Description
The kingdom's last defender had one chance to send his memories back in time. He chose wrong. The Sword Warden of Cravess watched his knights burn alive as Black Mana consumed all that remained of his lands. With his dying breath, he passed on his memories to sixteen years in the past— except with a catch. He could choose anyone but himself as the recipient of those memories. His choice? His best friend, Lucan Velmoria. The genius who'd killed a Fourth-Circle Blood Mage as a Second-Circle Journeyman. The prodigy who surpassed every Combat Mage in the academy despite dropping out. The man who'd died saving his life. Except that genius never existed. The real Lucan Velmoria is an outcast drowning in wine, heir to a dukedom he never wanted. His Shadow Mana affinity? Worthless—no one's ever advanced past Second-Circle with it. Those legendary feats? He has no idea how his future self accomplished them. But with his half-sister marked for assassination, his mother trapped in endless sleep, and the Duchess' endless machinations, he must embrace the impossible techniques in his inherited memories and prevent his kingdom's annihilation. He has sixteen years to rewrite the ending.

q q q q a a q q q w w w w w w w w w w w w w w q q q - LascarRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Writing this at Chapter 17. This is a solid performance; I enjoy the concept and execution. As of chapter 17 very little personal growth has occurred for the main character capability wise, the plot is in the early stages of this particular rascally young master trope.
The voice and description of setting is very well done. The character building for secondary characters is also well done. The common problem with stories like this is simply the process of time. Turning an alcoholic into a respectable hero is difficult to do, addiction seems like an easy plot device but to accurately represent the difficulty and time that it takes to turn away from something like that is a big ask. It doesn't seem to serve this plot well, though it is the early days and I would be happy to be proved wrong. The main character is abused by his family sure, and the staff is against him out of self-preservation, makes sense, and his affection for his family and friends serves as an excellent driving force for his character. I think the emotional constraints from the abuse and neglect are an excellent point to start the U-turn, the alcoholism is unnecessary in my opinion, though it does make some sense in context. It either needs to be feathered out with more supporting details or abandoned.
That being said, this is a good story and my opinions on the story are the perspective of a myopic reader with little understanding of the authors plans. I'm looking forward to the coming chapters and will avidly read them as they appear. - LauralanaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0At first I was surpised how quickly this story captured me. Then I had a look at the author and stopped wondering. I've yet to find something by Daoist Enigma that I dislike.
Admittedly I don't love Wastrel Heir quite as much as Cultivating Chai, but that is because Wastrel Heir is a darker story than the lighthearted Cultivating Chai.
Wastrel Heir is (as the titel implies) about a young heir (Lucan Velmoria), who has wasted his life so far and now has to turn it around. Stories like that often come with an Isekai or an Reincarnation element, this one goes with Regressor instead.
But here is where things take an unexpected turn (at least for me) because the main character doesn't get his own memories from the future but that of a different person (one Silvas Anderle).
It never occured to me before how drasticly such a little thing could change the tone of a story.
Unlike the typical selfconfident, determined hero of this kind of story, who knows exactly what the future holds for him, we get a deeply shaken main character who feels in completely over his head.
The memories Lucan has inherited claim he'll eventually gain power in the future, but give him no clue as to how or why. Silvas was a sword fighter not a mage like him so the knowlegde about skills and techniques Lucan got from Silvas are largely useless for him.
Yet the stakes couldn't be higher and cursing Silvas Anderle (frequently) for choosing him doesn't help.
It's so easy to feel deep empathy with Lucan and I can't wait to read more... - StrikingEngineRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story has lots of potential! With a likeable main character and interesting plot I am looking foward to seeing where this will go, Lucan is a likeable character that is going through stuff, and I like that the author makes it believable, I feel like this has the potential to be one of the greats so I am happy I got to start reading it so soon after it’s release, one thing I will say is that is is a bit of a slow burn so be prepared for that, but I still think it’s worth it
- TWhitRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0really really enjoying this one, the characters behave in a realistic fashion, even the character quickly going cold turkey on alcoholism when he has his life completely upheaved. My only complaint is that there isn't a Patreon currently where I can binge more chapters. bleep boop floof poop blah blah yack how many more words do I need to post this. yadda yadda yadda, any day now really.
- acausalRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but I was very pleasantly surprised. I normally don't do reviews this early on, but it's the only way I have of encouraging the author to continue writing this, which is something I'd like to see happen. So, that in mind, maybe you might feel the same way if you read it. I can't imagine you'll regret giving it a shot.
- KeywielderRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Currently up to date with the story, haven’t had too much of a peak inside the world but so far what I’ve seen has been great! Each chapter has a lot of detail and are easy to read. The MC is interesting, a former wastrel changed by memories of another man, he’s trying to turn his life around, looking forward to him unlocking magic sometime soon! The academy hasn’t started up but looking forward to all the politicos and rivalries, and to the MC not being a wastrel anymore. Overall very excited to see more
- WizeonRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5It’s been genuinely interesting so far, and I’m enjoying the reading experience more than I expected. One thing that stands out immediately is the author’s writing style — they take the time to explain even the smallest details. Normally that might feel slow, but here it actually works. It adds clarity, makes scenes easier to imagine, and improves immersion instead of rushing through important moments. The characters are also pretty solid so far. They feel distinct and believable, and their actions make sense within the story’s setting. Even though it has only been around 25 chapters, the cast already feels promising and worth following. The world building is especially strong for this stage of the story. There hasn’t been a huge amount of time to fully develop everything yet, but the author consistently adds details that build up the world naturally. The explanations help establish the setting, the characters, and how the magic system and other mechanisms work, which makes the story feel more structured and well thought-out.Overall, it’s a strong start with good pacing, solid characters, and an engaging foundation. I’m looking forward to seeing how the plot and world expand from here.My review was like 50 or so words, but I needed 200 words to publish a review. Does royal road think I'm a writer too? I unfortunately had to take some help, please forgive me.
- TheEarlofBronzeRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5Simply put, i am in agreement with the critiques by the other reviews. The story commits the cardinal sin of being boring. I found myself scrolling past paragraph after paragraph... during the prologue.
When you're "hook" is boring, something is critically wrong.
I read on thinking perhaps it was just a rocky start, many stories have them as the authors find their rhythm. But unfortunately, the authors rhythm was just boring.
It's hard to pinpoint exactly, but for me it's a combination of poor literary style and excessive expostion/info dumping. Every story will have a moment or two where shit just needs explained, that's fine, if the content is interesting enough then even if the writing style is mediocre, it's fine. On the other hand sometimes even if the content is boring, but it's written beautifully and is relevant to progressing character or plot, then it's fine.
None of that happens here.
13 decently length chapters in and we've had 3 characters met (once each) and a sword has been purchased.
It's just not worth my time, frankly.
But, as the many positive reviews show, perhaps you might still enjoy it. I left the rating at a 3.5 because while writing a boring story is somewhat of a literary crime, it's not like there's no positives to the story at all, they're just all overshadowed by the poor style.
Perhaps you'll get more enjoyment out of it then I did. - imraefiRoyal Road★★★ 2.5Pros: Author has clearly given a lot of thought to worldbuilding. Interesting hook and useful explanations of how the world ticks.
Cons: Dialogue reads very dramatically, like it's coming from a dubbed anime character or a JRPG. Many aspects of the world are over-explained. Even the character motivations in dialogue have this drawback.
For example, Chapter 5 introduces a character named Janis:
“Janis,” Lucan acknowledged in a formal tone.
In response, the man vaulted over the guard post’s railing, landing upon the ground without so much as making a sound upon landing.
...
“Young Lord,” Janis Caravine, heir apparent to House Caravine, greeted him with a quick bow. “Are you heading somewhere?” He asked, in a crisp tone that was well suited to his appearance. His black hair shone with a luster that was characteristic of Aura Augmentation, his square jaw and sharp jawline cutting a particularly handsome visage.
The ellipses I placed in the spoiler box captures 1300 words of exposition between Janis' vault and the continuation of the scene. Maybe the exposition was necessary, but it's definitely poorly placed.
Furthermore, at the end of the chapter, we have an example of overexplained dialogue:
“Pardon?” Janis asked, caught off guard for the first time since he’d been assigned to guard him.
...
Not willing to be caught off-guard a second time, Janis replied, “Ashfall & Sons, young lord."
There's really no need for the explanation that he's caught off guard. It adds very little.
All in all, these things are very grating and drag down the interesting worldbuilding.
