The Birth of the New World

Description
In many fantasy stories, it is often revealed about halfway through or close to the end, that the world the story takes place in was actually built upon the remains of an ancient, advanced civilization (Typically Earth or the planet of 'That place that looks like Earth, but definitely isn't Earth and for some reason has humans...) that got whipped out by some magical apocalypse or a pissed off god or something similar. The Old World is dead and soon forgotten, and emerging from the ashes of magical radiation and crumbling cities is a new people with magic, monsters, and your typical fantasy races.
It's a trope that is quite popular in Japanese LN, and I wanted to write a book that explores what is happening during this trope, rather than just alluding to it later. The fall of civilization, the discovery of magic, and the creation of new civilizations that follow the laws of this new world.
In our story, we shall be experiencing this through the eyes of Lain, a twenty-year-old girl that never got to graduate high school because the world up and ended on everyone. Now she is trying to survive in a world that considers humans as prey and the idea of 'humanity' as nothing more than a cute suggestion.
Join Lain on her journey as she tries to live in this new world, survive against threats that consider her to be food, and maybe even loses her own humanity.
This is the birth of a new world.

- FoxBoxRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A very good gem of a story, if you can get past the occasional misspell here and there it is well worth the read! The world, the characters, all feel alive, compelling and well written.
This is an overall fluffy story with some dark stuff sprinkled here and there that only serve to make it more real and leaves you always wanting for more.
Def one of my faves on the website :) - SammieB3436Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Part way through chapter 7 and I’m loving it! I’ll be honest, chapters 1-5 were a little tough for me to get through, I’m not sure if it was because of the writing or just lots of setup for our protagonist, however, once I reached chapter 6 the story and characters have really started to click with me! Having a blast, now that the story seems to have picked up pace.
- SaxifrageRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0With all the chapters already published, we can already appreciate the immense potential of this story. The chapters are long, the world is coherent for the moment and the path taken by the protagonist is really exciting! For me it's 5 stars although I can't judge the grammar as English is not my native language.
- RedPineRoyal Road★★★ 2.5MC fails my not evil test, so I'm dropping.
Overall story quality is good. World building, character voice, and prose get up to a 4. A few grammar errors and awkward sentences every chapter bring things down a bit, maybe 3.5.
Character consistency, contrived plot points, and disrespecting the agency of both the main character and the first companion are what drop this below the minimum level for recommending this story to others.
MC lacks agency. She's a slave to her instincts. A bit of urges or known problems here and there makes for an interesting struggle, but being oblivious to problems is not.
It's the difference between flaws and character growth, and a never ending downward spiral.
She notices feeling bad, and notices mistakes if the consequences are blatant enough, but has no grasp of the root cause: ignoring the agency of others.
As for the first companion..
...well...
Let's keep things family friendly and just say that there was a significant power, maturity, age, and size dynamic that would be incedibly offensive had the races or genders been swapped.
This isn't something small enough for holding an idiot ball to cover up.
---
It would be so easy to fix. Make the original meeting stop at just a hug or something, then after a night of thinking the companion considers joining of their free will, then smut adjacent activities develop over time if that's the direction the author wants to go.
Still weird, but not icky weird, and if the language barrier gets resolved could be outright sweet.
---
There were red flags I ignored before this point, and additional red flags indicating what's coming down the line. Even when she was a human, the MC had a very dim perspective of humans, and now no longer considers herself human.
---
I've tried to be honest and fair enough to not scare off anyone who is fine with this sort of story. The primary purpose of this review is to scare off readers who would not like this story.
