Description
Zayne knew his life was over the moment the Brand appeared onto his skin. Or at least he thought he did, until he finds an Inheritance slipped from the grasp of an unknowing Chosen, part of the great and powerful Loom that rule the world with their mystical powers, and sees a chance to grab power of his own.
Soon, he finds himself as a flaw in the system, a flaw in existence itself that must fight tooth and nail to keep up and evolve. This could be the one chance he has to break the system; to make something of himself, at the risk of his life, of course.(Progression fantasy inspired by Shadow Slave)

- EdenCRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The Monarch of Flaws
The author delivers a compelling blend of psychological tension, grim worldbuilding, and an antihero-driven narrative with a surprising level of polish. The story begins with strong pacing, immersing us in Zayne’s bleak existence as a Branded outcast. The dry, sardonic humor cuts through the darkness just enough to keep it from becoming too heavy, offering a tone that is both gritty and entertaining.
Zayne’s internal voice is consistently sharp, and his descent into a morally gray survivor feels both believable and painful. The supporting cast adds texture to the narrative. Cenebrous’s naive idealism contrasts beautifully with Zayne’s cynicism, while the Flawed remains calm, unpredictable, and haunting. Even when little is revealed outright, their interactions plant powerful seeds of distrust, paranoia, and unease that pay off later.
As the plot progresses, the pacing intensifies with unsettling body horror and chaotic combat, culminating in the appearance of a strange stone that gifts Zayne with power, but at a cost he does not understand. The world and its systems feel deliberately mysterious, keeping the reader just as off-balance as the protagonist.
One of the standout moments is a gut-wrenching betrayal. Zayne, manipulated by forces he thought he controlled, becomes complicit in a gruesome ritual. The payoff is devastating, but it feels earned and marks a turning point in both the story and Zayne’s arc.
The humor returns in the form of a hilariously underwhelming Virtue reveal, subverting the typical power fantasy trope in a way that feels intentional and fresh. The divine consequences that follow hint at larger implications and give the ending of the arc real weight.
Grammar occasionally falters with repetition and phrasing, but never enough to break immersion.
Dark, thoughtful, and bitterly fun, this story is an underrated gem that deserves more attention. - LubjubRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style - Slow burn gritty fantasy that isn't afraid to take it's time in the build up. There's a really great use of language in the descriptions and creates a strong picture for the story. The MC fits well into that anti-lead archetype and doesn't lean in any particular direction despite trying to survive. Worldbuilding happens through a drip feed style, the cliff hangers are done well here too. One nitpick I have is the magic systems take a little while to get introduced are still a little vague and that may be a turn off for a lot of readers.
Story - Zayne a branded person starts the story off with as an underdog street rat but as the story progresses we learn why that is. It's progression but at the same time there's a strong survival element to the story. He is not an OP protagonist more the opposite actually. It's a bleak and corrupt world filled with many dangers and creatures of varying degrees of threat level. And most of the individuals are as enigmatic as the plot itself. There is a sort hierarchy style system that readers more familiar with manga/manhwa may use that's pretty neat for the creatures in the story. From the trial where he gains a form of power up to the point he is forcibly enrolled into an academy for the elite Zayne really gets the short end of the stick on his journey. All is not what it seems.
Grammar - Really solid effort on the grammar, it's been checked repeatedly one of the better proofread stories I've read.
Character - Zayne is a solid protagonist. It's hard to get the main one right a lot of the time. But he never feels like he's getting into that 'I'm finding it hard to want to stick with one' type. There's going to be some huge character and personal growth for him overtime for sure. Cenobrous was a cool character to add. He really showed the fickleness of the world they live ready to jump ship to Zayne's side just because it would be in his favour to do so. The cast in general are well written and none of them feel like that one - Maddox StanfordRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This story is ambitious. This gritty, dystopian fantasy grips you immediately with its high-stakes action coupled with its deep emotional and societal themes. Zayne’s journey from a branded outcast to a reluctant champion is compelling, and the worldbuilding is vivid. The mystery and moral ambiguity hooks the reader immediately. The pacing is generally strong, though I would have liked the exposition to be fed to the reader in dialogue. The visceral imagery is sometimes overused and can slow momentum. Zayne's personal struggle and cosmic stakes is a highlight, but streamlining some elements could make it even more gripping.
The prose is effective, evocative, and atmospheric, with a knack for visceral details that ground the reader in Zayne’s grim reality and the horror of the Inheritance trial. The mix of internal monologue and environmental descriptions creates a strong sense of place and character. However, the style can occasionally feel a bit overwrought. There's sharp dialogue that fit the characters appropriately, though some conversations feel a bit overly done. Refining the balance between lush description and narrative flow would enhance the style further.
Zayne is an intriguing protagonist. He's not entirely good, nor is he evil. He's a survivor. As a Branded, he stumbles into a life-altering trial within something called an Inheritance, facing a terrifying creature and allies that we sometimes feel he could do without. The plot is rich, weaving personal survival with broader mysteries about Great Houses, the Rift, and the Flawed. The trial’s unnerving fleshy setting and the moral dilemmas Zayne faces are standout elements. Again, the heavy worldbuilding exposition early on can overwhelm, and the resolution feels a bit quick and vague. A clearer buildup to the trial’s climax and more grounding context for the world could strengthen the story.
The grammar is mostly polished, with varied sentence structures that enhance the story’s intensity and flow. Dialog - The Writer MeaRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I was particularly interested in this novel because I loved Shadow Slave. It made me feel special. Because the style of Shadow Slave was really impressive. It is one of the rare novels that I have read more than two thousand chapters.
After reading a little, you realize that there is indeed an inspiration but it definitely came from another mind. The scenes are well designed and the introduction of the world is wonderful. The effort to show how people are afraid of the stigma is admirable. Many people want to get straight to the point. But these kinds of things are necessary for you to connect to the story. Of course, without exaggerating.
To be honest, I was a little confused about some things. Sorry for attributing this to style. I liked the story. I must say it is not incredible. But the setting is nice. The introduction regarding the character is good. It is a novel worth reading. It just seemed like it needed more. There seem to be some grammatical issues and it would have been good to give the reader a little more information at the beginning of the story. It would have been good if the author had taken a look at these as well. - AddictednovelicRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0It might be hard to understand the way the story works but if you really read carefully, it is worth the read. The writer did a very good job at portraying the main character personality, with the blend of the story unique world building. All in all a good read. I hope everyone find it enjoyable as I do.
