Description

Volumes 1 to 3 of Tunnel Rat are Available on KU. Volume 4 will be coming out in February 25th on KU.(Which means the chapters in Volume 4 come off of RR by Feb 18th.)https://www.royalroad.com/amazon/B0D98TW5F2?maas=&ref=Milo lives in a steel cave within a man-made mountain of steel and concrete. He spends his days repairing the machinery that keeps the habitat livable and tinkering with the prosthetics that help his twisted body move about through the small tunnels and air shafts that are his world. He's as much a piece of discarded machinery as the equipment he keeps running. He likes to fix things, which is good because he sometimes breaks things. But lately, he's been getting bored, and for a super-genius, that's a bad thing. Luckily, the criminals he escaped from are back. Stealing everything from them will keep him busy, especially when he steals a new MK7 immersion pod used to enter the world of Genesis. Milo has always lived in the tunnels, and now he's a Tunnel Rat in looks, not just name. He wants to go deep into the world and find the ancient mysteries left by races that delved deep and stayed below. He'll find new mysteries to solve, new friends, things to fix, terrifying creatures to aggravate, and things to break. Hopefully, he fixes more than he breaks, or this new world might be in trouble. And thanks to the artist of that handsome rat for inspiration. Highly Recommended!
It is a VR story but the problem with VR is mainly in progression stories, VR progression is essentially fake progression.
Here VR is mainly a tool for the adventure and it's done well

Fantastic writing and interesting characters, realistic lacks of information means the characters feel like they live in the world described instead of being on top of it. People make good and bad decisions and have consequences spill out from them. Highly recommend reading this story though you might end up buying some new cheeses after a while.

I am slightly burned out from reading this entire story in three to four days, but I am very, very happy to have read it. Even if my own writing lagged a little because of it. And my sleep schedule was worse than usual. *coughs*
Pay attention to the story, if a character is named there is a good chance they are coming back later, and you don't always know who is going to be an ally or an antagonist.
Great world-building, fun characters, solid writing (has a slight habit of missing quotation marks or spaces, but if that is the worst I can say about it, that's pretty damn good). I am pleased.
The problems that are solved and the new problems that arise are neatly interwoven and overlap so you can see the next issue on the horizon. There's a nice slow-burn potential romance, plus some side characters who get married and have a fun relationship. There are some very good friends. And there is the best of all friends, Larry.
I know a ratling named Li who would get along fabulously with the ratkin Larry. They would be great friends and daring heroes and much chaos would ensue.

The series is one of the best I have seen in Royal Road, it is consistent, although it seems linear, it has jumps and twists in the plot that attract you, plus the characters feel really human in their development and ways of being, not counting the development emotional of the MC, I don't think I'll find another story like this in a long time, the only complaint, I'm a late reader so I have a lot to read, but since I don't suffer the wait, the fact that a big event breaks out from one chapter to the next overloads me, but I guess it's partly my fault XD

Really enjoying reading this one. Has tons of positive energy (despite the dark aspects of the story - impressive), fun characters, a great MC, good prose, good plot, lots of action - even good grammer and spelling, lol. In so many books lately, atmosphere is unrelentingly negative and most of the characters are despicable. In contrast, in this book,  there are plenty of bad guys and monsters and serious situations, but there are also tons of likeable and interesting characters and joyful moments - yay!!!  I rarely give 5 stars, but bonus star for good grammer and spelling, for the fun positivity and for actually succeeding in being funny in just the right spots. It is tough to write humor and I often find it is done badly; not so here. I even laughed out loud several times during the boss fight with the brood mother lurker. Author really understands how important it is to have fun on the journey; otherwise why go? Really a great book.  Thanks for writing it Mr. Author!

Saw this on audible and once I’d read it I had to have more! The story feels like a mix of “Super Minion” and “Kitty Cat Kill Sat” both also great stories. This one expands on that however by introducing the MC to an MMORPG! The story is very FUN and will feel rather relatable to the introverts out there.

Tunnel Rat is one of my favorites on Royal Road.  The author has crafted an excellent dual world where the use of technology allows for fantasy gaming also via pods which directly interface to the mind in effect creating a very real fantasy world too.  I especially like the aspect of Milo being paranoid due to his life as it makes him something of a loner who learns about human interactions and relationships slowly over time as he learns to trust others somewhat while beating the bad guys and becoming successful in a somewhat dystopian world. The individual hero is something not seen as much in modern fiction but Milo definitely fits that bill. His other project The Butcher of Gadobhra is also an excellent story in this same world, but is more an ensemble cast instead of a single hero, that said I also recommend you check it out too as it's also excellent but more what I term 'scooby gang' type characters then single hero. All and all... one of my all time favorites on here reminding me of the old Andre Norton books from the 50s and 60s in it's feel mixing interesting characters with adventure in a sci fi world.

I normally hate the outside perspective of vr novels, but this is something special, it's compelling from the start and rather than simply wishing to get back to the actual story I find it genuinely interesting and compelling. While it has some flaws comment to RR novels in terms of character development only applying to the main character most of the time, the development is interesting and the side characters aren't solely a vehicle for the story to progress, I think this wouldn't likely be the case if the story wasn't twinned to another but it is so that isn't relevant.
    Well worth a read

This is one of the very few VRMMO stories I have read that has what feels like an actual plausible working MMO that is seemingly fairly balanced while still allowing for MCs to have cool special moments without breaking the game and becoming some OP Mary suie that no real company would allow to exist. If you read the companion story of  BOG you get a better pov from multiple people and can see how the AI is allowing everyone to have cool stories but not break things in game in a yeah who the hell would allow this to actually happen situation like so many of the other VRMMOS out there.
    TLDR: Great story, read it!!!

Very cool & fun story. The world Mr. Walrus built is very fun to read about, and it's definitely one of my favorite novels on this site. I'm not very good at giving reviews or a very 'advanced' reader in general, so I'll leave it at that haha. It's not at all necessary to read Butcher of Gadobhra with this, but they take place in the same universe, so I recommend checking that out if you end up liking this.
