Description
"Dear Miss Summers,
Thank you for your application to the Littleroot Young Champions' Initiative. Eager new trainers like yourself are what make the future of Hoenn bright! Regrettably, our supply of starter Pokémon is limited, and so only a handful of applicants can be selected for this program. Your scores do not qualify you to receive one of the three…"
A dull ringing rose in her ears. She scanned and re-scanned the last sentence, as though staring at it would make it change, but it still said the same thing: "Your scores do not qualify you to receive one of the three starter Pokémon."
Well, there it was, the answer spelled out in black and white. She wasn't good enough, and that was that.
Hayley Summers is determined to become a champion. She didn't count on getting a rebellious fire hazard as a starter Pokémon, the class weirdo as a training partner, or a pair of ecoterrorists as her personal adversaries, but—what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right? And in the world of training, that's starting to look very literal.
What to expect:
- Original trainer journeyfic set in the Hoenn region post-ORAS
- Gradual progression with a focus on overcoming setbacks and hurdles
- A coming of age story about young teens learning how to become adults
- Thorny relationships between characters with deep-seated flaws
- Despite the story title, Hayley is not a fire-type specialist. Her team does, however, have a theme that will gradually cohere over the course of the fic.

- CasmiiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Spitfire’s a lovely story with a lot of skill and effort put into it, and it shows. From the worldbuilding, to the cast of characters, and the overarching story, it’s a story of kids having to grow up too fast in a world that isn’t as kind as it seems, and it’s easily one of my favorite Pokémon fics. It’s a journey fic where I find myself genuinely rooting for most of the main (and some side) characters with the knowledge that yes, they can and will lose and find setbacks as well as moments of despair that stick, and but there’s moments of vulnerability and complexity from them that just make the characters feel so real.
I’ve heard from others the first 18 chapters are a struggle to get through, and while they may seem like a very long, very dark tunnel, there’s light at the end of it and a promise of a true bond between trainer and Pokémon. The MC’s not a perfect trainer by any means, but that’s the point. She’s a kid, trying her best while learning and growing from these experiences, and despite the challenges that come her way she’s not giving up.
Edit: Just in case this wasn’t obvious, I was caught up on other sites prior to posting the review. - DermiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Really great pokemon fanfic story. Unique characters and an engaging story so far. Im really enjoying the pokemon being so fleshed out and having their own personalities and aspirations I have read upto chapter 46 on other sites and can say the story gets better and better as it goes on. Hoping to see the author continue this on for a long time.
- ObsidianOliveRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I recently took the time to read through this story in its entirety to its current point, and I have to say: it was a fantastic time. There's something about the realness of this story that I find extremely compelling, though I'll get into specifics more in my category breakdowns. All in all, TDLR: Give this story a shot, I really enjoyed it.
Style: The style of this story is is pretty straightforward, with a 3rd-person take on a Pokemon trainer following their linear journey, though I have very much enjoyed the interludes that have stepped more toward the world events happening. The most recent interlude (Chapter 43) was probably the most unique and hard hitting, though I'll avoid spoilers here.
Story: The story is where it's at in this fic. The depictions of Y-Ko's take on the trainer and coordinator world are entrancing and wonderfully uncomfortable, and watching the cast navigate those uncomfortable realities is fantastic. If you're looking for a plot that takes into account just hownhellish being a trainer can be, this one's it.
Grammar: Admittedly, I am not a master of grammar and feel lacking in my ability to judge this. If I had to say, though, I would mention that I never saw any major spelling or sentence structure errors throughout my read, and that's good enough for me.
Character: One of the hallmarks of a good PokeFic is the diversity and strength of the personalities of the Pokemon themselves. Y-ko has that in spades here. Outside of the starter (whose personality is the hook for the story), the author had introduced several super unique and fun Pokemon characters, including members of the MC's team, but also among the side characters.
Overall, I really like this fic and will be following it as long as chapters keep coming out. - Ramdom57Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm not sure I've read another Pokemon fanfic with such deep character work with characters who are early teens just starting on their journeys. Even minor characters are growing/changing in realistic ways. Additionally, the MC is very believably evolving into a smart capable trainer. The way contests/coordinators are depicted here is also ringing very true. Great work all around.
- junkbearRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0tl;dr: All characters (including pokemon) and their relationships are incredibly well done and well developed. Story has a great underdogs rising vibe and seems like it's gonna go hard in the future.
I already love this story. I especially love the characters, but I also love the style, the world building, and everything else. And the best part is, the best part hasn't arrived yet. The story so far is clearly setting things up for the future. It's cooking, and I smell greatness. When I think about the future of this story, I get chills- I'm talking "row row fight the power" kind of chills. This story is going to go hard, and I am so there for it.
Ok, now that I've vented that hype, let's talk about exactly what the story did so well- the characters. The main characters, their development, the relationships between them, and the development of those relationships are all incredibly well done. And importantly, this includes the pokemon- MC and her pokemon are a party of characters with their own goals that are working together for the sake of those goals. The story is driven by and happening to the party. And all of it gives such a fantastic underdogs rising vibe that gets me so damn pumped for the future.
Spoilers ahead, no specific events just broad-strokes stuff - regikRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It's not often you find a story here where characters (and not just the main one) actually have to struggle and fail, especially the latter part. The characters have been well balanced for the most part and I've greatly enjoyed reading the story so far. The story also does a fantastic job of managing the fairly wide range of supporting characters (which this genre typically struggles with) and makes their wins something that you want to cheer for as well.
I'm going to echo what another reviewer said: the first few chapters aren't as fun to read because of what I've previously said (not because the writing is poor), but the payoff is worth it. - vultchedRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0With all the fictions I’ve read on RR, the same thing gets to me every time- the lack of a realistic set of emotions that the characters experience. Granted, many of the Pokéfics do this better than LitRPGs, but honestly? This fic is a work of art. It’s about an ordinary girl, on an ordinary journey, facing ordinary problems, but done in such a way that the story is absolutely mesmerizing. I find myself rooting for the assortment of characters, relating to their flaws and finding joy in their victories. Please give this story a try- it’s written better than the original franchise.
