends to the characters, described without much deepness, who have values and personalities consistent with the world in which they live.
The weak point is the MC that initially is incredibly passive: arriving from a modern world he live the life of a very poor medieval farmer without any real attempt to improve its condition, and only by a stroke of luck becomes a scribe in a noble
Then, after some adventure, using the memories of his military history readings, he develop an incredible military genius and develop in few months the personality of a strong leader, It's not very believable, - Gain1Draw1Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This a great story, well written and edited, fantastic characters with depth and growth. The techniques employed in battle have obviously been well thought out and researched to be realistic and hisrtorically accurate enough, obviously there is some liberties taken due to its nature as a fantasy story, but they never break immersion. 10/10 would reccomend.
- James GarfieldRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Update March 28, 2024: The grammar is greatly improved from the early drafts so I'm bumping up the Grammar Score as well. No change to the overall score: 5/5
The original review from when I first read the story is below, but it's outdated now
-----------
I didn't read Horizon of War; I experienced it. Although still in the early stages, it's an engaging read with fleshed out characters and a compelling plot true to the age it takes place in. The author focuses on aspects of life in a medieval world that I would normally gloss over as an author and also intrigues the reader. It's refreshing to see a main character in this genre that isn't overpowered or arrogant but isn't pathetic either. He's not a hero (at least, not yet), but he's likable and relatable. The only area for improvement in my view is discussed below under grammar. With a round of additional editing (at least for the early chapters) that could easily get bumped up to full marks.
Style: Immersive. The author's use of descriptions, transitions, and storytelling pacing make this an enjoyable read that keeps you seeking more. I didn't identify any mismatches between what I thought the author should be telling us and what was written, as happens in some fictions.
Story: So far, the plot is engaging and exciting. I'm eager to learn more, and can't help wondering what type of situation or arrangement our protagonist will find himself in due to his unique background. Events in this historical world really highlight what life was like and what the powers-that-be had to be worried about during this time period.
Grammar: The grammar and editing is inconsistent; at times it's smooth. At others, I notice the occasional error or awkward word. The errors did not get in the way of following or enjoying the story. Editing other types of writing is part of my day job so perhaps I'm a bit stricter than most in this area, but it's much easier to fix than weaknesses in the other three categories, so this
