- Dr Duke DoomRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I read the first few chapters and all I can say is that I am loving it so far! The story is about how a girl's entire family and friends get murdered, and she ends up getting rebirthed as a Demon. The author has put in a great deal of effort here, and I can't wait to see what happens next! (The worldbuilding is amazing. I hope to get to know more of the characters and the "Lost Era" in the future)
- ZweyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm usually too lazy to review, but I really didn't get the rating so here I am. I like it when professional reviewers use the scale they prefer correctly (with the middle of the scale being just average), but I guess I'll have to make do with what is customary on this site: a scale from 1 to 5, where 5 is everything between decent and amazing and 4 is everything between decent and utter trash.
Let's start with the few negatives that come to mind off the top of my head. The author gives me the feeling of someone who hasn't written lots yet (at least on RR this seems to be the first novel) sometimes. It is by no means a strong feeling or one I have often, but sometimes certain things are written a bit awkwardly or feel somewhat off (especially dialogue) and the pacing can be a little strange at times. In the end though these problems should be easily cured by experience and even now they appear rather infrequently.
Now let's talk about the (more subjective) positives. I like fantasy and protagonists that become part or wholly inhuman, so this manages to check two personal boxes already. I also really like how much time is spent exploring the feelings and anxieties caused by first having to deal with being in the wrong kind of human body and later in a body with the right gender but a new set of arms and a tail. The world feels interesting and even though most of the novel up until now has been spent traveling, it still feels like there are lots of places and countries to visit. The author even manages to make the fights interesting, something that many others don't manage with a protagonist that borders on OP.
This novel explores interesting personal and interpersonal themes, has likeable characters (though I find Taava annoying as she reminds me of my sister), a world full of different cultures and peoples and just the right amount of action from time to time. It may not be a masterwork but is great and I am always happy to see a new chapter appear. It definitely de - miriam666Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Sovereign of Wrath is a well written and heartfelt transgender lesbian romance and longform high fantasy adventure political thriller, i suppose? the characterization is always very fun and deeply reflective of the inescapable othering that we as trans people face in the real world, albeit with a charming and well intentioned veneer of fantasy racism. i am white and do not feel qualified to deeply dissect fantasy racism as a trope or its specific use here, but as best i can tell the author, Maxine, writes it attentively and with an eye to how fantasy racism falls short.
The characters are well fleshed out and headstrong in their desires.
The grammar is quite good, in the entire run so far i have barely noticed any grammatical errors and i am attentive to them.
The story meanders but in the way a multiple book epic saga does, mindful of overarching plotlines and themes.
Maxine has excellent style, both as a writer and in terms of character aesthetics; the writing evokes vivid imagery and utilizes episodic writing's format and the medium here effectively.
I enjoy every charming twist in Zarenna's journey and continue to eagerly look forward to every update. Well worth giving a try, especially for queer readers - rotting gods, as if this site isn't hostile enough to us to want a break from it. - HiIamSilverRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A well written and engaging narrative full of lovely characters and really deplorablevillains (as well as some pretty high stakes, trauma, and sadness when it wants to).
I quickly became invested in the fates of these darlings and want to see where their adventures take them.
The story explores dysphoria through the lens of fantasy and while a bunch of anachronistic details sneak in every now and then (underwire bras, lack of pockets in women's clothing, and uncomfortable corsets are all inventions of the last century, for example) the body transformation and magical prejudice function very well as simultaneous wish fulfillment and an easily digestible and relatable understanding. - MartialBlacksmithRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Four. Four days it took me to read all 190 chapters, in part is because I'm a maniac, the other part is because this story is just that good.
Gramatically is nearly perfect, very few errors that are honestly difficult to see, the narrative is easy to understand and the story flows well.
The only problem I have is not really a problem, the great quantity of characters makes remembering every single one a little hard, but is bearable and fills the history with life.
Basically, is a history that delivers and very enjoyable to read, I'm foaming at the mouth for more. - Olivia Astoria-LivTheTransLifeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I can hardly believe this story doesn’t have more views. It’s fantastic. From the smooth combat, the exploratory world building, and phenomenal characterization.
Fight scenes, while not the primary focus of the story, are engaging and useful to the storyline. We aren’t overly burdened by pages of complicated battles, instead we get combat that’s smooth and rewarding while showing growth and challenge to the characters.
The world Itself is a work of art, throughout the storyline thus far, we’ve personally born witness to at least three major civilizations. In addition, we’ve learned aspects of several others. Each culture has their own food-stuffs, rituals, and expectations that provide a rich world to explore while making each section of the story feel fundamentally different yet connected.
The characters are simply incredibly well done, from the random farmer boy to the various main and guest characters. We shown a variety of developed and growing personalities that stay consistent in their personification. Each person has their own past, mindsets, and goals. The author does a fantastic job of being each character to life in a way that doesn’t come off as expository and allows the reader to really identify with the characters.
I have personally favorited and followed this story and am excited to see where it goes in book three. I hope others will take a look so that they too can enjoy this work. In my opinion, it easily passes those on the best ongoing lists. - Slifer274Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Not generally a huge fan of reincarnation novels, but this one has its own unique twist on it. Zarenna, a trans woman, gains a very nice demon body after her world gets blown apart. From the first 5 chapters, I can see that this is definitely up my alley. Has good representation of LGBTQ+ folks, and the characters are all a treat to read.
Has some style issues, and the pacing is really fast to start with, but the amount of based that the fiction has otherwise makes up for it. - WhiteCr0wRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I adore this story. The writer's style is strong, the voices she gives her characters are realistic, and she writes great action and fight scenes. The magic in the world is magical, believable yet a little bit mysterious. The main character is relatable, even though she is a demon. I don't want to give any spoilers here, save that I personally relate a lot to the main character. Overall 11/10. Downsides? The author always gets chapters out in plenty of time, they are always well written, and she always has a plan for her characters and the plot. So... Erm, no real downsides there. The geography of the fantasy world is a bit confusing at first because it is set on the southern half of a planet so northwards heads towards the warmer equator and south means heading toward the pole and so getting colder. That tripped me up at first, but I quickly got used to it. I care about each of the characters, so they are obviously well written. Grammer is good, a few words here and there are wrong, maybe 1 in 10000 so that's still a 10/10 in my book. Story is simple but evolving in layers, she finds a good balance between complexity and the value of ease. Stylistically the writing is fast paced and written at just above a YA level, quick to read and not overly dense or purple in prose but not too simplistic either.
- ErdosRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is a personal story- a trans-author writing a trans-protagonist. As such we get the delightful experience of a nuanced protagonist. The story as of yet is not at the height of complexity but has great promise!
The overarching narrative is one of wrath, explicit in the title- moreso implicit in the text itself. Central to the protagonist, especially in the early chapters, is life as a new woman/demon, which, as a theme, is much more visible.
The protagonist's character and her outlook on the world are the reason you'll be reading this one. The author, clearly inserting some of their own experiences, writes a believable emotional journey that remains fun to read. (1)
The plot is structured a bit like DnD story-arcs would be, which is fine but didn't amaze me. Mostly because a structure like that has a hard time with overarching narrative and themes. Like this, instead of a fluid story, it becomes a set of locations that the characters travel through and interact with. (2)
If you want to see this novel at its peak, all you need to do is check out the first chapter. It manages the introduction of a phenomenal protagonist with all her fragilities and recent realizations without losing focus of the little adventure she is on.
Blended into that are enough details for the reader to know roughly what kind of world they find themselves in. Swords and magic- church and demons- nobility and politics. All of them, as well as their relationships, find themselves mentioned. (3)
The chapters 3-6.5 might seem a little slow after a start like that, but the story picks itself up again soon enough.

There is a good amount of self-insertion happening here probably, which is kind of cute to see. Cute in how honest with her desire to be herself, unashamed, she is.
Most of the stuff published around here simply cheat their way around the idea of overarching themes by introducing “progression” of some kind and have that be their central narrative. Kudos to the author for not - SilentSapphicRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Or, Zarenna and her Band of Misfits Take Over the World
At least that's what I'm hoping for. I've yet to meet a single character in this story that I don't want to see more of, villain and hero alike. Every interaction is a delight to read and I'm constantly left grasping for more even if the chapter doesn't end in a cliff. Plus, queer themes? Yes please! I need more inhuman lesbians living their true selves, inject that sh*t directly into my veins.
