It's only when she starts looking for answers that she discovers just how deep the rabbit hole goes, and just how many others there may be in the world, dripping with the smell of fresh blood and leading up, up, up, deeper into a place she cannot comprehend. What else is tied to this strange world of flesh? What other people have been touched by it, and that which inhabits it? What are the sides to this conflict she can't yet see? What will she become as she digs deeper into what is- and what might be? What To Expect: Body Horror of the Eldritch variety Lovecraftian horrors beyond human comprehension Action! Romance! Drama! - AntsyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Viscerae lives up to the name, rather a lot of really cool body horror. The descriptions of all the fucked up things™ are delightfully squirmy, and explain just enough to give a glimpse beyond the veil.
The peeks into the worldbuilding that we've seen so far are also neat. As I'm writing this it's starting to get to the real meat of the story, with tons of tasty plot hooks that are on the periphery and approaching ever closer.
The Characters so far are interesting too! Ilia is straight up not having a fun time. I can relate to her rather alot, being trans probably helps but in general i relate to her struggles. I'm liking the looks of the B plot (?) also, it feels very SCP.
Overall, really well written so far! I'm excited to see where this just slightly horrific world goes from here. - Available UsernameRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is one of the few web serials that I recommend to my friends outside of this sites community. I love the aesthetic that the author creates and it truly is unique. The VR hook is something that i feel puts a lot of people off from reading something like this but the horror/urban legend/SCP aspects of the story quickly make that not as relevant and I encourage anyone that likes weird or unique aesthetics to give this a try. Can't wait for a new chapter!
- AzeltorezRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story follows a trans woman, and her delving into the MEATY, BLOODY GOODNESS that is the "normal" VR game MEAT, which has some weird stuff about it on the internet.
The story is good. Really good. And the descriptions of things are just the right shade of viscerally disgusting, while the main character is believable, sympathetic, and capable without being a mary sue. - D-VNRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0...I've got a new favorite horror author. Silv3rtongue's ability to consistently produce high quality, gripping, mind twisting body horror is unrivaled by any author I've read on or off this site. This feat is even more astonishing given she is currently juggling two such works (if you enjoy Viscerae and wish it had wuxia elements then you'll love Reforged from Ruin).
Spoiler free breakdown of my scores follows:
Overall: 5
Immensely enjoying the story so far and eagerly await every chapter.
Style: 5
Her ability to convey incomprehensible experiences is absolutely wild. When her work eventually becomes mainstream (and I truly believe it will) I don't doubt there will be entire term papers dedicated to her way of describing the indescribable.
Story: 5
I honestly don't know what to say. I don't want to spoil any of it so I can't give any examples, but there are so, so, so many examples of excellent worldbuilding and story crafting. Each arc builds on the ones that came before without forgetting even small details that seemed unimportant at the time.
Grammar: 5 (4.5)
There are some minor spelling and grammar errors if you read each chapter upon release (which you'll definitely want to do because you NEED to know what happens next) but Silv3rtongue is very open to critique and edit suggestions and is usually pretty quick to make corrections.
Character: 5+
I wish I could give bonus points here! Even small side characters with no real stake in the story feel well fleshed out and alive within the world (it's not their fault they aren't the MC). But the thing I love most is the relationships and the character growth. The characters actually respond to the crazy messed up things their loving author puts them through and they come out changed. Sometimes that change is for the better and sometimes it's just more trauma they have to carry, but that is what makes this story feel so real despite its absolutely unreal premise.
If you made it this far thank you for reading my review - Dame AlannaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Viscerae pulled me in and all I could do was hold on. The mystery, the psychological/body horror, and an engaging main character all bring this incredible story to life. It fills with a sense of wonder and terror that just makes me want more.
The protagonist is extremely relatable. Her struggles with body dysphoria and depression is sometimes hard to read, but only because it resonates with me so powerfully.
The story itself reminds me of the game Inscryption and maybe a little Stranger Things. The world building is interesting and the mystery of it makes me eager to know more.
I can't wait to continue sinking my teeth into this moist, MEATy, and horrifying story. - Dani Del DiaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The author does an elegant job of exploring and expanding upon this nightmarish universe. The "game" our heroine plays doesn't even come with a spiel of exposition or tutorial, but instead must be experienced firsthand and have its gory glory painstakingly shared through context, pain, and, finally, death! Shiver in disgust as she slowly learns about the puppet masters behind the world and the "players" that are closer to her than she thinks while she desperately tries not to catch anyone's eye~
- DrellzieRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Cool story so far. Was pretty quick in pulling me in and making me invested. Has done a great job describing the game and surrounding mystery. I'm kind of scared for the horrors the MC will probably have to go through. Although she ignored some pretty worrying signs, the escalation of the situation is quite extreme. Very interested in seeing where this goes.
- KaimeraBluRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I decided to read this story because I'm reading the author's first fiction, "Reforged from Ruin". Initially, when they first announced the start of another fiction, I felt like it wouldn't be as good as the one I'd been reading, but even though they are now both being written concurrently, I feel like the writing in Viscerae is better--even though RfR is very good. Perhaps it's because it's closer to the author's actual interests? RfR seems to have an extra degree of separation from the author than Vicerae.
- Kallan55Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This deprives me of the ability to breathe. Nothing seems to be left unconsidered, and I find myself theorycrafting with my girlfriend every chapter about the characters and about where the story is going. I love transhumanism themes and this is it done right with the perfect pairing of existential dread and game mechanics that deftly pulls at my endocrine system <3
- AeoleoneRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Viscerae is an intensely compelling read. I mean that in a literal sense; when this story updates, I am drawn to it in such an intense way. The writer manages to convey a sense of mystery and itch the makes me feel like it's under my own skin, waiting to be dug out. This is as uncomfortable as it is enthralling - I'd say the sensation of wanting to pick at a scab might be too on the nose, but only just.
The story's subject matter deals in body horror and discovery - I can't go too far into detail for both fear of spoilers and waiting for plots to unfold, but what's here is intense without droning on and constantly turning new corners that ignite the want to see what's next.
I read this story because of the joy in experiencing Ilia's exploration, discomfort, euphoria and dysphoria, as well as experiencing the author's use of the written medium in unique ways to tell the story.
You might not like this story if these ideas or themes are discomfiting to you, or if you prefer your stories a little more straight-forward; the author is unafraid to leave traps and hints that summer for chapters or arcs.
I recommend giving Viscerae a try for the feel of it more than anything else. The story is delightfully moist and sticky, and I'm only taking a half point for grammar due to very sparse, very minor, formatting issues.
