Description
Landar is reborn in the body of a young boy to a peasant family in the western duchy of the central human kingdom. In the heart of an oppressive economic system, starting from the lowliest of places, he will fight to build on the foundations his family has laid for him. All while fighting off an illness someone like him isn't supposed to have. Sakura lived a life of near slavery. Her low social credit rating prevented her from improving her station. When she died she woke up in the body of a girl from a powerful family within the far eastern Jade Empire. However, not everything is as it seems. Even those of the highest places must bow to someone. Sakura and Landar must choose which masters to serve, as civil war and invasion brew in the far corners of their world. While a threat from the far north once thought long defeated begins rising again. Only through power can they ascend. Only through power can they set the world to right, and prevent or correct the injustices they have seen first hand. And only through power, can they protect all that they have grown to love. The only question is, can they seize it in time?"ABOUT THE STORY * Super creamy LitRPG with growing crunchy elements in later installments.* Weekly ReleasesMonday - Wednesday - Friday* You can find early chapters over on mySubstackusing that link, for $1 / month (if you don't use that link, its $5/month).TO CLARIFY: I have between 5-10 chapters ahead on my Substack then what is available here on Royal Road. The characters are interesting and what we've seen so far hints at a grand tale. The challenge will be to keep the scope from getting out of control with so many story layers and locations.
- TransveraiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story follows two protagonists which ia always a fifty/fifty when it comes to writing, but I can say, although Sakura's perspective takes a bit to get interesting(in my opinion), that the author did a pretty good job nailing it, and managed to coalece what, at the moment, is two very different styles that corespond to the fact the the two mcs are from different areas of the world.
One perspective being a western magic/cultivation fantasy, the other being an eastern cultivation fantasy, with a slight hint to magic(at the time of writing the mc in question hasn't gotten actual magic), it makes one think of, "how in the nine hells is it that the author is planning to merge the perspectives into one area? What will that look like?" It really gets me excited for the future of this novel, and gets me engrossed in thoughts about how cultures might collide.
The overarching story hasn't yet reared it's head, but for the variety of small arcs it's pretty good. Again the Sakura perspective takes a bit to actually get to plot things, and stuff that is actually interesting, perhaps a consequence of the character being in a place where they have access to knowledge so easily? Meanwhile the Landor perspective brings me great amounts of endorphins to read, the character spends a healthy amount of time fucking around and finding out as a result, as well as time with family and interacting with characters around them. It leads to great development and greater emotional connection.
The grammer is usually correct with a very rare mistake and as far as I've seen the author is willing to correct mistakes, pretty great considering chapter length and release rate at the time of writing (3/week).
Character writing is pretty good, but every now and then you'll see the characters behave oddly in some ways, but that could be considered as emotional interference. Overall pretty good. I wish that there would be more charcter development on Sakura, who hasn't experienced any real tribulations - HenkutsuRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0An engaging, duotagonist story with three interweaving plots, thou as of chapter 46 they have yet to meet.
The story is essentially broken into two points of view, switching every seven or so chapters with an occasional pov from the gods to show the impetus of events. If you hate multi pov, this is not the story for you, as the contrasting and contradictory knowledge and experiences gained by the two protagonists is a large part of the world building.
The two views help with story pacing as one is far less dark than the other, allowing a breather instead of the constant angst spiral that many stories with tragedy suffer from, without needing to lean on “gag” characters.
The magic system is an interesting blend of East and West resulting in an uncommon form I can only describe as slow growth cultivation mage litRPG, if the ‘system’ ceased to exist and much was forgotten. No blue boxes here!
On a downside, there are many places where a word has obviously been autocorrected incorrectly, breaking immersion to figure out what a sentence was supposed to mean. I am guessing the author is writing on their phone?
All said, I am enjoying it and can’t wait for more! - Jay009991Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I would not say that this is my best novel till date but it is special in itself.
The characters have distinct personalities, and neither of the major characters acts like a child comprising to an average RPG novel.
Just don't stop writing this book in the midst, please. I would like to see it through, at the very least. - Jeremy001Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5The POV changes are neat and the experiences therein are different enough that its a nice change of pace, not just two perspectives of the same thing at the chapter of my current progress. The magic system is cool and the cultrual practices of the peoples are intriguing.
I definitely reccomend you read! - FlamingFalconRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I really wanted to like this story. The start was really promising and created an interesting premise for 2 strong main characters.
However, it fell into the trap of actually having 1 strong pov and 1 weak pov. The weak pov only feels that way because of the sheer amount of royalty and family it introduces that it feels like a glorified exposition. And puts behind the potential that character had from the prologue.
Now this weaker pov wouldn’t necessarily be an issue, since there is a clear direction of events. And when the main characters inevitably meet up it would be great
But quite frankly, it commits the switch characters at a cliff hanger for a very extended period of time sin. Which due to how it’s crafted is a kick in the teeth and makes me not be able to read it. (Because if you skip it you get confused, since the character and world is reveals is important.).
-if the switches occured at a lul in the action it wouldn’t be as big a deal but the “ugh it’s a her chapter” paired with the “I want to know what happens next” does not create a I want to read this story feeling.
If they were better placed, it would definitely be one of my favourite stories on RR.
That being said, since this is an opinionated gripe the story still gets 4*s since, it’s well crafted in spite of it. - TurkeyLurkeyRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0The concepts and themes that Max Hall uses are fairly explored, but are used in a way that is fresh. I think the original idea Mister Hall had was a sort of Xianxia meets Progression Fantasy, and he has blended them very well so far. This is currently chapter 7 of book two, but there seems to be quite a bit more to go (in typical Xianxia style). Despite being a book in, it yet tastes unripe. At this point you can see the ingredients start to mix, and you know that it's going to be a cake if it gets finished and not something you'll have to mouth down with a smile because your kid wanted to make you breakfast on your day off for the first time ever.
The characters are a bit thin as of now, but, reiterating that it still feels like the early bit of this novel from here - they're not yet supposed to be complete. Max is doing a great job so far fleshing them out gradually, all the while letting the audience see exactly what they're putting in their mouths to gain those pounds.
For those that despise multiple POV stories or timeline shifts, skip this. The POVs are myriad (only two MCs though), and the story does kick off the first chapter about where we're at now with one other skip of note we're still waiting to catch up to. This means you have the whole first book and 5-6ish chapters to go through to figure out WTF is going on when the story starts. I don't take issue with this as I feel the story still has good flow, but I know it drives some people up the wall.
Additionally, there are many spelling mistakes or incorrect homophone uses just about every single chapter. Usually consistent in which words are used/spelt incorrectly, but not always. I do not refer to Max's energy system stuff, as he can do what he likes with that, but more mundane words and descriptors. If you routinely ignore or don't notice spelling or grammar issues like that and can deal with skips back and forth a bit, give it a go. The story terminus promises to be fairly interesting so far. If consi - StrangestQuarkRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I like this story quite a bit, the language is easy to read, the setting is interesting and the way it slowly turns into an actual LitRPG is very unique. That being said, it is also the most frustrating story I've read in ages, for one sole reason and that is that to me, Sakura's story feels like an un-skippable ad. It's roughly the same number of chapters from her POV and It contains key pieces of world building, meaning you can't just not read it, but for me, the plot is WAY less interesting and the setting is completely unrelated to Landar's which makes it even more irritating.
Overall, if you like both Female lead wuxia stories and Male lead High fantasy LitRPGs in equal measure this will be an awesome read, but if you favour either you will probably get frustrated due to the constant interruptions. - WOLF CRECENTRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This is an interesting story with a lot of familiar concepts meshed together pretty well. Check it out if you like reincarnated cultivation fantasy.
Style:
The prose is fairly simple and easy to understand. There are 2 main protagonists with the view points of other characters sprinkled in. The story is written in the 3rd person perspective. Overall the style is alright, not bad but not good enough to warrant any particular praise.
Story:
This story is set in a blend of a western medieval fantasy and a wuxia world. The world feels somewhat lived in with its various factions and their history as well as their interactions with each other. Since the story is relatively new the world sometimes seems somewhat archetypical but as the chapters roll out this feeling somewhat subsides as the world develops to gain a flavour of itself. And even when this is not the case and the story was just starting out it gave the world a familiarity instead of lazy story elements cobbled together from multiple sources. There is a lack of any unique author created aspects, but it provides an interesting mishmash of its various inspirations.
Overall this story is a mixed bag. The highs are quite high. I have felt joy, sadness and pain for some characters and any story that can invoke such emotions is doing something right. But most of the chapters are just good with some being somewhat info dumpy and a little boring. But the good news is that the chapters are getting better and the new ones are all very good.
Grammar:
The grammar is where this story suffers. There are a lot of typos and other small grammatical errors. There are more chapters with errors than ones without. The good news is that the author does fix a lot of these errors and the readers do manage to catch most of them and comment them out. So if you are hopping on this story somewhat late, most of the errors might be fixed. But nonetheless simply using Grammarly would catch these errors and stop the errors from distracting f - Sam WilliamsRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5The first few chapters are really good. Landor is interesting and the world so far feels very well designed. It's magical and I'm curious to learn more but unlike alot of fiction on this site it still feels grounded and realistic.
In saying that so far the Sakura chapters are super boring. I'm hopeful that this will change and if it does I will come back and edit this review. But as it stands I'm just reading through them as quickly as I can to get back to the good stuff.
