Great little short story. In the space of 4 chapters I got to know the two people in the story on a personal level.
I don't look back on the covid period fondly. We aren't designed to live alone and live solitary lives but that is what COVID forced on me, so I relate to her going a little bit bonkers during that period. I used to have really weird dreams during that period, feeling as though someone was sitting in the corner of my room watching me, so when her dreaming mind starts to create this false image of someone entering her room, I think it is totally plausible.
As for the guy on the other side of road, bit of a weird one. At first I thought he might be a peeping-tom, but in the end of chapter 2, and in chapter 3 and 4, we see he is really a good guy. He’s down on his luck but still responds with instinctive kindness. We know that she is no beauty queen by modern Japanese standards, but he is clearly attracted to her, and I’m 100% that he will send her a message the next morning and things will progress well from there. If not, then nothing lost.
One of my favourite short stories this year.
