Description
Are monsters born or made? Some think monsters are the gods' punishment upon the world for their wrongdoing. Others think it was circumstance that created the monster. The cynical believe some are just born broken beings who could maim and murder without conscience. They were all wrong. I wasn't an accident, a victim of circumstance, or a punishment from the gods. Fools rationalized and tried to find deep meaning where there was none. The truth was, I made a choice.

- CampaspeLlamicornRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm really enjoying this story. A villain lead is so fun and different, and well, Myr is very relatable, despite her tendency to murder-as-solution. She has goals in life and pursues them without regard to other people's morality. She's moderately self aware (I am so suspicious of her "no regrets" stance). And she's queer, which is always always a plus for me in a MC.
It's a interesting look at world that is so clearly stratified by birth and wealth, and what your options might be and how that might shape you as a person. - PinchOfSaltRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0In short a brilliant anti-hero novel written from a truly non standard perspective, one of the few novels I will say genuinely makes me understand and root for a villain despite their numerous heinous acts, though it never feels forced.
Style:
Fantastic introspective writing style with minimal POV switches, mainly written from the perspective of the main character we see her own thoughts and actions but never too many that it becomes overbearing instead her perception and the worldbuilding flow together, altogether a brilliant piece of prose and we learn and feel things through her and feel how her perception changes.
Character and Grammar:
Generally well written with no grammatical errors and we see how she develops from simple aspirations and loyalties into a much more driven character with only one true goal, a proper introspection on what can change a person and how a society reacts to that once they develop a true level of sociopathy. Though she is not without heart and there are some touching romantic scenes.
Story:
This story is brilliantly written and the world is vibrant and alive, its a truly unvarnished take on agency and how people without agency and with it act, it feels achingly realistic and the simple acts of kindness between the harshness stand out all the better because of it. This is truly a story that shows well extremes and uses it to shape our understanding of the main character and her actions. - FireGumzRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The book has been phenomenal so far. The MC is written very well and is actually a proper villainous lead which was very enjoyable to read. The pacing was absolutely excellent and the world building so far has been very natural. So if you enjoy dark fantasy give it a read.
Really should be more popular! - InmiumRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love a good villain story but it's difficult to get it right. There's a fine line between going murderhobo and finding redemption. Never mind following this consistently but this story manages this very well. The setting is good, the side characters are interesting and the pacing is really solid.
I couldn't put the story away and read it all in a day. This one will definitely go to the top of my follow/favorite list! - MegaZeroXRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm going to present 2 sections of the review, contained in spoiler brackets.
The first is the bare minimum, not even including what is included in the story tags and synopsis.
The second will assume you read the first section and add additional information. I will feel free to use information from the synopsis and tags, along with more vague allusions to how the story employs those elements, along with including an excerpt from an earlier chapter and talk about which sections of the story I feel like are weaker (without describing what is happening in those sections).
Completely spoiler-free version:
This story is one of the best written stories I have seen on Royal Road. Its not perfect, but it is definitely a gem.
First of all, as far as general writing mechanics go, this story is pretty strong. The prose is good, and the general story beats are consistently engaging. There are occasional grammatical issues, primarily with punctuation and capitalization (I usually notice 1-2 issues per chapter), but that makes it far better than most stories on this site.
The author particularly excels in getting the reader into the mind of the protagonist, and really coloring the world through her lens. The writing also excels at showing her character growth and having gripping personal moments as she develops her views that oozes with personality.
The biggest issue currently is consistency, as some story arcs have stronger writing than others. The strongest arcs in this story can stand toe to toe with the giants in the web fiction space like Worm or Practical Guide to Evil. However, the weakest arcs are more in line with what one would expect on this website, though still being enjoyable if this kind of story is your thing.
That is about all I can say in this completely spoiler free section.
Minor spoiler additions:
One of the really impressive things with this story is that it involves a real villainous protagonist that undergoes real character development. It feels pretty com - KC123Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Enjoying the story. Great character developement. The magic system is novel and unique. It can be confusing as times.MC does whatever it takes to achieve her goals. Actually a villian unlike most others with this tag.MC who isnt OP from the start. There isnt a 'system' that conviently makes the MC OP. Everything is earned. No shortcuts to power.Releases are somewhat slow.Keep up the good work, enjoying the story so far and looking forward to what happens next.
- Kevin KrausRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0MC is pure evil. Even if she has multiple chances to become good and lead a "normal" live, she chooses to be evil. No excuses, no evil but secretly being one of the good guys. Love it!
Well written, I think I've seen two minor typos so far. Grammar looks good.
Can recommend! - LedaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Finally, a dark fantasy with an evil protagonist that does actual evil in the name of freedom and power, damn the consequences. Although, can it be called evil if absolutely everyone else is also a total bastard?
The prose is good, story is intriguing, magic system is pretty fleshed out with no litrpg nonsense, a very enjoyable read overall. - LisferRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Most powerful is he that has himself in his own power. Seneca. The protagonist is a young girl from some forsaken village who was abused and mistreated her whole life because (it is implied) she was conceived by force. When she is about to be sold to a man old enough to be her father, she flees. She sees the worst humanity has to offer, but also some of the good. The author lets her taste goodness and peace, and she later has the choice to simply fade away into a good life with probably no hardship anymore. But her burning determination to never be caged, never be controlled, leads her to darker and darker decisions. She kills, she murders, she steals, and plots. She lets others do as they will and does not stop them from committing heinous acts in her presence. She is cruel to herself; she is brutal to others. The writing is good, and there are many admirable qualities to the MC. But sometimes I stopped and asked myself: Why am I still reading this? It gets quite dark sometimes. The magic system is well thought out and has mechanical depth. And there is always a revelation, some deeper meaning, more power, to be had. You understand why she does her research, and you see the results. That part is really outstanding. She is a genius mc who earns her power in a believable way.It is a good, no, a great story. But it will not be for everyone. And that is fine. Appealing to everyone is not something every story should aspire to (In my opinion). I, for my part, will continue reading, and I hope that she finds it in herself to be more kind to the innocent.
- RielleRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Well, this is definitely the best Evil Female Protagonist work I've read (neutral/practical evil by dnd terms, not some insane murderhobo or zero feelings robot).
Actually, if you think about it, this is one of the best Female Protagonists in general, because, trust be told, most of the authors, especially, and ironically, in the Girls Love genre, absolutely do not know how to write a woman (lesbian or not).
Even apart from that, it's a rare fantasy without LitRPG, prophecies, reincarnation and rainbow ponies. With relatively unique magic system. And good editor. You can give 5 stars for this already.
Hm, and worth mentionong, but the main strenght of the work is not all this magic stuff, but protagonist, how she shaped by her jorney, how she view the world, character interactions, etc. Magic paled in comrasion and sometimes kinda dragged on.
