Sometimes dying isn’t even the worst part of your day
Mark has been reincarnated into a dead town in a bog, one that has been recently destroyed and occupied by ravenous undead. They disappear every day and return again at night, mindless and hungry, hunting for any survivors. He’ll need to use cunning and subterfuge to avoid them, because since he was transported into the body of a child, he can’t level up. At least not yet.
Bog Standard. It means “totally normal”, right? But for the small towns found in these bogs, there's no quick rescue and not much trade. Everything has to be made to last. To them, it means "excellent quality". Mark will have to prove he's Bog Standard if he hopes to survive.
This is an Isekai of excellent quality. It’s a progression fantasy set in a LitRPG world, rags to riches with an eventual OP main character. The pacing is slow-burn, incremental progression, sometimes slice-of-life, punctuated by moments of intense violence and possibly traumatic content.

- AinikkitheArchivistRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I tore through the first book so fast and then read it again immediately, gave it to my mom and best friend and converted them to LitRPG/Isekai, neither of which they'd read before (with the exception of Ascendance of a Bookworm, which is a whole different animal). And they liked it as much as I did, for the same reason: the characters. It's not just Brin (Mark Error made my mom laugh her head off), but Hogg, the crazy village they settle in, the pet dragon, the villains, Brin's various adoptive hero relatives, all of it--it reads like a high-concept fantasy novel from the last golden age of fantasy in the '70s and '80s, and I can give it no higher praise than that. Good ideas, actions that have consequences, and real growth for the characters. The setting is not just window dressing; it is vital to how the plot develops. I want more books like this.
That said, it's not groundbreaking or earthshattering--Bog Standard Isekai is both an apt descriptor and a terrible pun--but darn it, reading this is fun. It has the right blend of humor and seriousness. Pacing is always good: there are no dull moments but nothing feels rushed either. The coziest book about a burgeoning necromancer army looming on the horizon that I've ever read, for sure.
The title almost put me off. I'm glad it didn't. And I'm excited for what is to come. - MacheteRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story starts with a slow burn, but the writer does a great job creating tension and keeping the reader interested as they build the world for us to enjoy. Definitely worth the chance if you're looking for a good read! RPG definitely plays a big part, so expect a lot of numbers.
- AnandRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I wasn't sold after reading the first chapter, but as I kept reading I got more and more into it. I think the way he does stats and abilities and character classes is very cool and interesting. There are a lot of plot points going on and I'm finding myself constantly guessing about what's going to happen next. I also like learning details about random medieval trades and this book has some good stuff with that. Almost 100k words in and I'm excited to see where it goes.
- CapaluchuRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love LitRPG, but I often bail on stories where the MC becomes an unstoppable war-machine right off the bat. Bog started slow, then powered for a bit, then flipped the table in the final act more than once. I enjoyed this book so much, I didn't put it down at all. Read straight through, beginning to end in one day. It was easy to do. Solid writing, relatable characters, great dialog, you name it Miles nailed it.
Book One is moving to AMZ, which was my impetus to start, but I plan to buy it when it gets there so I can reread it again and again.
Thank you. That was the most enjoyable read I've had in a long while. - Courthunt5248Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really like the characters and the plot so far. I will not deny that marksi is adorable. I really like how he “talks” to himself it is very interesting. I never thought of it that way. I can’t wait to read more! I haven’t read many Litrpg’s yet but I think this one is creative.
- AhppyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story hits all the standard isekai notes. Nothing particular about this story stands out as of Part 2 Chapter 5. However, the execution is where it separates from the other stories you may find on the website. The writing is great. It's well written, the characters are interesting, and the story is keeps my interest.
- JustHawkyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Incrediby good, subscribe to patreon from time to time because it is so good.
I feel most of the flaws in the work are character flaws of the MC or cast, as in they do things and take paths that you think they shouldn't, but in general it is incredibly entertaining with plenty of progression, but without the flaw of much progression where many things feel inconsequential or inevitable.
Achievements feel earned, things are rarely resolved perectly which is realistic, the MC is still a small fry in the scheme of things even if he can occasionally see more of the big picture than most others.
The things that I would say makes the world revolve around him a little too much is that the people he interacts with regularly are all exceptional, or on their way to becoming exceptional, but that obviously can't be everyone. It makes sense from a narrative point of view, because you don't want his peers to be people that will become increasingly irrelevant as time passes due to having no strength and not growing, but it doesn't make sense from a worldbuilding point of view.
Unless a lot of people die in the near future to explain that exceptional people have to take risks to grow fast, and many do die due to said risks, then I can't see a solution for this. However, even with no solution, it is still an amazing story, 10/10 have recommended to friends and will recommend in future. - JustInTheCloudRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The most well-rounded exploration of the isekai genre since Jobless Reincarnation and The Beginning After the End. World building at its best! The Heroes feel like epic characters straight out of pages of 5th Edition. I love the pacing and direction that [Weaves] the grand tapestry of great narrative storytelling brought to life with Brin!! This story is only in part 3 of Book 1 and has already surpassed and taken the mantle of number #1 D&D inspired fantasy novels of all time! I don't have much else to say but where to find the book signing when this is completed and becomes a worldwide phenomenon!?!
- Luca ArcangeliRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story: good progression
Characters: MC is one of the few examples of an isekai into a child where the result isn't a snotty know it all or a lonely sociopath. I really like the secondary characters, they are given the right and different dimensions so that it's actually quite easy to differenciate and appreciate them.
World building: good start, the story center on a small village on the middle of nowhere so it's still very much in progress.
Flow: easy to read. Combact scenes are actually undestandable and dialogues are realistic. - MozgovedRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Ok, this would be a glorifying review :)
The book really hooked me up. It's easy to read on the eyes and the story keeps your attention invested.
Though it formally starts as an isekai, here the isekai part is just a pointless trope. It doesn't do anything to the story. The boy could have really been an orphan from a local village. Some flashbacks to his previous existance are really not much then fillers, trying to substantiate why there was an isekai trope in the first place. The author even plays a neat trick with this, saying the hormones in the boys body make him a real boy mentally and physiologically, deteriorating the isekai component even further into oblivion.
Otherwise the world is great, the characters are fun, the meta plot is logical with minor surprises and no abhorrent bullshit, trying to surprise the reader. The magic system is a bit non-existant at this point, as in there is magic but there is no system to it. The class system is given some foundation though and it IS captivating and interesting. There is a hint to a skill system also.
Hope this goes in the right direction and give us interesting classes, meta plot and skill system.
I wonder if the MC becomes a warrior or a mage :) This suspence alone makes the book interesting.
Update: dropped at chapter 3-30 as the book has completely lost its focus, direction and the mystical horror charm I loved it for initially. I still give this book 5 stars as the first two books are an awesome isekai story , one of the best on RR. Just do yourself a favour and don't read book 3, it is empty and hollow, devoid of ideas. Local authors don't know when to stop writing, even if the idea of a book is complete.
