- AlexanderGRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This turned out to be a great story in a rich world, but it was initially frustrating because the MC is not the typical isekai protagonist. It takes her until a little past chapter 20 to finally commit to getting stronger and accept her circumstances.
So, just be mindful of that. - Bill BelyeaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Educational
This story has been a challenging read for me—at times genuinely grueling page by page. And yet, that difficulty has also been strangely educational. It has helped me better understand a certain kind of mindset: the type of person who struggles with resource management, self-preservation, and basic decision-making, even when the stakes are high. In that sense, the book does offer something unique.
However, the protagonist’s choices are often so counterproductive that it becomes extremely difficult to relate to them. Instead of growing steadily in safe, low-level areas, they repeatedly wander into higher-danger zones while unprepared, only to complain about the predictable consequences. It isn’t the “non-overpowered MC” described in the synopsis—it’s a character who actively avoids even becoming competent. They’re given countless opportunities to improve and consistently choose the path that guarantees mediocrity, frustration, and preventable setbacks.
For readers who think tactically or who value survival-minded behavior, this can be painful. Many decisions the protagonist makes feel so shortsighted that even my childhood self would have questioned them. That said, I’ve met real people in real emergencies—storm responses, rescue situations, etc.—who behave exactly like this character: doing the bare minimum to survive, unable or unwilling to plan ahead, and sometimes becoming liabilities to those who try to help them. In that sense, the way the protagonist behaves may be more realistic than most portal fantasies, even if that realism isn’t always enjoyable.
Because of this, I’m pushing myself to finish the book. Not because the journey is smooth, but because there is value in trying to understand a character—and a mindset—that fundamentally clashes with my own. Some readers may find the protagonist relatable; others will find them infuriating. Personally, I fall solidly into the second category, but I can appreciate the attempt to portray a different kin - JaricvennRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Well written, good blend of description, action and emotions giving interesting characters, great world building and a well paced story. The protagonist is likeable, real and a blast.
The system is a unique blend of troupes with a fun twist. The magic is great and doesn't overpower the story
Most isekai tales have an ordinary person suddenly change their personality to justify their actions and there is a truth that power corrupts, but if you don't have a blatant cheat and you are trying to hold on to your humanity while afraid of dying in a Trial trying its best to kill you at every turn - you get a beleivable protagonist that struggles, stumbles. fears, crys and fights to live and hold to her ideals. - remdaleRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Feels professional. I've found it to be very enjoyable so far. The author clearly puts a lot of thought and even research into their story, and writes well. Dialogue is natural and characters are mostly believable and likable. My only criticism is that in my opinion characters can be a bit on the slow or stubborn side when the author is trying to make a point about the world. The mc has many dilemmas with the circumstances she finds herself in, but when push comes to shove she acts and acts well. Like most people she isn't filled with burning ambition and is pretty passive, but she has a strong will and beliefs. She has humility and a big heart and didn't come already forged in fire, but from the beginning she steps up to the plate every time and puts her doubts and fears in a box until the crisis passes.
- yagathaiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Truly solid from start to finish. The plot is gripping in the parts that should grip and flowing in the parts that should flow, and if it is a bit predictable, it's predictable in the way that old boots are comfortable. Good character work, too. Some of the supporting cast are a bit thin, but the MC and her deuteragonist(s) aren't, and that's what counts.
The pacing is a bit strained in a couple of spots for a novel, but that's to be expected when working in a serial format.
One tiny nitpick: the scale of the dragons is super unclear to me. The way the dragon fight scene plays out, I can't tell if they're like house sized or truck sized or horse sized or like tall person sized. - tiger112003Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5Very readable writing style with no noticable grammar or spelling mistakes, and an interesting setting and system.
Interesting MC that has a good amount of struggle and work to level up. Hard to review the overall story at just chapter 20, but felt this needed a real review due to the quality of the writing. - JanxiusRoyal Road★★★ 3.0I'm not an experienced reviewer so bare with me. There are some aspects of this story i really enjoy, the setup, the unique dungeon creatures, Salos, but there are few things that fall flat for me. Firstly, I get that our MC does not want to be there, and I appreciate that, but it's repeated over and over, to the point I find myself saying, "Yes, we get it, now please stop." Another thing I was unsatisfied with was, I get that she's the MC and all, but despite this book being advertised as a soft MC in a hard world, it feels like the the stubbornness of our MC someone cancels out all of that? For example, this is a slight spoiler, but Cass fights someone at least three times stronger than her, but suddenly she figures out a way to bend her power to burn health to give her more stamina? If feels like insane plot armor at times. I don't want to be overly negative, so I'll just say one more thing, but Cass regularly ignores the advice and concerns of others, to do her own thing, and she gets away with it almost 90% of the time. She is naive, and overtly loyal, to a fault. Sometimes, It feels like I have to dredge through mud to reach the good parts of the story, which has made for an interesting reading experience. Despite all the negatives, I really enjoy the characters like Alex, and the world building, leaving enough for us to be curious about but not too little to leave us completely in the dark. In fact, I think a good rewrite might really make this novel something.
- MerrypessimistRoyal Road★★★ 3.0Main character is unlikable, and the pacing is downright glacial. Six chapters in and there has been the isekai itself, one monster encounter, and the protagonist looking at her Stat sheets. The grammar and spelling are perfectly serviceable with no egregious errors as of where I stopped.
I'm sure the story gets better later on, but with slightly less than a sixth of the book (at time of writing 6/32) having precisely two notable events and a ton of navel gazing I can't bring myself to wade any deeper. Try it if your patience is higher than mine. - darkestnightRoyal Road★★★ 2.5The story, system and magic has been good so far.
The problem lies by the protagonist who is completely passive, she always acts like she doesn't have to become stronger and starts to whines whenever she has to fight.
I don't care how someone ordinary acts when they get isekaied, I want somebody as mc who is not frightened by their own shadow. - WindDrifterRoyal Road★★ 1.5I don’t really know where to go with this novel. Grammar is good and because of the style it is enjoyable to read. Story itself is so interesting and in any other case I would have been thrilled to have come across this kind of novel. And if you have read other reviews, then it is obvious there is one big glaring problem in this story.
Yup, it’s the main character. I don’t know if the author was trying to make the protagonist unlikable at first and then slowly build them up but something went wrong. There is unlikable and then there is whatever this turned into, a braindead whiny character that is only alive because of overwhelming amount of plot armor. The amount of complaining (mostly whining) the mc does in middle of action, where she is trying to survive is off the charts. She doesn’t want to kill, oh she doesn’t want to kill the things trying to kill her when she’s not even competent enough to survive against in the first place, truly putting the cart before the horse. It’s like the author tried to deliberately make their protagonist hated. And judging from the cover, the MC is really fat, not chubby, but full on unhealthy amount of fat. What is even going on?
Because of the interesting story and worldbuilding, I really want to continue reading but the protagonist’s decisions and actions grate on the nerves too much.
