The author is great making me emotionally confused in a good way, without spoiling much, when I first started reading, I expected for all of the characters surrounding the protagonist to be horrible, irredeemable scum with little to no redeeming qualities, but I was wrong.
Every character, even the protagonist have made decisions that I could see myself making, I have yet to see a character that has any major role with any even slightly considerable screen time that is entirely one dimensional. All of the characters who are in the protagonists sphere of influence either improve or degrade their state because of him, if each of the side characters were the protagonist of their own novel the arrival of the protagonist would be the inciting incident.
Now, to get into what I hope are some minor spoilers

The protagonists objectives and cynicism is completely believable, it might be because I spent thousands of hours reading on web novel before finding royal road, but characters that don't believe literally everyone is either completely apathetic and/or unwilling to help.
While all of the protagonists current problems come from one decision he made in the beginning of the story, I must say that I would likely have a similar reaction, and I believe most members of my family would as well.
Overall, I personally aspire to achieve a level of writing as good as this, and you should definitely read it
