Description

In a society where the Mandate of Heaven is everything, Sparrow was born without one. In a land where the stars determine one's powers and one's allies, Sparrow is powerless and alone. So when this minor, young cavalry officer begins to receive strange messages, as if from nowhere, seemingly baiting him to drastic action, he can't help but disobey a direct order from his father. Thus, Sparrow takes the fate of the entire Land Under Heaven into his own hands… and casts it into chaos. With a strangely dark woman by his side, along with his overpowered but innocent bodyguard, Sparrow must contend with other clans, other warlords, warriors and monsters, assassins and kings, fabled mounts and famous weapons, and focus on the right strategies to rise in the Imperial ranks if he is to earn that ultimate title that stands above them all: a Hero of the Times. What to Expect - A llitRPG with anancient system, integrated into the setting, with mysterious motivations - Characters whose rise in power invariably comes with more and moremoral compromises - Asingle romantic interestwho may or may not turn out to be a villainess - Overpowered allies whose involvement alwayscomes at a cost - A weak-to-strong protagonist who has to think his way aroundmore powerful opponents Longer chapters but infrequent updates. Chipping away at this when I have the time.

Definitely one of the most satisfying reads I've come across on RR. The storyline and unique take of how complex yet simple situations the author creates for MC leave you wandering what you would have done.
Characters are amazingly written, storyline and build up to events is amazingly well done, not dragged nor rushed. The author has somehow found that perfect sweet spot.

The romance of the Three Kingdoms and the era the Chinese novel adapted was a wellspring of several adaptations due to its history and depth. From anime, manga, video games and yes other books.
Tales of the Three Kingdoms is one such adaptation and I have to say the author knew the stories well.
Chronicling the life of a man who finds himself surrounded by powerful people in the midge of a nation falling apart into civil war. In a version of China where magical powers, "Mandates" are common among the warlords and sages of the land. The story presents an interesting look at the legends though a LitRPG lens.
The characters are pretty memorable, with a protagonist stuck in court politics trying to survive in a ruthless world, and a supporting cast that remains true to the historical period, albeit with an occasional few twists here and there. The prose and style are also excellent, helping to flesh out a vivid detail of the setting. As well as some tidbits about the in the author's notes about their thought process and trivia of the source material and the historical period.
Overall you're in for a treat if you are interested in Three Kingdoms media in general.

The writing is enjoyable, especially love the emphasis on the MC's perspective. It definitely has a show not tell direcion when it comes to the story. It is a retelling of the original story with a caveat where the author made some changes to make it more digestable for RoyalRoad audience
Military novels written in English often use the medieval template or the roman template which while interesting can get boring after you've read some in succession. There is barely any effort in tackling ancient china military doctrine. They are a breath of fresh air, especially since the stratagem and battle formations are often different compared to the usual ones.
This story is a good take in trying to bring the charm of ancient chinese warfare to an audience that is unfamiliar with the story. While most know bits and pieces probably from Dysnasty Warriors, there are so much more to explore on the complex strategies and intrique used in those times.
I stopped reading because I am familiar with the original story. While I love Romance of the Three Kingdoms, I wish some of my favourite characters like Guan Yu, Sun Ce and Lu Bu can have a different ending than the original take
Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable read, if you have not been exposed to eastern military novels, give it a go and who knows, someone might finally start writing a fan fiction on the three kingdoms than can rival the source material.

Tales of the Three Kingdoms stands out in the crowded LitRPG space by doing something few stories attempt, let alone succeed at: treating strategy, politics, and logistics with real respect. This isn’t a stat-dump power fantasy or a glorified dungeon crawl disguised as a kingdom sim. It’s a slow-burn, detail-rich narrative where decisions have consequences and intelligence is more powerful than any legendary sword.
Set in a game world clearly influenced by the era of the Three Kingdoms, the story blends historical inspiration with complex game mechanics. The protagonist doesn’t win by brute force or broken builds—he wins through diplomacy, infrastructure, alliances, and timing. The narrative isn’t afraid to show setbacks, political tension, or logistical nightmares, and it’s precisely this realism that makes victories feel earned.
The LitRPG elements are tightly woven into the world: stats and skills evolve meaningfully, and systems like territory control, army morale, and resource management are treated with the same weight as combat. Wars are campaigns, not one-chapter skirmishes. City-building involves actual planning, not just a magic button labeled "upgrade."
While some scenes lean heavily into military and economic detail, the payoff is a story that rewards readers who pay attention. Characters develop slowly but steadily, and the shifting alliances and rivalries keep the political landscape dynamic and engaging.
For readers who enjoy strategy over spectacle and prefer the thrill of building a legacy over farming XP, Tales of the Three Kingdoms is a rare and rewarding find.

Tales of Three Kingdoms is a well written and fully realized retelling of an ancient story, and the author manages to make it feel relevant and important today.
This is a supernatural world of magic and war and battle and strategy, but it’s also the very personal journey of Sparrow, an underdog MC that we’re rooting for right off the bat. Who doesn’t love an underpowered and underestimated protagonist who has to fight and scrape for whatever he gains?
If you like that kind of story, this one is for you. Also, it is full of political intrigue and negotiating, right in the midst of grand, sweeping battles scenes that have a cinematic flair.
    Highly recommended!

A great perspective on the Three Kingdoms story with interesting concepts such as mandates and missions.
The story is well-written with a good pace and never feels boring. I also like the premise and distinct characterization of each character. I can say the author did a very good job.

This fiction really shines in how it builds its world and handles political drama, mixing martial arts, court life, and family issues seamlessly. The setting feels alive and authentic, with characters navigating a complex landscape of power struggles, loyalty tests, and betrayals.
The writing style pulls you in without overwhelming you, balancing exciting action with quieter moments that build tension naturally. The dialogue rings true, and the story moves at a pace that keeps you engaged without rushing important developments.
Sparrow stands out as a character who's both relatable and deeply flawed, driven by ambition but complicated by his relationships. His interactions with his father and uncle add emotional weight and complexity. The Marshal brings an intriguing layer to the story through unexpected acts of mercy that challenge our understanding of the political landscape.
What makes this story work is how the personal and political remain connected throughout - every political move has personal consequences, creating stakes that feel genuinely high. The cultural elements aren't just decoration but actively shape how characters think and make decisions. The action sequences are clear and impactful, serving the larger narrative rather than just providing spectacle.
Overall, this story delivers on all fronts - engaging action, meaningful character development, and a plot with enough twists to keep you guessing. It's a reading experience that stays with you after the final page, leaving you thinking about both the characters and the world they inhabit.

Tales of Three Kingdoms is a rich, well-crafted story that stands out for its poetic opening, strong worldbuilding, and immersive writing style. The author breathes new life into familiar tropes by creating a world where personal struggle, political intrigue, and supernatural elements blend seamlessly.
The main character, Sparrow, is an underdog whose journey feels authentic and emotionally charged, driven by personal ambition and complicated family dynamics. Readers appreciated the distinct voices of each character, the natural pacing of the plot, and the balance between action, political drama, and quieter emotional moments.
Chapters are thoughtfully titled, adding a unique, almost classical feel to the narrative. The storytelling is cinematic, with vivid descriptions that make scenes easy to visualize without overwhelming the reader. Importantly, the story ties political moves directly to personal consequences, maintaining high emotional stakes throughout.
Whether you're drawn to tales of strategic battles, court intrigue, or personal growth against the odds, Tales of Three Kingdoms offers an engaging and memorable reading experience.
Highly recommended for readers who enjoy character-driven epics with a strong emotional core and thoughtful worldbuilding.

I loved the authors take on the characters and the MC (Sparrow) draws inspiration from the historical drama, yet has a unique view the author delivers us through his vision.
Overall a great read, looking forward to book 2 and keep writing, the book definitely deserves more reads.
