- luda305Royal Road★★★ 2.5It's pretty rough, both around the edges and at the center of the work. A few concerns:
The writing style is peculiar at best. More likely, it's just poor English, both generally and as storytelling, but I'll give the author the benefit of the doubt. Still, there's plenty of moments where I'm left scratching my head because I don't understand a sentence or paragraph. So whether an intentional style choice or just needing an editor, it's something to bear in mind.
The story itself also doesn't seem to be well meshed. A lot of ideas are just thrown together without them impacting on each other. The end result is a lot of plot holes in a very short period of time. It's distracting.
A significant portion of the story is also written with a kind of innocence and naivety. It comes across as more of a children's story than something directed to an older audience. This is particularly true when there's an odd shift in the first several chapters and the Duke's whole guard squad survives when we had thought then dead (it's not 0% to 10%; it's 0% to 100%). Also, it's not at all clear why "adopted daughter" was a needed excuse for the Duke to provide a residence, though this falls a bit into the plot hole issue. Finally, the second wife's villanious chicanery is cartoonish, which makes it hard to take the story seriously.
