Description
Death makes exceptions for all the wrong people. Malfrasius wasn't trying to destroy the world. Even as everyone called him a Dark Lord, he fought to save them. Unfortunately, the Heroine didn't believe him, and his life ended with a blade between his ribs. So when he woke up six years in the past on his way to magic school, he decided that he was going to do things the right way, and without attracting attention. But the butterfly effect has a funny sense of humor. Thanks to his clumsy changes to the timeline, he's in a team with two members of the Heroine's party. The academy's top prodigy knows that he's her equal, despite his F-grade core. And his loyal maid is getting suspicious of his sudden personality shift. Malfrasius wasn't trying to destroy the world. It’s just a shame the world seems so intent on destroying him. What to expect: - Slow burn, character-focused storytelling - Grounded, steady power development - Dysfunctional character dynamics - Hidden identity shenanigans It's basically a westernized version of korean-style regression novels. If you enjoyed stories like Regressor Sect Master, The Regressor and the Blind Saint or Trash of the Count's Family, you'll probably like this. I quite like the style of writing so far. (There isn't too much to say about it, it just flows pretty easily and is readable. Thumbs up I guess?)
STORY: 5
You don't see too many Korean style regression novels on this site, so this was an interesting and refreshing read. Many looming swords of Damocles floating over the MC's head so far. It does take a slightly comedic tone, which I find enjoyable. School life has just begun at this point, but I liked the examination arc.
GRAMMAR: 5
Good. Various misspells, but nothing horrendously terrible. It's not magical, but it's immersive and doesn't seem like the author was trying to hit a word limit by using complicated and unnecessary writing.
CHARACTER: 5
The part I really like! The characters are fleshed out (IMO) and I've been enjoying his interactions with the heroes. The headmaster is also hilarious to read. All of them seem reasonably fleshed out, and I quite like how a lot of them have speech quirks :D
OVERALL: 5
Overall, I would enjoy binging this, so it's already passed in my book. I will note there are only seventeen chapters published right now, but of the seventeen we have, it's all good. - Vinyl FantasyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0While not the most unique premise, the combination of well used and even subverted tropes, and fun, colorful characters made this very enjoyable to read.
There's also a clear plan for where things are going, making the world building feel purposeful and methodical. Not every question is immediately answered, but we see hints of the greater picture.
There's been the occasional typo I've noticed every few chapters but it was obvious what the author had intended. No grammar issues.
My only nitpick is that some of the individual plot details feel a tad contrived and born from a few too many coincidences. Though, I suspect that may even be intentional as the main character themselves has noticed. - TurtlebroRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a 10/10 recommendation for people to read who love Regressor stories.
When I first picked up this story I didn't know what I was going to be getting into but man has it been a fun journey to say the least. It had a fun unique spin on the regressor life style but also on who it happens to.
Mal makes for a fun provocative but strangely enough a glue for certain characters that are in his orbit.
Im not one to spoil much but the different takes and the theories that Mal are basing his actions on have me laughing cause he just gets airhead and frustrated when things aren't lining up like they should with the first timeline he experienced.
Definitely a story I will and have told others to read because it is a fun well paced story of a regressors life.
The characters growth in just a couple chapters of Mal's current circle are very well fleshed out and it is funny to watch the byplay of the other races being against each other even though in the circumstances that they are currently in should have them watching each other's backs. I can see how this will be a fun set of interactions between them all - Nicolai P. CustodioRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The story is novel enough in the genre to be worth reading and following. World building is great and solid. The main character is relatable. He is not an edgelord; nor is he swimming in guilt and self-hatred. There is no power creep or harem. This is a recommended follow.
- James650Royal Road★★★ 3.0The story itself is ok as long as you don’t think too hard about it. There Is a ton of plot holes and timeline issues. Our mc didn’t regress too far back but somehow basically is clueless about teachers, the school, all stuff he should have lived through.
It’s definitely a shut your brain off and read story or you’ll end up questioning too many things. - InslayerRoyal Road★★★ 3.0I mean, the premise is good, but the pacing is not for me. I would have enjoyed the story more if I saw the Mc rapidly improve, or at least use his knowledge to have some sort of an advantage.
But so far, he keeps complain about the heroine when she's not even his enemy at this point in time, when he himself regrets his course of actions. And instead of trying to bring her in his team, he wants to kill her.
It doesn't make sense. Especially given how he wants to prevent a great disaster without being one himself.
We are on chapter 16 though, and not only has he not grown stronger, he hasn't even attempted to grow stronger. The Academy from what I'm understanding is mostly a fountain of knowledge, with opportunities mixed in. He has the knowledge (limited as it is), why isn't he planning around opportunities?
Actually, why isn't he trying to remember opportunities he could use to get stronger? Or why isn't he searching for a way to fix his memories? Is that possible? Why don't we know and why isn't he searching for it???
Also, no benefits from forbidden knowledge he has that don't require absolutely gruesome stuff to grow stronger? Not even plans to make his own rituals without sideffects, or with sideffects he can mitigate?
Or hell, while we're at that, why not make something with no sideffects. Is this possible? No? Please tell me if so, and why. Because don't know and we can't hypothesise on it because we've been given nothing but the bare bones of what it means to be a Fallen Mage.
I understand him being already neck deep in it in his previous life to bother searching/researching for something like that, but now he's practically free.
What bothers me is not knowing IF it's possible to do that, and why is it not, and why doesnt he try, and what rules does this sort of thing have and why for a great mage like him, the only research he did was on spells, and actually could he design a spell to do mix Fallen Magic and normal magic? Is that what his orbs were? If so, - Daniel HoffmannRoyal Road★ 0.5Apologies but this is a difficult read.
Stilted dialogue that tends to be one sentence trading back and forth between characters, question answer calls, triplicate descriptors, this reads like untagged AI.
The characters feel flat and the world has no depth at all. The motivations of the characters feel misaligned, as if someone were creating a simulacrum of existence without understanding humans
