Unremarkable. Patient.By the time anyone notices, it will be too late. Thrive: Unseen is a slow-burn LitRPG aboutthe terrifying things a mind can do. - 1011010Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is not what the title would make it out to be.
The main character is not the solo leveling aura farmer type or the dark mystery man of most.
He's a researcher. His power and how he uses it allows his to analyze hypothesize experiment and draw conclusions he uses to progress.
The progression is wonderful, I haven't felt like I was being rushed with info, the author feeds the info through dialogue and reactions.
He stays on his tasks but we still see alot of interaction between his family friends teachers and shopkeepers.(Even if I personally want more)
Things like mental illness family relationships and treated with respect and aren't snapped better for no reason.
This is not a statts go burr at least not yet. He refuses to level untill he has an understanding of his environment and the basics of the trials.
he abuses mechanics pushes them to their limit and breaks records even if the others progress levels faster.
I haven't had any issues with grammer or understanding of the novels so far and anything you don't understand immediately has either been explained later or isn't major to the understanding of the plot.
Their isn't a clear end goal right now but it's fairly understandable for how new it is,the basics I've got right now are -he's a researcher going through the trials and leveling while getting a fundamental understanding of the universe.(Possible rebellion or breaking system plot)
Honestly I'm planning on running with this noves with the hope it stays at this quality. - BungusChungusRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0When I first stumbled on this story, I directly went to the reviews like most people do and saw some of the criticisms people had. Initially it made me shy away from the story (sadly) but I kept it in my Read Later list as it still peaked my interest.
I came back to the story a few days ago, and have binged the whole thing. And I'm so glad I did.
A lot of the negative points other people made in their reviews are right when the book feels like it's finding its footing, and the author is truly starting to explore the story and setup of the world. I wanted to go over some of those points from my own perspective that may be spoiler-y, and explain my thoughts on them and how I feel now deeper into the story:
There was a comment about how the MC is overly paranoid and how somehow he's "special" for thinking a certain way. While at first the MC may come off as too paranoid for no reason, I think you have to look at the setup of the world and the MC. First, the MC clearly has some sort of mental health issues, whether that be DID or something caused/worsened by his medical implant. He gets stuck in his own head over thinking every little interaction with people and the world around him. Secondly, this MC with these issues wakes up from a coma and his whole life has changed, along with the rest of the world. Government propaganda spouting "you have to level up and do your part!" makes him consider why there's a rush, and to explore this new reality in front of him. This, along with his outdated and neutered skills forces him to think outside the box when it comes to the challenges of this new life.
Perfect example is how the MC is the first to mess around with the mechanics of the challenges and doing some testing with slimes. When the MC is first told about the challenges, he's basically just told "hey go kill these slimes, here's a hammer, get it done asap and level up." 99% of people wouldn't think twice of just going in, getting the quest done, and leaving it at that. If you are new to the genres here on Royal Road this may not be the best first book to pick up, but if you have read a couple dozen then this should be on your follow list!
It has novelty, a good leveling system, a unique and interesting main character. It has broken the monotony that can happen after a couple dozen similar books and hooked me in.
Give it a try, but not as your first ‘system’ book. It is not straight forward enough to be the first, but don’t skip it! - RascozillaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Those in charge of the System want magic sheep, but our MC is not going to follow along, or maybe can’t?
An interesting story! The text is meaty, with an almost visceral texture to it. Less info dumps, with more hidden, but still feeling a little crunchy. I look forward to a published polished version.
Good: The MC feels smart but is not perfect (he’s not a Gary Stu). Some interesting ideas regarding the “why” and “how” of a System. Grammar and structure are good and seem to be to be improving. Interesting “magic” system.
Bad: Nothing bad, just be aware. The story explores heavier topics of loss, self-worth, existential questions, and other ones that may be uncomfortable and/or messy, and may not be clear (I at times feel a little confused).
I Want more! More character development, more world building, more twists! - Sir_CaspianRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm absolutely hooked on the way DMA is writing this. From the wonderful prose describing environment detail and showing emotion to the obviously well thought-out world building, I cannot wait to read more of Thrive: Unseen. I love how active reading and cross-referencing reveals hints and clues about what's happening and drip-feeding of information is done in a way that doesn't feel demeaning and instead promotes reader interaction.phenomenal work. i hope this series continues for a long time.
- The Dreamer.Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Ive been meaning to write a review on this book for a very ling time, as its one of my favirote, most engaging books rigth now.
It s so Unique
Style:
The author utilises a very distinct writing style with Rem. The amalgamation of his logic, passion, and insantiy makes this one of the best stoeies to read on the site. However the half star lost is due to the improvement the structure of the different modes Rem uses to convey his thoughts could use some improvement. Though i understand that diarie entrries are written differently evey time, there is a lack of common structure and syntax that inhibits reading experiences sometimes. The author can make them more uniform without changing the brilliant essence of their writing.
Story:
It has a plot that reminds me of the ocean. Looks vast on the surface, and hides even more underneath. The revelations from the plot are very good, and Rem learning to utilise his powers is juat as brilliant as promised in the synopsis. I am left wishing i had the funds to get extra chapters on patreon ;)
Character:
Rem as a character is quite brilliant, and his character development is very superb. However the lack of hints behind the source and reasoning of his 'duplicity' has afe it mysterious to the point where the audience is grasping for any incling of a delve into his past. I understand its going to come, but i wpuldve appreciated at least a breadcrumb from the author.
Grammar:
No unintentional spelling errors, just the intentional atypical sentence structure which comes as a resilt of the biased firat person perspective of Rem is sometimes hard to track, but doenst impact reader experience. Just a device choice from the author.
All in all a great book! - lanboyoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Author does not hold the reader’s hand. I suspect that that is why there are some bad ratings. We are still learning what happened to the MC to make him into who he is at chapter 50. We got us a slow burn. But I am now more eager for new chapters from this story than I am almost any other story.slow burn, social isolation, weak to strong ( I think ) in an externally triggered system in a future earth, that keeps getting more interesting as the Mci breaks the system. Or uses it properly. We don’t know. Are you kidding me? 200 words? Give me a break here. That is a freaking one page essay. People are going to be posting ChatGPT reviews at this rate.Anyway, alien system, cruel, possibly world ending, mc sees deeper into what is possible with the system, either exploiting it, or using it far more aggressively than anyone else while looking like a slacker.I don’t really LIKE the mc, but I respect him. Remains to be seen whether his attitude is justified. And it seems to be.MY attitude is getting worse every sentence that I write trying to get my word count above 200.
- rwl1256Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Came not expecting much but am pleasantly surprised by the depth, realism and accuracy in the writing. Would recommend to all scifi and prog fans who are bored of the usual flattery tropes!
The protagonist is psychologically very interesting too, can't wait to see how he grows as a person as well (not just how OP he eventually becomes)
Keep going at it writer!! You're great - TruehealthypretzleRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5its like a mad hatters dream and it is hard to follow at first. once you settle into the flow of how it is written it starts to make sense. Good read so far. look forward to how this crazy adventure will go. I am here for it now and hope it continues to make me question my sanity.
- Cabbage1234Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5The first couple of chapters are a bit convoluted with numbers and computer esque code, but once the story gets going the majority of issues are resolved/left as issues which the MC has to overcome.
The premise is an interesting one and the protagonist is a normal person with realistic thoughts and progression (not an OP MC who stumbles into blessing after blessing / powerup after powerup).
The story is detailed and covers minutiae very well, a chapter tends to cover 1-2 days at most.
I feel that the story has the potential to be both broad and deep. Looking forward to seeing how things develop. 4.5/5 so far.
