- Banner CaygeonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a story about a two Pixies who encounter a licensed pirate, privateer, and go on missions and space battles. It's fun. It's well written. It's super enjoyable. It's probably one of the better things on RR.
Grammar: No glaring issues and certainly nothing to detract you from the story. Full marks.
Style Score: This thing is just plain fun. The banter is hilarious, the action is really well described. The science behind it all seems cogent as well. (air locks, dna triggers on blasters etc etc).
Story score: Full marks here too. It's not wholly original but it doesn't matter because it's so well executed. Every episode is it's own thing and you want to read the next one to see what kind of trouble they'll get into next.
Character Score: Full marks here too. Lissa and Yvian are great. Bonus points for making Y a gay character. The banter between sisters feels so natural as well, not always an easy thing to do. The privateer is also really well done and has some nice edges to him. A cowboy of sorts, but with honour.
All in all, this piece is fantastic and you will absolutely enjoy reading it. - RoboticGolemRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This might just be one of the best stories I've read recently, and is definitely going in my favourites.
If I had to compare it with anything, it'd probably be a bit like the death worlders crossed with the expanse, with a healthy dose of Stellaris.
May fortune find you on the cusp of the Crunch - Big HavokRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is an extremely well written story. The characters have depth and are very entertaining. The story itself is engaging and keeps you burning through chapters like there's no tomorrow. There are very few errors in grammar and everything is easy to digest. I'm thoroughly enjoying the read, please keep up the good work.
- FooBarTrixieBellRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Mims is an awesome character, badass and broken, the universe is completely rooted, the people are just a little insane and AI wants to kill everybody. It’s a non stop roller coaster, well written and well worth the read.
I wanted to leave it there but apparently thirty nine words are not enough! Just read it, it’s fun. - HearthenstoneRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I think it's a crime that this series doesn't get the love and exposure that it deserves. It's one of the better written works in this site and provides a fresh of breath air from the regular isekai, lit-rpg. The characters pull you in, their backstories, goals and motivations are capitvating. The writing and worldbuilding is easy to follow. Overall a fantastic experience to read.
- A. StargazerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0In a sector where everyone is either a pirate or a privateer, one man rescues two smoking hot space babes. Together, they go on an epic adventure, face down harrowing odds, and oh yeah, did I mention one of the babes is a lesbian? Follow Madlad Mims as he and his Pixen companions engage in licensed plunder and hot--
Sorry, couldn’t help myself. Reviewing at chapter ten. It’s actually a very well done space opera so far.
So, the real draw to me so far is the characters and their dialogue. The cast so far has been Madlad Mims and two pixen sisters that he rescued from a life of slavery. One of which shows her affection very frequently, while the other one is stubborn and defiant and prideful. The constant bickering and humor is well done.
The author’s style is also excellent. He does combat very well, and there is plenty of action.
The story is episodic in nature, and the few episodes I’ve read so far have been well very well done. I could definitely see this being made into a TV series in the style of Farscape or similar shows.
Gramatically, I saw a few punctuation errors and/or typos, but that was it. Not enough to detract even half a star, imo. - M.G DriverRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0What a thrill of a read! I had to check the time halfway only to realize I've been reading non-stop for a good while.
The action and adventure is all there, right smack in your face from the get go. No slow meandering start, it's right to the action and I love it!
Style:
The witty dialogue and fast paced nature of the battle really takes me for a rollercoaster ride. I find myself imagining I'm right in the cockpit next to the bloodthirsty human, blasting away and programming ships automatically.
I don't have a very clear image of the aliens or the different ships, but that doesn't detract from the style of writing at all in my opinion. It allows the reader to create his own imagery and it works brillantly.
The chapters are slightly shorter than you would expect, but it's a great way to break up a battle into clear discernable chunks.
Story:
I'm a fan of sci-fi, and I'm more towards the worldbuilding part of thing rather than the action and adventure itself. I must say I find a bit off-putting that the MC is a veritable badass (I love it). But what throws me off is the seemingly unexplained way in how the systems work. A few worldbuilding sentences have been dropped here and there, but I never got the full picture of "okay so this is how the economy, travel, jobs" work.
Especially with the amount of money a privateer makes, I'm surprised there's still people who haven't caught onto the job. It should be the most desireable job in the galaxy, especially with quadrillions willing to risk their lives. Maybe it's because I'm not entirely clear on how much pirates make, or how much a Militia member makes, but they seem to take the same amount of risk and I don't see them getting compensated as equally.
However, worldbuilding is definitely not the focus of this story, and is more of a personal peeve of mine. I'm sure further down the chapters it will be explained further, but it does leave me wondering in the first dozen chapters.
Grammar:
Slick and smooth, no major flaws. - ItkovanRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The story is well written, with good grammar and few mistakes though there are perhaps a few scattered about.
With that said, we get a story where humanity have moved out into space and encountered other species.
Xenophobia is running rampant, though from what i've read so far, it's mostly on the human side.
This universe have 3 forms of "nightmare species", where humans are one of them.
They're pirates, sexual deviants and slavers.
As for the other 2 nightmares, imagine the Geth from Mass Effect, but with a desire to wipe all organic life from the universe, or a bio-engineered bi-pedal feline with 4 arms that salivates at the thought of eating the meat of a sentient being and you'd be close to what the humans are listed alongside.
Outside of the other 2 boogie-men, we get a universe where corporations are the leaders of their worlds, or star-systems, which ought to give you an indication on the dystopian life that most species live under.
Lose your homeworld and system, *boom* you're now a second-class "citizen" with little to no legal rights, ready for exploitation, so just "assume the position" and accept your new reality.
The story have so far touched upon many of the issues that you'd imagine would pop up if "corporations ran the world" while at the same time, being someone from outside of the "system".
In fact, with the crew being a human and two Pix, we get to see both from the outside as well as the downtrodden existence of someone from the "inside".
As for the HFY part, it's not as if just any human can effectively be a "space orc", we're kept informed of how "regular" humans are easily slaughtered by some of the alien species, but as soon as a human with training enters the fray, things often turns out nightmarish for most aliens, but we do get to experience how humans can be overpowered or overrun so they are not invincible, just very hard to take down. - Oliver LawsRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Style: The author has a fun sense of humour and is able to use snappy dialogue to inject some good comedy into the story. It did feel like certain descriptions were a bit lacking but for the most part the writing prioritises keeping the story moving. The action scenes are definitely really well done, as is the banter during them.
Story: This is a really interesting universe with numerous species, economy, factions and interactions! Really love how humans are so notorious to other species. Plays on the "Earth is space Australia" trope, which is something I'm happy to see more of as it is a really fun idea to explore. I really love the structure so far, and I'm looking forward to seeing the crew go on more missions and see how things develop.
Grammar: Some sentences do feel a bit stiff, largely due to heavy repetition of certain words, and there is the occasional typo. As it is I think it definitely needs another pass to improve the flow, but there are no major issues that can’t be easily fixed by some proofreading.
Characters: Lissa and Yvian have some great back and forth. Definitely feel like family. Captain Mims is one of my favorite types of sci-fi character, a smart and professional captain with a good sense of humour. Basically, I love all the characters introduced so far and I'm looking forward to meeting more.
Overall: Definitely recommend for any sci-fi fans, especially those who enjoy shows like Firefly! Will be following and reading more, so will update my review accordingly. - dinnertimeRoyal Road★★★ 3.0Only read to chapter 6. I prefer a bit more scifi in my science fiction, this means more world building, we have lots of aliens but zero impact on plot that they are alien, minor references to technology.
At least up to chapter 6, the characters are lurching from one crisis to another with just enough character development to vaguely seem logical. There seems to be strange leaps between chapters which arent very consistent.
I do like how the world is shown to be very harsh and commerical oriented, the setting has so much protential with privateers, the motivations of the characters, but I would have liked less focus on battles and more focus on everything else.
