Rise of Tyrus

Description
As a result of his Beastfolk heritage, Tyrus had taken refuge in the middle of a forest, far from others. Should he desire to explore a densely populated settlement, he would have to conceal his ears lest he attract the disdainful gazes of others. After being discovered and almost captured by a few men, an individual known as Wanderer intervened and saved him. Thanks to the aid and counsel provided by Wanderer, Tyrus was able to unleash the power of mana that had been dormant within and gained the status of a sorcerer. With the newfound power, he had pledged to improve his strength to guarantee a secure and lavish future for himself. Sleeping on hardwood or wearing the same tattered clothes was out of the question for him. It was up to him to carve his own fate.

- M.H. KadifichiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The series has already starting off as a thrilling read that's ensnared my interest. Whilst the story starts off as a slow burn my interest is piqued.
The series does a great job of painting a vivid image of a dangerous magical world, where surviving on the street is a struggle.
Style: The author excels at descriptive writing. The enviroment is immersive and well detailed. The prose flows well with great transitioning between action-packed chase sequences to tense, drawn-out suspense. The words utilised are firring and establish the setting of the world that has been created.
Story: The story pulls you into a thrilling chase through an unforgiving world, a tale of a boy pushed to the edge and a mysterious savior. It offers a unique blend of intrigue, suspense, packed with action and filled with vivid imagery. The magical elements are well-incorporated, making the world feel more alive and dangerous. The story is gripping and unfolds at a rapid pace, leaving the reader eager for more. Keen to see more world building but I'm sure this will happen in further chapters as I read on.
Grammar: The grammar is great, nothing that detract from the read whatsoever. I like to think I'm relatively good at picking these up, so really well done by the author.
Characters: Tyrus, the protagonist, is portrayed as a resourceful, courageous, and resilient boy, even in the face of danger. Despite his predicament, he never loses his determination, creating an engaging character to root for. I love a coming of age tale, so I might be slightly biased, but I can already see what drives the MC.
The Wanderer is quite mysterious and adds an extra layer of intrigue to the story, making this entrancing.
In summary, this is a compelling and richly detailed piece of writing that keeps you wanting to read more. - StarswornAdminRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Fans of progression fantasy and well-designed magic systems won't want to miss The Rise of Tyrus!
Style - The story is written very well. The sentence structure is easy to follow, dialogue flows naturally, and I've been very impressed with the way the author describes the magic system. As Tyrus continues to develop his skills, the system stays consistent, and we the readers get a nice glimpse into the expansion of the system as Tyrus goes through it. I also like that the exposition is balanced well with action, and explanation of Tyrus working his way through the learning. It's well done!
Story - The story is good! Plenty of action, a likeable main character, and the foundation for what I expect will be a long-running story. While there's still a lot to be uncovered, I think it's a very pleasant read so far, and I'm excited to see what comes next!
Grammar - It looks like the author has done a pretty good job with edits, revision, and formatting. A couple small items here and there but nothing that detracted from my experience.
Character - I like Tyrus, and I think his development will be a lot of fun to watch. The introduction of other characters to serve in mentor capacities has been good, though I'll say that I'm excited to see the world expand just a bit more.
Overall, this is a great start to a classic progression fantasy done right. The author has clearly put in a lot of time and energy into this story, and I think it's only going to get better from here. - FirstNexusRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0As the title says, this is just the start. The story is so far 70 pages in and it seems to be more a slow burn but the world building the character building and the magic system within the story are very interesting and all have a ton of potential. I will definitely be following to see where the story goes
Style: It's written in a more fantasy style. There is no isekai or anything like that and the style reflects that, doing very good to help the reader learn more about the MC as a resident of this world. I am a huge fan of the writing so far
Story: The story so far seems to be one that will be more of a slow burn. However unlike many other stories like that that are boring and take some time and patience, the author does very well intertwining scenes of combat and thrill with other scenes of magic exploration and usage. It draws the reader in from the very beginning with a chapter full of action, questions and a great introduction to the world.
Grammar: There is really nothing that I caught grammar wise and I'm very impressed since it seems the author is churning out a chapter per day
Character: This is where the story really shines. Each character is introduced and used very well. Each one has a personality and the author has done an incredible job making each introduced character so far both distinct and unique.
All in all, I'm excited to see where this story goes! - Gdub8167Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am really enjoying this story, it has adventure and a good plot line so far. A little quick to start but very informative about Tyrus's progress. Tyrus is a sponge for knowledge and learns very quickly. What i like too is that he has a penchant for getting himself in situations were he has to fight back or figure out a solution to survive. This is definitely a story to read. Thanks for your story.
- PreCursive (J.D. Campbell)Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I think one of my favorite genres in fantasy fiction involves young sorcerors and magic users. If thats something you love as well, then you should read The Rise of Tyrus.
Style: I can see the style that the author is going for very easily. Rise of Tyrus reminds me of modern contemporary magic fantasy fiction. I think it flows very well, at well.
Story: The story is very young, as young as the titular protagonist, but it's promising. Rise of Tyrus strikes me as a rags to riches story, except instead of merely seeking only wealth, Tyrus is seeking sorcerous power. Honestly, I enjoy stories that really focus on the magic, and this one definetly seems like one of those.
Grammar: Nothing really sticks out like a sore thumb, which is what you want. No egregious mistakes that make me want to drop the story. The only thing I thought was odd was that Tyrus has unexpedtely verbose word choice, for being a young orphan living in a shack in the woods. But that can be explained away both by him being the protagonist and needing to be special, or for the clarity of the reader.
Character: Tyrus's motivations are very clear. Even though he's a child, whats driving him is easy to see. I don't blame him for them, either. I would sure as hell want to become a rich and powerful sorceror as well, if I was a destitute orphan.
Overall, this seems like a promising story. You should check it out! - TheGreatGazpachoRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5[Review Swap]
Style: There were no stylistic decisions that took me out of the story. It was an overall smooth and enjoyable read.
Grammar: I saw no glaring issues when it came to grammatical errors; it was written very well and kept me engaged. My only small gripe would be to keep Tyrus's dialogue on the simpler side; being a young child in the woods with no formal education, I wouldn't expect him to have the largest vocabulary. But this a minor gripe that could be easily cast aside.
Story & Character: I enjoyed the overall flow of Tyrus's magical awakening, along with the added discovery of his sorcerous specialization. I'm very interested to see how this story delves deeper into the three major aspects of magic it introduces; I always enjoy when magic is expanded upon, and there's some theory to it to latch on to. I also liked the Wanderer's dynamic with Tyrus; aloof but very respectful to the young man that's had a rough life so far. I look forward to their relationship being expanded upon as the story unfolds. I'm also curious to see how Tyrus's heritage comes into play when interacting with other sorcerers, maybe some similar to him.
I look forward to the rest of this story. Keep writing. - Jimmyv100Royal Road★★★★ 4.0TLDR: a classic progression/coming of age story that hits all the tropes you would expect. Solidly written with some interesting mystery in the background, if you like this genre I recommend reading.
The story focuses on Tyrus, a 9 year old orphaned Demi human in a country full of humans. The set up is classic, the MC whose life can’t get any worse meets mysterious stranger who gives him a second chance. Nothing groundbreaking, but at the same time it is solidly written and made me interested in where the story would go.
Talking about the story, as mentioned above it hits all the classic tropes you could be expecting: adventurers, magic school, risky progression, commoner/noble drama, meeting helpful entities on side quests. If you’re looking for a solidly written progression/coming of age story, this author hits pretty much every trope that you could expect in these genres. Whether of not you like these tropes will be what makes you love/hate the story. Luckily I’m in the love camp, sometimes a classic story is just what you want!
Having said this, there is a level of intrigue explored alongside these classic story elements that keeps things a bit more spicy. The MC’s background and other mysterious and/or unsavoury individuals/groups have kept me interested in where the plot is going in the long run.
A short point about characters, I’ve seen two complaints in other reviews I want to comment on: that MC is weirdly suicidal, and that side characters are not explored well. For point 1, when you learn more about his origins, MC’s attitude towards combat/risk taking makes a lot more sense. For point 2, I would probably agree with this earlier in the story, but the author does well to start fleshing out the main side characters later on, I’m hoping this trend continues.
Grammar/style, I’d say this is one of the main aspects that made me drop a star. There have been points in the story where the prose becomes weirdly stilted for a paragraph or two before going back to no - Conrad StokesRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Disclaimer: This review is written for a review/comment swap with the author. I have read over 12,000 words.
You know, this is an interesting story given that it is well rounded with the fundamentals of what I would want to read in a story on here and has the heart of a web released fiction. What I mean by this is that by the authors own words in a comment, this story is expected to be 200 chapters (give or take) and you can see that framed up in the initial chapters.
Style/Story: This is one of the downsides of doing a review swap, because there is the risk that the main plot line does not pick up in the first 10k words. The MC certainly faced conflict and is introduced to the wider world, but there is not a long term goal established other than “get stronger so I can eat food and be comfortable”. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but rather is a style that matches with the long term plan of a web novel.
Some other comments on the story complained that it was too fast, yet here I am saying “where is the main hook”. I don’t think the author should change the way they write to accommodate the range of preferences on this site, since they appear to be going for a certain style that is fast, but deliberately so because there is so much ahead.
Characters: The characters are good, but again after only 12k words, I am not super invested in them. The argument could be made that the more you read, the more invested one becomes in the cast, but do you want to read more about the characters if they do not stand out immediately?
Furthermore, the MC, Tyrus, is a half blood Demi human 9 year old who is able to survive in the woods on his own and is a rare/unique type of sorcerer (this is in the blurb, no spoilers). Frankly this makes Tyrus immediately powerful without any sacrifice, they are innate traits after all. Does this make him less sympathetic? For me, it does.
There are cool training scenes where he learns to control his new powers, which in of itself is a hook to wa - CidolphusRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5Keep in mind that I’m reviewing this as if I I’m going through a trad-published book and not a web novel since I think honest feedback is important for an author even if it may sting a bit. This is also just my opinion so I hope anything I say doesn’t discourage the author.
From what I’ve seen in the start, the consensus from the people is that the story is moving too fast, but I think it’s rather the opposite. To me, the story is a bit slow for my preference. I don’t have a completely shot attention span where I read one chapter and instantly make judgements of the whole work (although I can usually get a feel if I’ll like it or not), as I don’t read web novels often so my opinion may differ greatly from the rest.
Nothing Tyrus does or the events that led to his current party really hooked me at all. It feels very typical and safe for a progression fantasy, which isn’t bad if you’re looking for that kind of thing, but I prefer really bombastic and exciting worlds that have a defining unique trait to them. The Wanderer serves as a sort of mystery character to make you interested in his origins and to entice you to read on in, but I don't think his presence lasted long enough to really be invested in his mystery. I think this is mainly because his personality is pretty typical wise, mysterious sage-esque type, but I just couldn’t really feel drawn to the world because of that and for a couple of other reasons.
First: The style. The best word I can describe it is “it does the job”. It’s short and choppy at times with the author mainly utilizing short sentences and the language used doesn’t really invoke anything or draw a super detailed image in my mind.
Second: The characters and story doesn’t really offer anything super special or unique that separates it from the others (except for Tyrus being a Beastfolk which I think is cool). You have the typical trope of a poor/abandoned kid just trying to survive in the world being discovered by a hidden master and discovering - boonytoopRoyal Road★★★ 2.5Quite a bland anime style prose.
Very 2d MC.
Undeveloped side characters, despite some pov chapters.
Grammar is a bit rough at times.
The story, despite saying its supposed to be a slow burn, just bounces from fight to fight. 40 chapters in and there's been like 8 life or death fights, half of them the mc volunteers for.
