- BosloeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love the premise of this story. How the author has presented the underling Gob and his growth as his adventures begin in the wider world is brilliant from the weak-minded feeble creature he begins as and his continuing growth and development.
The inclusion of images showing the skill trees in the early chapters was a refreshing aspect, given how little he started with regarding understanding his position or abilities.
The way the story is written with the broken speech and sound effects is brilliant, giving even more character depth.
His guide, Kylie, adds a fun twist, and the relationships and characters are all relatable. In the early chapters, you are immediately drawn into feeling desperation for Gob at the hands of the supposed heroes and seeing it from his perspective adds to the story.
The combat system is fun and turn-based, and the skills are a complete mismatch of information, making it great to interpret and consider his options.
If anyone is after something fun and a little different, then it's a must-read. - C.H. MouserRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a fun filled monster progreshun done right! The interactions with the main character and surrounding cast really lets it shine and set a tone that is captivating. Gob is done very well and you can almost see yourself bobbing your head when he does.
Style: The Author has a unique style and works it into the story in amazing ways. The little nuances here and their really flow with the story giving it a sense of weight. I knocked it slightly as this style wont be for everyone.
Story: I thought the story was done great and played with ideas very well. I think some of the transitions could have been smoother but the way the Authors style and ideas were incorporated really spoke volumes for the Authors skill.
Grammar: I'm not the guy to be a grammar warrior so from my undiscerning eye it was fine. The grammar choice by the Author would have been a difficult task to achieve and shows Authors skill.
Character: This is where the story shows its true value and feels like the Author just let loose. Gob is done amazingly well and will grow to be a fan favorite. Kylie's chatter box personality really helped pull the story into something more and I look forward to seeing them grow. - CabbagesAndKingsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This ticks all of my boxes. It's a fun concept, an interesting system, and an unforgettable character. If you're looking for a grimdark exploration of the depths of depravity and the existential questions of existence, this is probably not the story for you. Although there's some subtle subtext here and there that hints at deeper stuff, this is mostly a glorious romp with the kind of MC that likes to eat his problems.
The SYSTEM feels well thought-out and it keeps me wondering about the next progression.
Funny as the characters are, they are also well-rounded and interesting, and feel solid enough to care about. The supporting characters feel like they had their own lives before the MC came along. They all have existing relationships before the story rather than just being random people gathered by the MC as he rolls along.
The story and plot feels like the work of an experienced author. I'm shocked to read that this is the author's first story. It makes me want to re-evaluate my life choices.
There are a few typos here and there, or duplicate words, but nothing that a good line edit wouldn't solve, and none of it spoils the read. - EldricWoodRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This book kicks off with a bang and doesn't let up! I'm only a handful of chapters in, but already I'm completely invested. The storytelling is clever and refreshingly original, narrated through the lens of a delightfully quirky protagonist. The voice is so distinct and utterly charming, I find myself eagerly reading each chapter.
- RavensFantasyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall Score: I first will say that this is the first type of story that I had read in this style format. With that being said, one of the things that I liked is how the author portrays the characters and has the view point be that of Gob the Troll. So far, with what I have read, the story is an interesting read.
Style: Having the story in the trolls point of view is very interesting to me. As I have yet to read a story like this yet. Overall, with the five chapters that I have read of the story so far, the author does well in writing how the Gob the troll thinks, talks, and acts.
Grammar: The overall grammar is good, I so far have not found any issues. My only problem was with reading Gob talk. But hey, it is troll language, something I’d imagine not being easy to understand. Probably not easy to write either so I give the Author props on that!
Characters: The characters in the story are loveable. To the point I hope Gob excels quite well and becomes the best troll he can be.
In conclusion, it is a good story so far! Keep up the good work! - SkarabraeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Welcome to a tale of trolls and an underdog troll named Gob.
Style: The style is very good. The author is able to set the right tone. The way of writing is unique, especially how the various trolls speak. I can also safely say that the literary technique of imagery is used well too. And the author makes great use of word choice.
Story: The story is very good. It has the right pacing and the plot develops well too. It is a combination of a LitRPG and an underdog story about a troll named Gob who is the runt of his pack. It does the underdog elements incredibly well, and I like the LitRPG elements too. There isn't anything particularly unique about them from my perspective, though you might disagree, but they are well enough done that they don't have to be unique.
Grammar: I couldn't find any grammatical errors. So, we're good here.
Character: The characters are great. They fit the story perfectly, and I can safely say that for both the main and side characters. I also think Gob is a great protagonist for this sort of story. He fills his role very well.
Overall, I would highly recommend this story. - dopplegerberRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Trol is a feel good adventure story about a violent alcoholic child and an interesting cast of supporting characters who teach Gob ( the main character ) about the world as he strives to complete his quest. Overall I can’t wait to see where this story goes as it continues on. Thank you:)
- gajensenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story
At first I was a bit taken aback by the point of view from a troll (not used to seeing it), but the more the story progressed, the more I relished Gob's perspective. I honestly wish there were more stories that take a riskier move like this one. It was so much fun seeing how a troll would respond to heroes waltzing into a troll den and what they would experience. The world feels very fleshed out as well, so there's lots to explore in this one.
Character
Gob has a consistent and fun character. His interactions with others never strays away from his personality (eet, git big). I loved his consistency and blunt cleverness he employs. I also really enjoyed the stark contrast between him and Kylz. It's a match made in heaven, or a cave, one of the two. Speaking of Kylz, fascinated to see her story play out too.
Style
Not used to sound effects but I really feel that it fits with the theme. My only suggestion would be to simply the visual display of stats, as I found those a bit difficult to read.
Grammar
At the beginning, I had a hard time understanding the troll language (also given its Australian dialect). But the more I read the easier it got and I found it quite enjoyable to see the world through a troll's perspective
Overall, the story is off to a great (and tasty) start! You should definitely give it a read. Best of luck on the writathon! - Sphynx_99Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5So, I haven't read much on RR but I have read my fair share of books and other stories and so far, I have not seen a story like this. It's fun, chaotic but everyone can still follow this. I love Gob, he's so cute. There's a lot of sound effects, which definitely adds to the story and is a nice touch.
What I also like is how it's portrayed as this goofy, fun story but actually is really good. It seems like a light read, but has some good, hidden messages. Definitely a good read!
Keep up the good work! - grimizenRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0As above, just read it, love it and share it. One thing to say in this section is that the chapters are a really good length, there might only be 23 so far but that is a lot of content. This is a fantastic character-driven fiction, well-written and with good drive and purpose.
Style:
This is probably TROL’s strongest point. Gob is a troll, with all the illiteracy that entails, and his primitive spoken word is conveyed superbly through the use of language that is simplistic in the extreme but calculated to still be entirely legible. I can’t do justice to what the author has achieved with the style of this story, I think it is best experienced.
Story:
So far the story hasn’t developed very far, but given that it is so heavily character-driven I’m perfectly happy to give it 5/5 on that basis.
Character:
This is where the meat of my recommendation lies; the characters or real, living things who I want to get to know; I can’t really say more than that. They are also worth getting to know, not being the same standard cardboard cutouts. I shan’t spoil anything around who we meet and their lives before meeting them, but just give this a go before you move on if nothing else.
Grammar:
This is a bit patchy, I will admit. There are a fair few mistakes that q good editorial pass would fix, but it’s still better than a good 90% of stories on RR. I’m a bit of a stickler for grammar, but I find that it doesn’t detract too much from the story itself, it’s just a shame not to have this diamond in the rough polished to perfection.
