The story has really good pacing for what is presented as a crash course into the supernatural. He doesn’t come off as extraordinarily overpowered, nor do things come easily to him. He has to work and read and really struggle to gain a foothold in this new world that he’s being thrown into. The characters are distinct, and the magic is explained in an interesting way—it’s not just written off casually, but to be something earned. Overall a really fun story and I look forward to where it’s going.

An interesting start to the tale. :D
I've only read the first 20 chapters released so far, but it feels good so far. :D
Good pacing, and some charming rabbits pulled from the hats. :D
Nice balance of logical extensions to our narrative reality, and the reality expressed by the author. :D
I'm looking forward to seeing how the tale wanders... :D

What can you expect from wkrrk but a good read. Keep at it!!. I especially enjoy how you build up the tension, also the psychological impact in the mc.
If you want a high-quality Urban Fantasy with a focus on occult mystery and character growth. It’s less about "grinding levels" and more about the dangerous weight of magic.
Also, as someone who reads lovecraftian stuff on a regular basis, I loved how you used it there.

As someone new to the occult fictional genre, I found our author’s take refreshing compared with a lot of mainstream fantasy, which can either go the route of stereotypical magic until it feels mechanical or bury you in opacity and call it mystery. This balance is rarer than it should be. Kudos to him for making the occult elements feel intimate and dangerous making it feel less about spectacle and theatrical but  more about key motifs of shifting power, subtle decisions and at the foundationally, human emotions.
What struck me at first was how readable it is. The book doesn’t drown you in terminology, exposition and complex backgrounds before you can actually care about the characters. The background protagonist is a modern one that is easily relatable to many (sad as that may be) and his development and understanding of rules of this new world surface through his eyes and ours that really allows the reader to naturally become immersed. You can genuinely emphasize his thoughts , emotions and choices/consequences through the words which ultimately helps us easily learn by moving with the story rather than stopping and going back and forth.
At the same time, the story and lore runs deep. you can sense and appreciate the authors passionate understanding of both the occult , fantasy , and real world cultures and is able to blend them really seamlessly into this new world of practioners. Again, its greatest strength is that the this world doesn’t feel dense or suffocating, but rather the exposition arrives in natural waves with explanations not interrupting momentum, but building it. Each chapter delivers a sense of character growth, not another element of background story.
All in all this was a fantastic first step for me into the world of the occult fantasy genre. I am looking forward to more of the author’s esoteric yet refreshing takes and future works.

One of the best stories out there written by one of the best authors out there. His last work of art Slaveborn Playthrough is one of the most beautiful pieces of fiction I've read in years and it really made me want to get bacl into reading agaik so I'm pretty excited about how he turns this one into a masterpiece. One of the best stories out there, written by one of the best authors I’ve come across in a long time. His last work of art, Slaveborn Playthrough, is honestly one of the most beautiful pieces of fiction I’ve read in years. The way he builds the world, develops the characters, and slowly reveals deeper layers of the story kept me completely invested from beginning to end. It’s the kind of writing that reminds you why you fell in love with reading in the first place.
What impressed me most was the level of detail and emotion woven throughout the narrative. Every scene felt purposeful, and the characters felt real, with struggles and motivations that were easy to connect with. Moments of tension, reflection, and growth were balanced so well that the story never felt rushed or forced. Instead, it unfolded naturally, drawing the reader deeper into the world with every chapter.
Reading it genuinely made me want to get back into reading more regularly again, which is something I hadn’t felt in quite a while. Because of that experience, I’m really excited to see what he does with this next story and how he might turn it into another masterpiece. If it carries even a fraction of the depth, creativity, and emotional impact of his previous work, I’m confident it’s going to be something truly special.

This was a real gem of a find. Excellent for fans of Wildbows Otherverse web serials (Pact or Pale). Albeit with a firecracker pace I associate more with something like the Dresden Files.
The author has a really confident voice, and once we get past the opening events proceed with the kind of pace and clarity I associate more with a published novel than with whats usually available here on RR.
The author has pulled from a really wide range of inspiration to create a wonderfully compelling setting and magic system. Were clearly only seeing the outline of it so far, but what we have is enough to make me really keen to find out more.
Our PoV character is a treat as well. Jain is beaten down and besieged at every turn, but retains enough spiteful confidence and fierce intellect to make me think he has a chance to come out on top regardless.
Really excited to see where this goes.

I nearly skipped this story after the first couple chapters.  Snarky teenage protagonists are not generally my bag.  I'm very glad I didn't.The world building so far is excellent, as well as the build up of tension.  The mistakes the protagonist make, make sense. In a sea if "punch goblin=numbers go up" stories on RR this has been a really nice suprise.

You know, as a guy who grew up with books like Percy Jackson and exorcist manga like Blue Exorcist not to mention Fablehaven, Artemis Fowl, and A comme Association and more recently dived into web novels like Pact or Pale, I have to say, I was mesmerized by The Last Diabolist. Really. In a sea of endless LitRPG, Isekai, and Xianxia (with the occasional superhero or magical girl story thrown in), Urban Fantasy is a genre you rarely see on this site. And honestly That’s such a loss. The author really has a style of their own. Sure, the snarky MC might rub some people the wrong way at first, but the more you read, the more you grow to like him. For me, that’s one of the book’s biggest charms: every character has a distinct voice and real originality. The world-building is wonderful. The more you learn alongside the MC, the more you want to uncover the secrets of this world. Plus, the pacing is spot on.Regarding the grammar, I’m not a native English speaker, but I had no issues following the story, so I’d say it’s more than fine.Look, I might just be a sucker for Urban Fantasy. I don’t know why, but the idea of another world superimposed on our own where the paranormal is real has always appealed to me. All this to say, this story is good. Really good. If it continues like this, it’s definitely going to become one of my favorites on this site

The grammar’s good and mistakes are fixed quickly. The main character is relatable.  it’s early and he’s a little one dimensional, but I enjoy reading from his perspective.  secondary characters are being developed. The magic system is interesting.  nobody is overpowered yet.  not everything is solved by hand waving, but actual thought and effort. So far the plot is engaging but again it’s early.I recommend the story.
