- mreedudRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Cool story set in contemporary settings. Gives vibes like Dresden files.
Grammer: solid. Pacing a bit on slower side with sudden explosive action. The lead seems like the prototypical bastard anti hero we like to root for. Character development: decent. Updates timely.
Will feel like a breadth of fresh air in the saturated market of lit rpg. - AshicleRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I feel like this story should have a lot more traction than it currently does, perhaps just a matter of time.
The things I like the most here are the immersive noir feel and the random self jabs at litrpg and movie tropes. Given the authors' style however, my personal opinion is that this title would be stronger without any reference to levels or characters calling out attacks in their mind.
It's not the most litrpg, but it's also not trying to be. I think that's great. Hope there's no blue boxes in the future!
Most of the characters are complex, starting a tropes and growing into their own thing. Some are still at the trope stage and I would like to see them develop more. - Darkness GamingRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am a big fan of all the things I mentioned above and this novel is a great ccombination of them. It starts off a bit slow and grounded but after book 1 it really takes off. But don't get me wrong when I say a bit slow, there is still a lot of gunslinging and of coure killing ALL the demons. All in all a great read, highly recommended.
- Sum1whoismeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Just because the medium is good noir does not mean that there is not a fantastic story if, like a monster, noir is not something you actively seek and consume - an amazing read, no vermilion vexillology imo. Doom guy plus Harry Dresden plus laconic hero a la a Max Payne or a Jack Reacher or a cowboy King Leonidas.
I'm writing this review to strike while the iron is hot, as I've just finished the story and the ending is fresh in my mind, though I believe I've been reading since very near the beginning so my opinion may be rose-tinted.
Tongue-in-cheek (or -sticking-straight-out) jokes and some paranormal puns shading a colorful story with plenty of dark humor.
Fade-to-black romance that may leave you blushing.
Villains, and haunted heroes, that may have you seeing scarlet.
As with near-about every other story I've ever read, I'm sure some ruby-in-the-rough to faceted-gem edits could be applied, already this is on par or better than many books published by major publishers I have /read/ in the past - nothing specific to underline in ink.
To conclude, yes, you caught me pun-handed, and my apologies if nonsensical; I couldn't stop once I started and went too far.
Below is a paragraph that absolutely didn't make the cut, but I already wrote it so why not:
A character possessed by their revenge and driven by hot rage, at times cursed with the madness of Alice's Queen, spiced and peppered by the end with a fast and furious paraphrase (of mine, not the author) "I don't have friends; I have
family
blood", the aforementioned raspberry pancakes, and a strawberry-jam sickly-sweet spirit (who also rips and tears with the best of them). - Abyss 404Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0i picked this up by chance, but literally binged it until the end, it is really good, the pace (which seems a little rushed at the end, but that is the point), the characters, the fights scenes, oh my GOD the fight scenes, are all done masterfully
thank you, good sir, for writing this, and letting me read it, i have fully enjoyed it, i feel connected with every character, even the villains are more than interesting and memorable, it ties up in such a satisfying way - Nines41Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This series just makes sense. The world building is a little silly but it all works out and creates an environment and conflict that is very interesting to read about. This story is full of mysteries that go on long enough to keep you hooked but not so long as to where they become dull and uninteresting. The main character is a joy to read about and a lot of fun to see what antics his challenged sanity get up to, with a lot of action and fights at every corner. I really recommend this story, definitely worth giving a read.
- SlappaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Having caught up with this noir work of art's latest chapter, officially finishing book two... I can say that Eric is the kind of protagonist more stories need. I have loved his journey so far, and I hope the author keeps writing about it until it reaches a satisfying ending. That's the highest praise you can really give any story, no?
- OnlyBliss :)Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5Kinda underrated imo. Just tells the story of some miserable guy hunting demons. Only it seems like demons are pretty complicated as well, and killing them all might not be the solution? Who knows even after all the published chapters we have only tasted small parts of the big story. My one criticism would be that mc is just winning too much. Basically every fight scene has no stakes because you know he will come out on top regardless of odds. So I just skipped a lot of the fighting cuz it was kinda pointless.
- Nibbler ManRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0What a strange story. Giving it 4 stars because I enjoyed reading most of it.
The problem with reviewing web series is that they often are not finished, and as such, I cannot give a review with full accuracy.
In a noir story, I would expect a slow-burn type with an overarching narrative, more scarce action, thought out and reasonable relationships with an emphasis on deception and subtlety. Cloak and dagger as such.
Redd & Wight is not really anything like that.
The pacing is rather breakneck, and I think the story suffers because of it.
Once you make the demons human, then what becomes of the premise?
I like the chaos of hell and Eric's madness, but by far my biggest problem in this story is
Pearl. If the whole thing is a big deception, then it fits. I don't think it is however.
It always annoys me when you have incredibly high level characters in very low level environments. Pearl gave her true name to Eric and yet it doesn't matter at all. It may as well have not happened. What was supposed to be the fulcrum of their deal, and as such the whole story, ended up having no impact.
Pearl replacing Eric's dead wife and child as a motivation just feels kinda antithetical to the premise of the story. If that was a Demonic deception well then, well played author.
Pearl doesn't fit into the feel for me. Too sweet, too powerful. but mostly too present. OP demon wife wrangling the walking catastrophe that is Eric's life. At the end, not what I expected.
