In the year 2065, Bai Meirong and her bodyguard Duan Hu arrive at the Kang Tao Building in Night City from Shanghai, China.They are placed under her maternal grandfather's care in the hopes that the two's direct presence in the city will allow the company to bring an end to an unofficial Arasaka collaboration on a project thirteen years in the making, as well as bolster their position in an uncertain political landscape.
