The writing is great, but the characters are one dimensional. Everything in the story feels vaguely familiar and that's because there is nothing too original about it. Downtrodden MC with a mysterious past. A modern world marred with portals full of monsters. Haughty nobles whose only purpose is hounding the MC. Useless authority figures. Classic hallmarks of the manhwa-inspired progression fantasy plaguing this site right now.
However, the one area this story shines is in its prose. The author has a real knack for writing tense, by the edge of your seat moments. Theres only been a few chapters where it shines, but each of those times have been a treat. The lulls of trepid calm punctuated by moments of action. The feeling of being hunted and stalked.
If this fic moves away from the tropes and dives deep into horror and suspense, I think it's got a bright future.
