Hugo’s new lease on life starts out so well. A trip up the mountain grants him the chance to be a mage. But then the train he is on explodes.

Unknown magic flings him back in time, and he avoids the explosion this time. While he is trying to unravel the mystery of this unexpected second chance, life goes on. His new gifts lead him to the magic academy. At the school, he will face off against noble students that don’t want him to be there, teachers that expect him to already know everything, and literal monsters that want to kill him.

Can he forge allies in a place where he's hated? Can he learn to master the magic that the academy demands he know? Can he even survive to discover the secret of his second chance and what it all means?

The world building is really very good, the slice of life plot develops well, and the characters are fairly interesting. On top of that the magic system has some real thought behind it which is rare.
The main plot of the story however is a bit lacking.
Right up until the end it never entierly managed to be a page turning read for me, just a casual novel I picked back up every now and then.
Some of the plot advancement is a bit forced lining up elements that feel like they should be developed later. I hate to say it but more slice of life filler would go a long way to smoothing out the main plot. Life can change suddenly sure, but mostly it is slow and gradual with a thousand obvious compromises, not a all at once.

At chapter 9 I'm loving the novel so far~ it has a good premise and it's quite packed with events.
Style: I like it,  easy to follow and quite enjoyable, the author only gives you what you need when you need it, not drowning you with explanations and info dump.
Story: the story is basically about a teen who's doing his best to improve his life and his struggles to achieve his goal, I'm sure that in a few more chapters we will also see him trying to study and learn about his powers and how to use and control them. The power system seems well made even though we haven't seen a lot about it till now. The same for the world, what has been shown foreshadows quite an alive and big world.
Grammar: it was great, saw no mistakes that could break the immersion and I enjoyed the chapters with no problems, making it a win for me, I personally don't stress much over grammar really.
Character: they are flawed and believable, the mc isn't the perfect human and the relations he has are quite complex and unique, like with his mom and how he reacts to her and how she treats him.
All in all, I'm liking the novel and I recommend it, the author brought us an interesting cast and a fascinating world that I wanna know more about, keep up the good work author and thanks a lot for this novel~~

This is a great book. The character is well thought out and given the complexity of the magic system used the author has clearly thought out this book. The plot has shifts that honestly don't make sense when you first read it but after receiving the following chapters the book completes any minor problems it had offered.
To any reading this before the book itself, the book is great. Read it and enjoy.

The story is clearly plotted out well and deeply thought out, including in execution which is honestly really well done!!!! The character is also well developed and written in parts. Grammar is pretty consistent and decent (really amazing effort on this novel in all aspects!) Overall, a promising plot line and series to continue with!

Loved it up until book 4 when he becomes a female. Couldn't read it after that.
The writing is great and the whole idea behind the story is really good. I just lost interest and immersion when he was reincarnated as a female. If that doesn't bother you, read away

    The story is very good.
The narration is enjoyable, without so much information to make it heavy or boring in the first few chapters. However, the author manages to drop world-shaping facts as the story progresses.
The story begins with a protagonist with dreams and hopes in search of achieving his goals, clashing with reality that sometimes gives one or another unexpected blow and sudden twists.
The protagonist has some flaws and I like that he does, as it feels real or as close to real as possible and gives us to understand that the protagonist has space to improve and grow as a character.
Anyway, I like it and the story has a lot of potential to go far. I also have to point out that the author seems to publish chapters daily, so that's certainly a plus.

Looks like Royal Road is going to have another great story. I love the beginning setup so far. I love an original world building story. Please give more information about the other races. But im sure that will come in time. I can't wait to read more. Thanks for the story.

Very well written by a professional author with a good command of language and editing skills
It's not simply grimdark it's more polished than that. It's not. Think Joe Abercrombie writing game lit.
Not a light heroic romp but heroism is possible. One trusts that the protagonist will overcome the gore splashed origin of his system. Provided, naturally he survives the cliff hanger

Overall: Well put together and engaging.  This is not a new formula, the magic school setting.  Wuxia/Xianxia fans will recognize some elements of story and plot structure, though this is no cultivation novel.  Tried and true, but with an interesting enouh twist to keep this reader entertained.  Not bad, all told.  The LitRPG fans will appreciate the structured progression style and the magic/technology setting is worth a look.
Style: Low crunch LitRPG, like it says on the tin.  The blue boxes are few enough that progression fans will not be overly troubled by their presence, but those looking for constant numbers going up and popups every chapter will notice the lack.  Suitible for YA and up as the story stands at chapter 20.
Story: Hugo starts the tale rather humble with asparations.  Desperate to make something of himself, he makes the punishing journey to Shimmer Mountain to be soulmarked.  The hooks and twists of the plot are well put together and the story flows together well.
Grammar: When you notice the grammar in a story, it is usually a bad thing.  This one had a few slight bobbles along the way, but nothing to completely kick this reader out of the story.  That said, a good story can still be good despite poor grammar if the reader stays interested.  Fortunately, this one does not suffer that fault in the least.
Character: Hugo is an interesting enough character.  A few flaws, room for growth, some virtues and plenty of troubles to occupy him, his story leads the reader on a familiar path of self improvement and rising levels.

A lovely story that fully understands the concept of "Show; Don't Tell". By dropping us mid-trek to the top of Shimmer Mountain, the reader gets a chance to slowly understand just exactly what kind of world they've been dropped in.
The world building is definitely the strong suit of the story, little breadcrumbs being left out for us to follow as we learn about the magic being used, the System at play, and the multitude of races inhabiting the planet.
I heartily recommend this story to anyone who loves Fantasy, great World Building and a focus on an underdog rising above mediocrity.
