Description
Sticks and stones may break their bones, but words also will. Sixty years ago, rifts opened and giant magic-blooded bugs descended upon humanity. They were named the ‘Swarm’ for their fierce, insatiable hunger for human flesh—but Zora Fabre is just a language teacher in a hidden castle academy. His only wish is to protect his students from the human-insect wars outside the academy, and preferably? He’ll never come in contact with a single bug. But when the Swarm finds the academy and floods in one night, Zora is forced to accept a system—and a rare magic that turns his words into reality. The catch? He has to believe he can actually manifest his spells even without his magic, and that's not as easy as it sounds. Armed with his new magic, a spell-slinging wand, and his ability to speak every tongue in the world, he must rewire his imagination and defend his students from the invading bugs. If he can’t, they’ll devour everyone standing in their way, and the more voices they steal, the stronger they’ll get. He'll curse them with a thousand spells before he lets that happen. - ZombieManThatchRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Great read so far. Right on par with the other bug-pocalypse stories I've read so far. There is great descriptive details to really help with visualizing what's happening. The main character seems really fun so far. More intelligent than physical with a healthy dose of witty remarks. Very excited to see where this goes!
- mcfadyeniRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Good book with an interesting, unique concept/system.
Not overloaded with stats but still manages to have a way for the characters to improve themselves over time.
My one critique would be that there could be more room for inventive magic inside the existing system—characters seem less creative than they could be within the constraints given. - Level0ScribeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0As a linguist, I am pleased as punch to see one assuming his rightful place as the story's protagonist! This is early days yet, with a mere nine chapters published in the last few days, but oh so promising!
Style: The writing flows rapidly, as a fascinating world is gradually being built up around it. The overlong chunks of world-building that easily plague fantasy are mostly absent.
Grammar: The story is written in third person, though obviously centered on the main character, which can occasionally feel a little unwieldy (but so does the first person att times). The writing is competent, and almost completely free of errors that threaten to pull you out of the flow.
Story: A language teacher at a school that serves as a refuge from a world-encompassing war with giant insects is forced to come to terms with new-found powers as that refuge is suddenly broken, in order to protect his students from the insects. This gives us a believable and engaging goal from the outset − protect the children! − and centers the story in setting familiar to most − school, albeit one rather different from the ones most of us studied at. So far, there is a natural ebb and flow between action and character interaction that looks promising. We most certainly want more ribbing of the self-conscious music teacher between bouts of crushing carapaces and tearing mandibles.
Character: This is where this story really shines, so far. Characters are immensely likeable, yet fairly complex for this early in the story. There is room for more nuances here, certainly, and we have yet to meet more than a couple, but characters that I care about are the only point I will not negotiate on, so this is all well so far. - LordamnesiaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I loved the first book, both as an introduction to your world but also as a standalone, heartwarming story of triumph and loss. The second is gearing up to be just as good! I really love the MC, his magic is one of stories and understanding words which reminds me of the 'A Wizard in Rhyme' book series where magic was cast through poems. Great stuff, just like yours!

This is a general review that I'll keep spoiler free. But stories like 'Thousand Tongue' aren't just a unique take on the LitRPG formula, but filled with some genuinely interesting worldbuilding. When someone in the genre comes along and does something new, that's worth recognizing, especially when its done with skill.
Worldbuilding is the shining star here, and the concept of a shared universe among many stories on RR is, I'm not shy of admitting it, something I personally wish I'd have thought of.
When we've got stories from this author on the #1 RS list, we know the genre's in a good place.
Just read it. - MammonDPRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A new part of the Unmaker Universe, Thousand-Tongued Mage delivers on the quality that Unmaker and its sister series have shown and in some aspects exceeds it. The setting is of a world overrun by monstrous insects who have pushed humanity back to one last continent, threatening the extinction of the human race. The protagonist of this book is a language teacher at a prestigious academy which is invaded by giant insects. He must struggle to survive, protect his students, and find a way to defeat the swarm of giant, powerful insects with his newfound abilities.
Style: Typical of Maradina the story is stylized well, with all aspects of the text feeling purposeful and important to the story making the series lack any of the bloat typical to most webnovels.
Grammar: Next to no grammar mistakes with any that pop up being quickly fixed as soon as they are pointed out.
Story: Maradina has made an incredibly interesting world that properly adheres to its own internal logic. The story's plot takes full advantage of the fascinating blend of progression fantasy and entomology and makes something special out of it.
Character Score: So far the characters seem to be 3 dimensional and are not irritatingly flat and irrational so as to make the main character look better, which in my experience is a common problem in both webnovels and the progression genre as a whole. The characters are interesting and all seem to contribute something unique, making them all feel valuable to the story.
Overall: I completely recommend this series especially if you like the Unmaker universe, progression fantasy, or find insects interesting. - mootcarRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0We meet the mysterious teacher who is said to know every language on the continent and quickly realize he does indeed know a LOT of languages. He and one of his students are in a race against time when suddenly...
Suddenly something happens but you have to read the story! Seriously! Just go read it. It's really good.
Another wonderful start to a story that is sure to keep us guessing, learning about bugs, and captivated til the very end.
Style: quite good. There are always a couple of things that show off the author's unique way of writing, while still being grammatically correct English.
Grammar: No issues found!
Story: Mara does a wonderful job of pulling us in right from the beginning and showing us glimpses of the world while keeping the attention on the main plotline. Not too fast, not too slow. An excellent start to another great story.
Character: It's a touch hard to get a sense of some of the characters as not everyone can speak the same language. MC Zora is a well-rounded character though still unpredictable as of chapter 8. We don't know much of his background, just jump right into the action.
Overall very well written and engaging. You should read it. - TuxinbearRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story has just started but it’s been amazing to see how the host of characters the author has brought to life interact with each other in such an amazing story. The overall concept of how this story’s system was created is something I’m very interested in learning more about. I’m very excited to see how this first arc plays out and where the author takes it from here!
- EshmatarelRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is a very solid story, it starts off a bit before “the action”, but very quickly accelerates. The world building is solid, and the characters are looking fleshed out, although a little one dimensional. It’s still pretty early in the story though, so it’ll probably be a while until we see other aspects to them.
The world building is great - it’s clear the lore, metaphysics, system, and world have all been planned and refined. That may be expected seeing as the author has multiple other stories in the same setting, but it’s worth mention for people who’ve never read the others (like me!)
the tone of the story is pretty harsh though, and that might turn some people off (again, like me). I don’t want a gigachad power fantasy, but 100 pages in it seems very few things go right. When the mc does scrape through a difficult situation having achieved his goal, a new, probably worse, problem emerges.
Perhaps it’s only due to the long action sequence still ongoing, but I’m personally hoping that there will be more upwards trajectories in the future.
With all that said, the story is most definitely worth reading! Even if I personally _might_ drop it in the future because it won’t be to _my_ personal taste, I would be remiss not to rate this very highly and recommend it glowingly, at least at this point in the writing (ch. 10). - Lt Dramatic OctopusRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I'm a teacher and have taught English in a foreign land and Maradina gets it. The feeling that a teacher loves their job and tries to understand their students. So far I'm enjoying it all. Very visual prose style and expertly crafted to read quickly between lessons. I wish I could speak a thousand languages.
