- DarkWasTakenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Pretending the pun in the title doesn’t exist (though I personally like it), I had the pleasure of reading this story, and I have to say: it was incredibly enjoyable.
The first chapter does a great job of showing our protagonist, Gilbert, dealing with his everyday life in the office. The beginning might seem a bit cliché, but it’s well executed and reminded me of other stories in the same genre. It immediately introduces other characters too, and I hope to see them again soon (except for the boss—if he shows up again, I want him dead).
Right now, the story only has a few chapters, so this review might change in the near future, but for now, it stays as is.
Style: I really like the writing style, descriptive just enough. Sometimes the author lingers a bit on certain details, making some sensations feel a little repetitive, but honestly, I enjoy it. The chapter structure flows well, and each ending leaves me wondering when the next one will drop.
Grammar: Excellent. I noticed only a couple of minor typos here and there, but nothing that caused any issues.
Story: Too early to judge overall, but the beginning is strong, so I’m rating it based on that.
Characters: The protagonist’s personality is shown right from the start, along with glimpses of other characters, though it’s still too early to fully evaluate them due to the low chapter count. Gilbert is well characterized so far, though I hope he doesn’t become some kind of murderous hobo down the line (fingers crossed). We already see various characters with distinct personalities, but in my opinion, the author should focus a bit more on the protagonist, as I noticed several POV shifts between chapters (they always start with Gilbert, but sometimes shift mid-chapter). That said, I do appreciate his current sense of determination.
I also wrote some thoughts on the first chapter if anyone’s okay with a bit of a spoiler:
Chapter 1
Classic asshole boss who does nothing but belittle everyone. A bit of a cliché, but I’ll adm - LubjubRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm a sucker for people starting off with the office desk lifestyle, only for to things inevitably go to the gutter. And next thing you know, the last thing your mum ever gives you kick starts a cascade of events that transforms the main character into Chadbert the great.
The world building (more like cosmos building) is a nice touch. It's neither too little nor too much. Little things like introductions to other characters that may or may not be important down the line.
Great job on your story. - zooney2000Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'd like to start off by saying that I love the overall theme of both the story and power system. It's obviously not easy to come up with anything that hasn't been done a million times before, so I think this story does a great job at blending different elements together for its cultivation/system progression.
I'm really happy with how the story is going so far. Especially for a new one like this, I just really wanted to tell the author that they are doing great and to keep it up.
Style: I think the author's style is one of the main selling points for me. I like the descriptive, but not overly so prose, and I'm a major fan of the way different POVs are used to show us more of the world that's being cooked up.
Story: They beginning of the story immediately sets up our MC as a weak minded coward who has almost been led astray at some point. As we continue on, Gil/Gilbert has realistic and meaningful progression within his character. There's no immediate change where he is suddenly an edge lord like in so many series. (Fingers crossed he never goes the emo route)
Pacing is mostly consistent with very few moments that could have been transitioned better. I don't tend to notice anything that comes across as unnatural.
Grammar: I've found that the grammar is quite solid overall. There are occasional sections with slightly awkward phrasing, or the odd typo somewhere. I think that a wide variety of punctuation is used to help stop repeating anything too much, but it can sometimes be a little off.
Character: As I touched on before, the MC is written in a realistic way. His actions always make sense when looking at his personality. He is constantly growing due to the never ending conflict he's thrown into, but his core always remains the same, anchoring down the changes.
Side characters have also been quite interesting, especially a particular spear wielding person who I won't spoil. They all have unique personalities, and I'm excited to see more of them since the MC has been
