Description
Twelve years ago, the sky cracked open and the world ended. But during Earth’s darkest hour, the unlikely estimate of saviors arrived.Legions of magical girls and mechs straight out of fiction descended to answer cries for salvation. The Terrans pushed back the Aberrations, saving Earth from extinction. But the War left it a landscape of slow, crumbling rot.For young Ikazuchi, the "victory" is just a daily struggle of dangerous salvage runs to keep his younger sister fed, and his father’s crew afloat. While the Terrans offer what help they can, Earth is a graveyard of nations as far as he concerned. Ikki is a scavenger by trade, but a scholar and young machinist by heart. To protect his younger sister from a life of "dangerous odd jobs," he fought for a scholarship that would take him to the magitech academies of Terra. He just needed one last score to pay for the move. But on his final job, the ruins struck back. When the job ends with his father and their men hauled away in slave chains, Ikki manages a narrow escape into the desolate ruins. Alone on an abandoned highway, he finds something that shouldn't exist: a briefcase too sleek and too pristine for a dying world.Inside sits a sentient construct more advanced than any magitech he’s ever studied. Something that strangely, addresses him by name. “I’ve been waiting for you… Ikazuchi.” What to expect:- A near-future cyberpunk setting with: Real Robots Mecha. Magitech. Frilly magical girls. Urban fantasy.- A 'weak' but useful protagonist.-The usual horrifying extradimensional monsters associated with RR's Magical Girl subgenre. -Lite LitRPG elements in the form of a tactical HUD and resource management apparatus that serves the plot.

- drake_azathothRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a great story that blends together a lot of popular tropes - magical girls, AI assistants, conspiracy, a fish-out-of-water experience for a kid moving to a new culture, friction between haves and have nots, and family bonds. By and large this story does a fantastic job of balancing things so far with good pacing and an MC who is likable but who still makes mistakes from time to time and who has enough power to make a difference but not enough to always win.
Overall, I think it's a great read. If you like stories with odd takes on magical girls or stories with alternate universes colliding with semi-realistic results - this is definitely worth looking into.
I'm expecting the rewrite to be even better than the original. - MhaiWindRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Since the original publication of Technomancer, Pizza completed the first book of Lux. Through the course of that writing his style and editing skills have improved, and this fresh rewrite clearly demonstrates the experience. If you are a fan of Magical Girls or the oft overlooked companions in their stories, I cannot make a higher recommendation than this -- of one of the best Magical Girl stories on Royal Road.

Few genres fill such a unique space as the archetypal mahou shoujo or magic girl genre. Though the genre has a lengthy history in manga and anime, it was treated as little more than children's media for a lengthy period. With the reinvention into battle magic girl (popularized by shows like Lyrical Nanoha), the mahou shoujo genre found a new life and a wider audience. The genre would take its next step with the subversive deconstruction of Puella Magi Madoka Magica, which would see wide acclaim and a realization that this genre could be used to tell more complex and impactful stories.
Technomancer takes those classic inspirations and combines them with a technological premise, grounding the world in a near future where our Earth is endangered by creatures from beyond our understanding. Called Aberrations, these monsters are simultaneously highly aggressive and highly resistant to mundane weapons. Only the newly discovered powers of magic allow humans to survive the near cataclysmic breach of Aberrations into our world. Along with the Aberrations, an alternative Earth called Terra tears into our world. Finding humans on Earth, the Terrans offer to join and help drive back the apocalypse.
It is just barely enough to save us from extinction.
Born into the ruin-strewn Earth is Ikazuchi, son to the humble but skilled mechanic Zane. Along side his younger sister, he joins the clean-up operations for the devastated Manhattan, recovering the magic-infused cores of destroyed Aberrations. With enough successful recoveries, his family will be able to afford to sen - mchen11Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0"Technomancer: How I Became the Hapless Sidekick of the World's Greatest Magical Girl" is probably one of the most ambitious projects in the magical girl subgenre on Royal Road. It is the parent series from which Magical Girl Harmonia Lux is spun off from.
The protagonist, Ikki, is a very likable but flawed character. He's a bright teenager who had to grow up fast in a post-apocalyptic Earth filled with fun things like cyborg Nazi zombie slavers and extradimensional zombie-plague-spreading monsters popping up out of nowhere from time to time. He can be a bit of a hot-head, and get himself into trouble.
For a guy who's highly analytical, he wears his emotions and his personal value system on his sleeve, causing him to make mistakes as he crosses over into a world full of cutthroat aristocrats and mages. That seems to be a sticking point that has caused other reviewers to drop the series.
I'll admit, the early arcs move slowly, and it requires a lot of setup. At times, I felt like it was dragging, and I noticed that some readers and frequent commenters seemed to have dropped it because of that.
But trust me, if you stick with it, the story picks up significantly from the third arc onward. The author draws a lot of inspiration from Type-MOON, Madoka, and HoYoverse, and it shows. - Snowy DepthsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style
Style is quite solid. The author has a unique style that I can't quite put my finger on, but one that's not often found on RR. The story features quite a few descriptive scenes, which I really appreciate as I suck at imagining things from limited information. The way the story is worded makes it feel a bit tense at times, and if there is anything that I would suggest to the author, it's to relay Ikki's interior monologue a bit more sincerely — in the sense that he should think about more random topics and ideas at times, to lighten the mood at times. Not too much, but maybe one or two lines about it here and there could work. This does seem to be a darker magical girl type story (NOT relative to your usual, dark MG stories, as those are a lot more heavy on dark themes than this), so the atmosphere being heavier makes sense. Still, a bit of a brighter tone at times wouldn't be bad.
Vocabulary is diverse and better than 90% of stories on RR.
Story
So far, so good! I like the plot, which feels like a bit of fresh air in the world of RR, and especially in the genre of MG stories as whole. We're still very early in the story, but things seem to be going quite well.
I've seen the pacing being referred to as "too fast" for this story in particular, but quite frankly this doesn't seem to be the case for me. We're at what, 21 chapters? Obviously shit is going to go down and obviously some parts of the story will be more tense. I do not see an issue.
Too early in the story to say much more here, which is why I am limiting it to a 4 star review on the story. Plot seems interesting, the narrative thread seems to flow smoothly and I do not see any inconsistencies.
Character
I'll make this clear right off the bat — my problem isn't with the way the characters themselves are built (the character building is very solid, if I'm to comment on it), but rather the way they express themselves. They're too honest (I've seen someome mention this before, and I agree) and too well-art - Teryn180Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I have really been enjoying this story, seeing a character who is effectively underpowered compared to those around him get a real chance to shine. The characters all have their distinct features that make them stand out, and no one is perfect, even if some put on a strong mask when fighting the bad guys.
The new edits have fleshed things out and added great new details. And coming back after reading Harmonia Lux has added another fun layer to everything, and adds context to some little details. - DragrathRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Its a fairly good example for the genre with genre staples such as extradimensional/alien foes but with some intriguing variations of its own including to parallel divergent Earth timelines. It is a rewrite but I hadn't read the original so can't compare the two but the story has fit together pretty well given the caveat of "coincidences" playing out with the MC but in a world where the elites have fate manipulation divination magic "coincidences" aren't really coincidences are they?
- N3RAZIMPRA3TORRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This is, I think, one of the best "serious" stories I've read on Royal Road in a hot minute, and one of the two that made me look to make an account (only to realise that I, in fact, already had an account, which I forgot about). I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, but it is well and truly enjoyable, as far from a supposed "guilty pleasure" as I could think.
Of course, and I have no delusions otherwise, my thoughts are biased to mine own tastes, which is why I shall explain further ("In this essay I will...")
To start, let me shortly explain what I meant when I said it was a "serious" story - I do not, of course, mean that it doesn't have comedy (it very much does), or that it takes itself seriously (actually, I feel sometimes when it should it forgets to) (by which I mean there are times when I believe a quick mood change would have suited the story better but it didn't happen, more on that later).
No, what I mean is more simple: this isn't a parody story, it's not a trope mishmash Battle Royale for the heck of it (... Unless it is and it fooled me into thinking otherwise, in which case kudos to you Pizza). It's a solid work with structure, built on the actions and feelings of characters (sometimes, dare I say, too much so). This is like when you went on fanfiction dot net in the era of 2010 and picked up what you expected to be a crackship with a side of lemonade that you'd enjoy for the shenanigans and instead you found yourself 75+ chapters in and the ship is still insane but it also? Makes? Sense? The plot is plotting and it thickened like you made packed mashed potatoes and boiled the water too long but you didn't add more and Wait- What in the Worldbuilding?? <- that, for want of a better way to say it.
Now, potential readers beware, I'm not sure how spoiler free I can keep my breakdown (I shall make an attempt. Keyword: attempt).
STYLE SCORE:
I gave a solid 4/5 here because the author indeed has a very stable style, however it sometimes feels forced, or perhap - zano187Royal Road★★★ 3.0For some reason the Author loves kneecaping the good guys to an extreme degree, for example, good guys are under a strict do not kill people rule, doesn't matter even if they torture, kill, and enslave children, are actively enslaving, along with trying to kill good guys and are actively killing others, lethal force is not allowed.
Then there's guns, welcome to the gun capital of the world in the post apocalypse, where it's outright stated that mundane guns are viable for killing the most common to appear monsters, that all happen to vanish from the good guys or are never even attempted to be used whenever the hostiles are humans outside literally one case of a granny with a walker shooting at slavers
But the part that pissed me off enough to give this review was when the MC
was in a situation fighting with an ally engaged in melee combat against an advanced high speed robot armed with a gun, MC had a rifle that could easily take it out but didn't want to risk shooting his ally since they both were moving so fast, so he decided the only way to win was to charge across 40m of open terrain to tackle the robot with a gun moving so fast he can barely track it for 3 solid seconds to use his ability to disable it. Deciding on that he threw his gun away and the robot immediately pinned his ally and was standing still for several seconds, after witch it took 3 different deus ex machnas to salvage the situation of the robot with a gun standing still in the open from not killing them both. All of which would have been avoided if MC didn't decide to completely disarm himself in the middle of life and death combat for a few more seconds.
