If there’s one thing Frein can be proud of, it’s his girlfriend, Katherine. But one night, while assisting her campaign against the underground arena he works for, Frein takes an opportunity he can't refuse. A match to end a grudge against his blemished record with enough prize money to help him in his new life.
But he bit off more than he could chew, and now he’s going to die.
Or is he, really?
As Frein wakes up, an entirely new world awaits. And Katherine will be his guide throughout the journey.
What to expect?
- High Fantasy- Multiple POVs- A huge set of cast (goes hand-in-hand with MultiPoV) that are not cardboard cutouts- A large (but balanced) focus with the side characters- MC is not the only OP character (is the MC OP? Depends on how you look at it)- Hard Magic (explained and unexplained ones)- Worldbuilding- Monsters, lots of 'em (some you recognize, some you don't)- Long Chapters (now divided into smaller chunks)- Progression of multiple characters- Bunch of romance- The list goes on...
*Updates:Starting with Book 4, it is now twice a month, so I can focus on a new series you can enjoy!

- The Wild WitchRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The way the visitor is taken to a new world, and why he is fine with it, is refreshingly different from standard. The writing moves as freshly as a spring creek over all hurdles, and you get world info along the way. And it is not a standard fantasy world either. Brymeia is a bit like a good trip or a half-remembered dream flashed out.
I just finished chapter 4 and it will stay on my reading list. - BigThinkRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Brymeia: The Visitor is a fascinating sci-fi/isekai story with a unique twist to the usual formula. The initial beats seem rough, but the narrative unfolds magnificently once we get into the meat-and-potatoes fantasy side of things - leaving the safe familiarity of "our" world behind.
With that said, here is my review:
Style - 4.5/5
shallren's writing style really solidifies itself past Chapter 2, once things begin to heat up and delve more into the sci-fi and explicitly supernatural elements of the story. Prior to that, I felt a little lost with how the initial beats are set up - the introductory sequences seem to promise a more tropey/straight shonen-style narrative. However, as written prior, the rough intro belies the beautiful, evocative writing that shines throughout the rest of the work.
Once Frein and Katherine leave "our world" and end up in Brymeia and (spoiler)
Schrodie/the Gatekeeper's Realm
, that is when the writing truly shines in capturing the strange and almost psychedelic nature of another, alien world.
Story - 4/5
Like I said, my main issues with Brymeia are with the initial set-up for the abduction. The story prior to Chapter 2-2 feels somewhat rushed, which I feel is encapsulated with how Frein reacts to (spoiler)
his girlfriend being an alien.
It might be from a difference in pacing preferences, but it feels like the narrative could have used a bit more time in establishing an emotional connection to "our" world before delving into the wonders of Brymeia.
Grammar - 5/5
No complaints here.
Character - 4.5/5
Overall, everything reads well when it comes to Frein and Katherine. I definitely feel like Katherine is the better-developed of the pair however. Frein stands as a funny tough-guy persona, but beyond his brawling skills and teasing of Katherine I feel like there isn't much more to his character as of Chapter 4-2 besides "I love my alien girlfriend".
We see less of Frein's internal monologue/thoughts on a lot of really important scenes (spoil - EarthFireRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Definitely a deep roller coaster of a story. Characters well fleshed out and amazing world building at work here. Can not wait to see how it all turns out!
Not often you find a story that pulls you in like this.
I could actually see this being turned into an anime or manga it is so well written. - LAScottRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Disclaimer: review swap, however I was already following this story so this is coming from someone who has been enjoying! I first encountered this story through a comment giveaway where it was pitched to me as "Dude finds out his girlfriend is an alien and forces her to essentially abduct him, no matter the consequences. And the consequences will probably really get you right down the feels."
The pitch is true, but also severely undersells this hidden gem of a story. Seriously, I didn’t expect to encounter a feudal monarchy from that pitch but I’m in no way upset about it! World-building is the author's strength, full stop. They’ve put all kinds of effort into crafting not only one world, but a comprehensive universe that’s complete with distinct races, multiple worlds, their own brand of magic (Meiyal Arts) and unique animals (the yumas are a delight). There’s also two (what I believe are) convergent storylines, each with their own complexities.
I don’t mean this as a criticism but it is not a casual read. The level of detail put into it demands a proportionate amount of attention to follow, and this may scare off some readers. Stylistically, though heavy on details, this is a beautiful piece of literature, so this will likely be what keeps people engaged long term.
The plot is very character driven. The big pro here is that the dialogue is organic and flows very well. The only real thing I struggle with in this story is that there are a lot of characters at play over the two plot lines, fairly early on into the story. They’re sharing a lot of airtime with each other, and it can be difficult to discern who is who because we haven’t had a lot of time to really dig deep into the characters yet. I would love to see more of the two MCs brought forward as part of the pitch, however it’s not a big deal either because my solution is to just keep reading, so I’m sure I will get there.
There are no apparent grammatical issues, and it's apparent that the author puts a lot of - Lucksinia GrimholdRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I will start this review with the problem point. The World is so unusually Deep, that when all of this new terminology gets dumped in the first chapters, it's quite a Nightmare(Hah! Didn't saw this one. Underlined it.) for a reader like me. (I would've rate the story 4.8/5 for this, but alas...)
Brymea is quite a Schemer herself, so patterns of how the world lives are quite apparent to the Trained Eye. Considering the Main Characters are literally Detective and her assistant... They're cracking those patterns like nothing.
Fair warning, If you can't stand multiple characters POV, this is not your story. There can be too much of jumping between them, and author knows, and tries to mitigate the sheer distance between the POVs.
But if you don't care about that, please, indulge yourself in the vast and complicated world of Brymea, Visitor. After all, you don't have much time... - AjrarnRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Brimeia isn't the ordinary story made on RR.
The world itself was created by the autor, and already it did see some stories, role play where the author and his friends played.
This is a mature world, and I find the story quite mature too, with perfect grammar as a cherry on top.
I love this story, and it will become a great saga. Thank you Shallren for your work ! - Kia LeepRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall: 5/5
Brymeia starts off by dropping us into the midst of things. Frein, our MC, is an accomplished fighter, and we get to witness a decisive victory right in the opening pages. Things escalate from there with hints of magic (or perhaps sufficiently advanced science) and otherworldly reveals on his girlfriend's behalf. The chapter I ended with leaves off with quite a large obstacle/stake, so it will be interesting to see how that is surmounted as the story unfolds.
Style: 4.5/5
The prose is written in a clear close 3rd person past tense, making it easy to read. My only (small) complaint was that we had 3 different PoVs in the first 10k words, one of which felt like an unnecessary 1-off PoV (though I suppose that remains to be seen.) Never can have too much of the MCs :)
Story: 4.5/5
As a result of getting dropped into the middle of the story, I almost wish we had more about the two MCs and love interests before the story begun! We briefly see them meet each other for the first time, then it skips 4 years later to them already being in an established relationship. We're told stuff that's happened - like Katherine teaching Frein how to use some of her science/magic - but we didn't get to see these scenes play out. I would have loved to see these two getting to know each other and falling in love before the plot hit in these opening chapters! It would help me feel a lot more attached both to each character and to their relationship. Perhaps that's personal preference, however.
Grammar: 5/5
The grammar was strong, and I only noticed very spare typos. Definitely written/edited with more care than the average RR story. No complaints here!
Character: 5/5
The characters come from very different backgrounds and experiences, so it will be interesting to see how their different cultures and values end up interacting with each others. We see Frein bullied a lot for his name (although, I was never really sure why, as the name doesn't seem that strange to me) and Katherine - FelixBRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Brymeia’s strongest aspect is its world. We’re first introduced to it through Frein’s eyes, and as a visitor from Earth he serves as a good entry point. Another POV character is introduced and by nature of their position they are extremely steeped in the politics and machinations of the setting. Discovery has been the greatest pleasure in reading Brymeia. You’re thrown into the deep end of a new setting and uncovering what it is and how it works has been the main thrust of what I’ve read so far.
In my reading, the mannerisms and behaviours of the characters came across a little distant or nonchalant to me. I’d chalk that up to the fact that, other than Frein, these are people from an entirely different existence. Though even Frein takes many things in stride despite the unusual and life altering things he experiences early on. The characterisation has lent the story a dreamlike feeling. We discover strange and fantastical things early and often but there is enough grounding to keep the reader anchored in this imaginative world. Frein’s lust for adventure and his bond with Katherine as well as Kristel’s royal responsibilities kept me engaged while the narrative took its time to fill in the details of the setting.
The meiyal arts are an intriguing magic system, and, like the world-building, seems to have had quite a lot of thought put into it. It also plays a role in Frein’s ticking clock, an aspect of the story that, despite its deliberate pace, does give the narrative an overall sense of urgency.
This is not a casual read. The descriptions are dense and the pace is deliberate, but once I’d settled into the pace of the narrative I found it relaxing to learn about the world, its politics, characters and magic. Recommended for readers looking for something substantial to sink into. - Magius SwiftscaleRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I was drawn into the intrigue of this world of Brymeia and understanding the mysteries. Not everything is laid out at the beginning, and that's by design--part of the mystery is understanding how all the building blocks are put together as more are introduced in-story (characters, the magic itself, the nature of the Visitors--but I shall keep this spoiler free)
Style wise, I have no complaints. it's told from a passive-tense 3rd person, and transitions are fluid and seamless. It also has the consistency to project the characters internal thoughts, understanding their decision making--especially the fight scenes early on, watching Frein deconstruct his opponents strats--and then donating the winnings after. Though apparently some took offense to him simply winning. Descriptors are crisp--from the broken teeth in the arena, to the color patterns and feel of a rustic estate on a far-away world. and bathrooms--toiletries got mentioned a few times! I don't know why, but I find that funny! Also the days named after colors in Brymeia. It's those little bits of flavor that add to the experience.
Story wise, there's lots of intrigue. A very gentle hint from the author is that you should pay attention to the little clues sprinkled throughout, and there is some ambiguity at first that keeps you guessing. I'm still not quite over why anyone would sign up for a one-way trip with a countdown timer, but that, itself is part of the mystery. Where I left off, there's also court intrigue as the princess runs her day-to-day tasks, and I'll keep reading to see where this goes.
Grammar, I can't complain too much. I found a few teeny-tiny things (verb tense, a few typos that my brain auto-corrected). I'm pretty forgiving of that sort of thing, and it never truly broke my immersion.
The characters are fun! I love the little teases that Frein and Katherine, and others later, that hint to the full nature of each others relationships. It's lighthearted thus far, and it's nice to see them kee - Lunatic42Royal Road★★ 2.0The world the author has built feels so very well thought out and beautiful but my biggest gripe is the pov shift. Would've really appreciated if the author only used the pov of the main duo in the beginning. Kristel's povs felt soo out of place since I felt no attachment to some random genius princess and her even more genius entourage and it felt kinda like she was kinda thrown at our face. It would've been bearable if her pov came once every 3-4 chaps or something but nope it became the other way around, due to which I'll be dropping it.
Everything other than this was wonderfully crafted but this pov thing was not a pleasant experience
