The outside world is nicely important! Mainly because of all the cool future tech, but it plays an important part in the rest of the VR-focused story!
The subtle intrigue plot is cool and funny, along with Bob finding a good way to level, that's not too personalized. Anyone could figure it out and it's easily teachable, it's just that he and anyone else that discovered it, are keeping it to themselves! Tons of secrets are in the game, and Bob just one person of many that have a secret.
But the real core of the story is enjoying the trip around the world, I think, while being basically a kind mercenary, helping out people everywhere he goes. The cultures of the game don't need the players to continue going, they're basically just useful interdmensional mercenaries.
