Description

The Field Rat's Banquet:

On the western shores of Kliskorios, a King sits without an heir. With his three children unwilling to allow each other to sit upon the throne, and a realm unable to decide the legal successor, the Kingdom of Teleytaios, strongest of the Heptarchy, stands on the brink of civil war, vultures circling all the while.

King Cordan's bastard son has proven himself in battle and rulership both in the last half a decade, though the coming challenges will put to test even the greatest of his efforts. After all, to kill an enemy is one thing, but what about his own siblings? There is no man as accursed as the kinslayer, so the saying goes.

The royal daughter, ever a staunch traditionalist and dangerous opponent, stacks the cards and the court in her favour whilst her brothers, bastard and trueborn both, waste away far from the capital. With the masses of dispossessed lords and ladies of the kingdom at her beck and call, there are few who find themselves outside of her reach.

The King's trueborn son, widely regarded as being mad and violent, will act as the wildcard in the coming feud. Whoever he chooses to support will surely triumph, though perhaps there is more to the youngest prince than meets the eye?

But there is more to the rising tensions than a simple succession crisis.Ancient things are waking up the world over; Brythonic sailors let slip the things they have glimpsed in the Ouroborisian Sea in Anarian taverns, and the whispers of gutter rats and holy men alike tell of a cult long thought dead hiding in plain sight. And then there are the findings of the King's own bastard son in the northern reaches of the kingdom.

When these threads coincide, fate may find itself rewritten by mortal hands for the first time since time immemorial.

With ancient forces awakening and a cult thought to be long dead resurfacing, the fate of the kingdom rests on the shoulders of the king's bastard son who must navigate the political landscape and his own siblings to save the realm.

The most popular branch of fantasy on Royal Road is, without doubt, the LitRPG. Several can be found on Rising Stars at any particular time. Opinions on LitRPGs and System stories may vary wildly, but the biggest draw of most seems to be the action, quick pace, and the ease of tracking how strong the characters can grow. An Angel Called Eternity, meanwhile, seems to harken back to older eras of fantasy, such as LotR. Much like LotR, An Angel Called Eternity is interested in telliing a broader and more complex tale, with strong themes of friendship and human connection.
After a prologue which sweeps across the world of Anamanesis, teasing at the countries and peoples existing within, we are introduced to Lykourgos, the bastard prince of a kingdom on the brink of a civil war, who also happens to have an interest in history and the occult. Over the next several chapters we meet his retinue and his siblings, as the civil war breaks out and Lykourgos is forced to command soldiers against his siblings. Fortunately, Lykourgos is not without allies nor experience.
Style may not be to the taste of the average web novel reader, feeling more like a print book, but I found it refreshing. Excellent prose. Characters are overflowing with, well, character. Most introduced thus far feel quite well-realized, I only wish we could spend more time with some of them so we can get a better feel for them. Story is also good so far, balancing supernatural mysteries, a civil war with lots of medieval warfare, political intrigue, and the web of relationships between characters. The worldbuilding is incredibly well-developed, and anyone familiar with early Britain and Europe can tell it's quite well-researched. Grammar is usually pretty good, but the author has a few specific grammar errors they keep repeating-- usually misspelliing 'I'm' as 'im' or missing a word in a sentence. Regardless, it's incredibly legible and coherent.
Deserving of far more attention than it's presently got.

How does this gripping of a story not have so many more reviews? This is truly a masterpiece in the works Mr. Author, and while I don't prefer all the gay innuendos I shall continue to follow this nevertheless. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful world with the rest of us.

Now that I have read all the way through the first volume of this novel, I have decided to re-do my review to let everyone know that-
This is genuinely the best series I have read on the site so far for certain!
I am friends with the author and as per the rules I should disclose this, but I like to be honest, and this is an excellent piece of epic fantasy that should be on a table or shelf in Waterstones in hardcover (For you Americans the closest comparison is Barnes and Noble here). As such it is written as a proper print novel, so this is a fair bit denser than your average fare on RR as a bit of warning, but I love that, so I am not complaining. But I promise you, if you give this series a chance and you’re happy to give it your time you will not regret it. I’d especially recommend anyone who likes ASOIF to stop reading this review and start actually reading this book now as the tone of the setting is certainly inspired by it and as such, you’ll be quite likely to like this series.
There is everything you could want from Epic fantasy here. Deep worldbuilding, colourful characters, wars and battles, occult and ancient mysteries, politicking, and a lot more that is going on behind the scenes… Suffice it to say you’re in for a well-balanced and classic mix here. It’s the sorta stuff that I run off of.
Look if you wanna try reading epic fantasy, read this. It’s free and if this doesn’t snare you, I’m not sure what will. Break the chains of the blue table and instead embrace people’s skulls getting caved in by a properly executed half-sword pummel hit!
    But anyway, the categories!
    Style:
The prose is excellent and of high quality, perfectly fitting the tone and the scenes which it describes.
    Story:
While some things take some time to build up we are quite quickly thrown into a civil war with all the fighting and intrigue it causes. Not to mention all the stuff that goes on in the background! Everything pays off here, from the man found in the first chapter, the previo
