Description
This version is part of the original draft of the story. A full remake is currently in progress.
“Dying was unexpected. Reincarnating? Even weirder. Becoming king at fifteen? Absolutely not in the plan.”
Tyler Grant, a lazy Florida teen with a love for food and anime, wakes up asKael Drayke—the third prince of a cheerful little kingdom in a continent built on Wrath.
He’s got zero ambition, a snack addiction, and a talking skill system in his head namedGreat Sage.
But when his fifteen birthday reveals he’s the legendaryScourge of Wrath, Kael is crowned king on the spot.
The problem? He’d still rather nap than rule.
With secret skills hidden from the world, a kingdom full of heart, and a sarcastic AI voice always one step ahead, Kael is about to prove:
You don’t need rage to rule. Just brains, snacks… and a little fire.

- Magic_MeatballRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0🔥 I just finished both Volume 1 and Volume 2 (Chapters 1–60), and wow… this series is something else. It starts off strong and just keeps getting better. From Kael’s chaotic slime buddy to his deadpan, tactical AI voice in his head (shoutout to Great Sage), everything clicks. By the end of Volume 2? I was fully invested.
This story honestly deserves a manga, a WEBTOON, and an anime. The visuals, the emotion, the fights — they’d hit so hard on screen.
📖 Story – 5/5
Volume 1 is that perfect “from nothing to something” setup: a forgotten prince rebuilding a village with monsters and dungeon magic. Volume 2 dials it up — Kael awakens as the Scourge of Wrath, builds a multi-race alliance, and straight-up liberates a capital city without falling into the usual edgelord trap. It’s power fantasy done right — with actual heart.
✍️ Style – 5/5
The tone walks a great line between serious and fun. One minute you’re reading a heartfelt scene, the next Great Sage is roasting Kael for packing cinnamon rolls instead of healing potions. It’s smooth, readable, and never boring.
🧠 Grammar – 5/5
Super clean. I flew through all 60 chapters without stumbling over anything weird. It reads like something that’s already gone through a pro editor.
🧍 Characters – 5/5
Kael is relatable without being whiny, strong without being a jerk. Rimuru steals every scene he’s in, Nyaro is straight-up loyal beast goals, and the Ember Guard are the kind of squad you wish had their own manga. Even side characters feel distinct — nobody’s just filler.
📚 If You’re Into Stuff Like:
Tensura, The Beginning After the End, Chrysalis, Re:Monster, or even Jobless Reincarnation — this needs to be on your reading list. It has that perfect mix of emotional arcs, strategy, magic systems, and “oh snap” moments that make you binge the whole thing. - WyrmReader27Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0That Time I Got Reincarnated as a King surprised me in the best way. At first glance, I expected a typical isekai romp—but what I got was something far more carefully crafted. The pacing is deliberate in the early chapters, but it works in favor of the story’s introspective tone. This isn’t just about overpowered skills and flashy fights (though there are some great moments already)—it’s about building something: a kingdom, a cast, and a legacy.
What stood out to me most is the worldbuilding. From Emberleaf’s goblin village to the hints of a deeper magic system tied to the Seven Sins, everything feels like it’s been planned with care. The Great Sage’s interactions with Kael add a layer of humor and strategy that reminds me a bit of Tensura, but with a more grounded and reflective protagonist.
Kael himself is compelling. He’s not loud or edgy—he’s observant, quietly confident, and clearly has more going on than he lets on. I appreciated that his reincarnation powers weren’t dumped all at once. Instead, the story lets us grow into them as he does.
If I had one critique, it would be that the early pacing may feel slow for readers looking for constant action. But if you’re the type who enjoys the calm before the storm—where relationships are formed and seeds of plotlines are planted—this is worth sticking with.
I’ll definitely be following along. The tone, the lore, and the long-game storytelling all point toward a narrative that’s going to pay off in a big way. - slimesarecool69Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Just finished Chapter 2 and I’m literally counting down the minutes until Chapter 3 drops. This story has serious potential, and even this early on, it’s got me hooked. The reincarnation setup gave me Mushoku Tensei vibes in the best way possible—familiar, but with a fresh twist. The MC is easy to like, and there’s a grounded, humorous tone that sets it apart from other generic isekai intros.
But let’s be real—Great Sage steals the show. Their banter with the MC feels like Rimuru and Ciel from Tensura, but even sassier. I actually laughed out loud during a couple of their exchanges. If this keeps up, Great Sage might be one of my favorite supporting characters in any isekai.
The worldbuilding is off to a solid start too. We get just enough information to be curious—without info-dumping. I’m especially intrigued by the idea of the “Scourge of Wrath” and how that’ll play out politically and magically.
A few suggestions? I’d love to see more sensory details when it comes to magic and the world around the MC. The palace setting, the nobles, and even just the day-to-day life could feel even richer with those extra touches. Also, I really hope there’s room for slice-of-life downtime between major arcs. The tone is perfect for it.
Eight minutes until Chapter 3 hits… I’m so ready. - RoyalReader1011Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5Read 15 chapters for now and it was a pretty fun read through, the comedy blended pretty well with the story overall, I only feel the ressemblance to Tensura to be the one flaw but even then this story shows that it's self aware since a carachter is named Rimuru in the story and the execution was pretty good so you can look over this and give it a shot. Definetly worth it !
- CatgurlRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5i adore the mc Kael; I want to be him when I grow up. Smart, funny, and completely himself. I love how he learns and understands, and then firmly disregards convention and does his own thing.
World and characters are gradually being fleshed out. So far I love all the characters and am interested on where the story is going.
The dialog is witty and genuinely funny; one of the rare books where I find myself laughing out loud. There is also a thread of quiet good will and kindness running through this story that is a warm hug to the soul.
The writing skill shown here is outstanding - author understands the importance of understatement and showing (as opposed to explaining ad nauseum).
Just a great story. Good mix of adventure, friendship, humor and mystery. I am just at the point where the plot thickens - so fun! - adxRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5It's an intriguing world that the author has built here. The way it's put together is quite unusual, grammatically correct but there's something really unique about the way the words are lined up.
I'm enjoying the build up of powers and forces and the hits that there's something big coming this way. Plus it's made me chuckle a few times!
Definitely worth giving it a read! - Max DanRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0The story follows a laid-back teenager who dies in a freak accident and is reborn into a fantasy world as a royal prince, only to discover that the very power he’s been gifted might one day destroy everything he comes to care about.
Kael Drayke (formerly Tyler Grant) is an instantly likable protagonist. He’s not the typical overpowered isekai hero. He’s clever, sarcastic, and disarmingly real. Beneath his slacker exterior, he is a quietly noble soul.
The first five chapters do a fantastic job laying groundwork. We go from death and rebirth to court life, to forest exploration, and finally into full-on action with the Nyavari attack. The pacing escalates chapter by chapter while maintaining a grounded feel through Kael’s voice.
The writing is clean, confident, and well-edited, with a strong grasp of pacing and sentence rhythm. Dialogue is natural, especially for Kael, whose modern voice contrasts nicely against the more formal world around him.
The narrative voice is where this series truly shines. Kael’s modern, irreverent humor provides a running commentary that turns what could be generic fantasy into something fun and distinct.
That Time I Got Reincarnated As A King takes a familiar premise and infuses it with wit, warmth, and weight.
