- 5needlerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0First time rating a story on royal road. This is one of the few fictions that continues to disabuse me of any patterns and tropes while still leaning into them. The story outlining and layering of plots is phenomenal. I can tell that they’ve done an amazing job setting the story up to be robust in the future. The party dynamics while repetitive are refreshing as the characters develop their interactions between one another. My one critique is that I feel that a few one off side chapters from alternate perspectives could help deepen the legend of Oh
- AdminHolicRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Characters : A fun romp with a colourful cast of characters and a main character that is a whole lot of fun to read as he does all sorts of crazy things. The focus is mainly on William of course, but we do get a clear enough picture of the important party members, each memorable and endearing (baker girls are the best) and dangerous (genius kobold swarm-trapper princess for the win) in their own way. Also, William might be one of the best-written examples of what "natural fighting talent" means with his ability to adapt on the fly. A heedless drive forward and up, a fearlessness of death and pain, and a good head that learns everything it deems important like a sponge make for a fearsome combination... the kind that gives rise to Legends.
Style : The story brings the adventure and the people to life, it is quick and the action has a good fast pace in line with William's personality. Witty banter and fun situations are aplenty and never repetitive. The focus is on epic combat action and dangerous/fun situations. This reads like a comic book or an anime and brings out the hype-feels. Don't go in there expecting sophisticated classic literature. A problem of many tower-climbing novels is the linearity of it, but surprising & unexpected turnabouts are aplenty and make the story very unpredictable.
Story : The tower climbing adventure itself is done in an interesting and refreshing fashion which is hard to explain without spoilers as it only becomes relevant when William gets more info about this funky world he lives in. But many fun revelations await and I'm sure many more are waiting around corners ready to jump at unsuspecting poor William and lucky readers. The litrpg elements somehow mesh well with the world scenery as "just another thing in the way this crazy world works", and we'll just have to read to the end to fully understand why everything is the way it currently is.
Grammar : well written, nothing too special apart from the odd typo every 20 chapters so. I l - AlysaereRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I won't spoil the subtleties that are very well woven into the early chapters, but this is NOT the typical baby-author's-first-litrpg dross you have to trudge through on Rising Stars that are just a collection of tropes with a stale robotic cast.
No isekai, solid character development of multiple complex characters, understandable and relatable moments and growth, and plot lines that keep you thirsting for more without resorting to cheap cliffhangers. Chapters are also delightfully long. As a 20-year veteran reader of RoyalRoad, fanfiction.net, SB/SV/QQ/AOOO and others, this is a fic worth getting in hardcover. Support the author if you have the means to do so, and read this excellent story.
"William Oh and Chuck Norris walked into a bar. Chuck bought the drinks." -Jason - Anki Is My BaeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A beautifully written story where every part is entertaining or interesting from complex world building to small interactions between characters, every little bit has been given a worlds amount of love and attention. I cannot stress enough how much you should read this. If you want to read a book that’ll have you chuckling and on the edge of your seat, this is the book for you.
- DastrientRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0. . . stories I've read on royal road. Looking forward to ordering some paperbacks when they are available, they will sit well next to "He Who Fights". The magic system is very interesting, a lot of fun to theory craft as we see more interesting monsters and the floors progress.
The humor lands well, characters are developing at a nice pace and are all very interesting so far, can't wait to see where it goes. - DraugluirRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm taking a short break from reading this because I had to leave a review. I think this may be the first thing I've read on RR that actually made me laugh out loud (on 2 separate occations), and I have read a lot.
The world building is great, with hints early on that I'm sure will pan out. The characters are fun, and the magic system interesting. This is an amazing established author, who has finished series published.
Read it. It's good. I'm probably going to resub to his patreon when I catch up. 😅 - FelrexRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Macro is my all time favourite author. And now this has become my favourite book series.
I'm too lazy for a proper review so I just going to list all the things this book (and all of macros work) does best:
Unique magic system, deep characters, wit and comedy, science friendly magic, intellectual... ermm everything.
Normally our mc would be part of some incredibly bizzare love triangle by now. Maybe this series it's starting later on.
Thank you Macro, I contine to enjoy your work and hope to do so for many years. - Gr8Dayne01Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love the plot and characters. Writing style is great too. That is not why I write the review though.
I am a huge fan of the general irreverence the MC displays, and the twist on the reputation getting out of hand is great.
William Oh comes across as someone with a very quick mind, high intelligence, and incredibly ignorant about certain things. It is a fantastic book camping the dichotomy of man. You can be more than one thing. I will buy anything this author puts out, even after reading it all here. - IronCipherRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Decent prose, likeable characters, a 'lived-in' world, and creative use of abilities.
Abilities are more important than stats, if I wanted to read number-crunching I'd go to my day job.
Overall, good hook and a great start.
Looking forward to see where this goes.
Plus, William Oh is a great name. - 13 worlds @ kicking the sunRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love how William Oh become the chuck Norris of this fantasy universe
And then there's like Random people making up Stories and jokes about him and what not when he goes into a bar and he's listening to people he's like This is awesome and Just sitting there listening to these legends and He's like I have to feed these rumors Let's mess with these people
