- BearheartRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Shiari and the Magic Academy is a well-written and entertaining story about a girl doing her best to remain free in a world where society wants to rob her of her self-determination. The premise--a girl goes undercover in an all-male school--could easily take a light-hearted route with lots of zany humor, but this story is more high-stakes moments than hijinks (in spite of the once-phoenix now chicken). There is still humor, but it doesn't come from anyone breaking character or occur at the expense of the setting.
The story is also well-written. It is told mostly from the first-person view of the female lead and has plenty of similes and metaphors that match the mood, which helps the world feel real and weighty. The author has been revealing the setting at a satisfying pace without any jarring infodumps.
