- micahwelfRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is pretty awesome. It is mostly non-stop entertainment, avoiding depressing details. If you have ever found yourself unsure how to start saying something or how to start writing something and found that you had to get started, at least with something mundane before the rest starts to come — that is pretty much what this author's writing style is like. Most chapters are either a new scene or a slightly time shifted re-imagination of the previous chapter's scene. So, the more intense the scene, the more you get filler content like mood and setup details restated. You also get the story working up to what seems to be a climax, only for the author to shift focus and appear to be working up to a climax again.
If you are someone who has no patience for Dragon Ball Z (original) style posturing, you should be prepared to skim or skip a few scenes that stretch out to as much eleven chapters. Beside the battle climax scenes being stretched out, the slice-of-life scenes are a real treat. If you are one of those fans of posturing, impossibly renewed triumph, and cartoonishly immortal main characters, then this will probably become a favorite of yours. (see ending note)
The reason I include India TV in my vague title hint at the style this story is it feels a little like an India-style fantasy. The logic seems like it should be science-fiction with a cyber-dragon, right? Instead, it is practically oppositional to science-fiction, and about as far into fantasy as one can get with the "cyber" aesthetic. There are very few rules governing the natural world in this story and emotion being an energy source is one of them, so that should be a further hint as to what I mean.
Final note: the eleven chapters that I mentioned were the longest stretch of filler content that theoretically could have been concentrated into one or two chapters was 67 to 77. I won't give you any content spoilers, but if you read 67 & 77, or 67, 76 & 77, you can assume most of the in betw - ClockworkDreamRoyal Road★★★ 2.5The story is good, and it's also exactly the type of story that I like, my only problem is that the story reads like it was written with a heavy use of AI and the effects haven't been edited out.
One of the more common signs at least in the early chapters that I've read, was how small details were mixed up, for example the first night she spent in an inn, she separated from her companions before going to the inn, but the next day they were there by the time she was down for breakfast while normally they should have eaten wherever it was they were staying. Even if we were to say they came to see her, then you can't really say anything about the captain of the knights coming there to meat one of them.
Another kind of inconsistency was how she would repeatedly receive the same information and treat it like it's her first time hearing it, which suggests AI use.
And last the guild masters explanation of magic is basically in the same format an AI would answer in. Like a direct copy paste.
In the end my main problem with it is that as of the time of me writing this review there's no AI content warning. - MetafalicaRoyal Road★★ 2.0So yeah, so far, this has been jarring to read. There's a story here, but I struggle to see where. We haven't had anything substantial from the protagonist in a long while. It's all just "X happens, people go , she comes in to save the day".
Which brings me to a point of criticism. We know basically nothing of the alleged protagonist other than who she was. Who is she now? What drives her? What does she want to achieve? We know nothing.
As for her sidekick, he's severely outclassed (and has been since the beginning) and at this point, she's just babysitting him. He's not even comic relief, just smirks and more smirks...
This story stopped being about her long ago. It's now just about her surroundings.
There's clearly ideas here, but nothing to really meld them together in a good way. - Nefarious PapaRoyal Road★★ 2.0This reads more like a rough outline than anything else. It is very much in the tell don’t show style. So much missing backstory and the characters are largely two dimensional. Multiple and jarring POV shifts make it difficult for me to like it. Needs a rewrite in a more active style and significantly more world building.
