- JD_TontsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0As far as LitRPG stories go, Reborn to Devour executes its premise very well. It incorporates concepts from other LitRPG's like Dungeons and Leveling systems, while also including consequences for dying in a reality where you'd think Death would be trivialised due to the fact that respawning is part of the universe.
Reborn to Devour's universe is pretty well established, there's clear motivations to both level up and even to gatekeep and stay in the particular layer of Hell the demons of hell find themselves in. It's all revealed gradually and organically, everything from the LitRPG's mechanics of Hell to various factions, skills and bonuses that are given or earned. There's plenty of other aspects of the setting, but I don't want to reveal everything about the setting, just know it's established well and isn't overly complicated and hard to keep track of.
The character's introduced throughout the story are great, we aren't solely given our protagonist's POV, we get to spend chapters with characters he meets and allies with, throughout the story. Our main protagonist Ishmael is done well, his backstory is gradually revealed, helping to build and expand upon his character and why he's in Hell. Other characters also show their own depth and complexities, particularly due to the fact that many characters are also from different periods in Earth's history.
Ishamel has obviously gotten the lions share of attention, given he is the protagonist, his influence on other characters is felt and seen, particularly during the arc on the Train. But there are plenty of examples from earlier in the story as well. I highly recommend Reborn to Devour, it's a good read, especially for fans of LitRPG's. Chapter length remains decently long as well, so there's plenty to read and enjoy each chapter. - K9Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Ishmael is evil, plain and simple. Except for he’s not simple. He’s different from the average royal road psychopath, he feels way more real.
In the snatches of his backstory or recalling of memories he talks about casual life without it being cringe-worthy or forced.
When reading a novel, there are various factors I examine and am especially critical of. The most important of these factors for me are dialogue, world building and writing style. The big three.
In Reborn To Devour the author leaves us wanting for nothing as they execute everything required of a good novel flawlessly.
Their grammar is perfect, or as close to it as possible. As a reader, I say the writing has an impeccable flow that I find easy to immerse myself in without replacing words to make it more sensible.
The world of Reborn To Devour is well fleshed out and so far has been naturally introduced to us over time through conversations between characters, memories and hints from the System in this story.
Speaking of the System, it’s been made wonderfully as well. It uses elements commonly found in other stories but adds on much more to those common themes making it very good, and very distinct.
My two annoyances with the story is that Ishmael will never be able to get revenge on his old employers and the health bar, Whenever I see a health bar in stories it immediately makes the magical System worse for me.
Luckily in this story the health bar plays a very minor role, only serving to give the reader an approximation of our main characters predicament and (for me) rests comfortably in the back of my mind.
Good luck to all, happy writing to authors, and in case I don’t see you, good afternoon, good evening and good night ;) - MikmjRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is great with a bunch of interesting and diverse side characters, and the MC is actually "evil" and not an anti-hero. I also really like that the system is presented with custom images and not with bold text or blue screens being more pleasing to the eyes and finding myself looking forward to the next one and giving the story a feeling of greater quality. The system on itself is also great, especially notoriety giving various buffs according to how notorious someone was when they were alive, and changing with notoriety gained in hell.
- AutophagiaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Characters are extremely well fleshed out, combat is exciting, and I love how Ishmael interacts with "hell". Just keep in mind that everything takes a backseat to story telling, be it the numbers, fleshing out the setting, or any overly complicated strategizing. At some point stats and min maxing are disregarded for pure bloody carnage.
- MillowRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So far the story is awesome. I love the unique depiction of hell, and the personality of the many charecters the Mc meets. I feel like most people would depict everybody in hell to be some sort of insane criminal but in this story it's different. The author starts off the story in the early chapters by showcasing who could end up in such a place by showing charecters convinced they are good and did no wrong, many even working to build some sort of normalcy.
I also love the worldbuilding in hell and how nobody can die, because the point of hell is eternal suffering. There are also some creative environments, and issues with the system which can be abused by the demons. Some of the demonic charecters also have a way to show their sin through how they look after transformation, such as the Mc, giving a hint to everybody about the evil they committed.
The action of the story is great and well thought out, the Mc is smart and isn't afraid of taking advantage of situations. The action isn't a constant but there is a lot of it.
The Mc unlike other insane mcs has a well fleshed out backstory and he often thinks about the things he did in the past, making him feel human, and actually giving him a proper persona. It gives the story a deeper meaning and connection with the characters. There are what I believed to be hidden meanings through the story shown through descriptions, and it adds a layer of mystery to what will happen next. - BallChinnedBratRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Well written and solid plot with what is so far a diverse environment for your standard murderhobo protagonist. Our main character seems fully developed and his interactions with other eternally damned people definitely make the story. Progression seems like a very standard evolution litrpg so far but I'm Interested in seeing where we go from here.
- UnFazedReviewer107Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is a great story that's exceptionally straightforward and a great read for a rainy day. Throughout the entire story the main cast introduced has been really fun to get to know, especially the dog priest. The ending was even better and extremely satisfying to read, I genuinely hope this gets a manga adaptation
- ZentraxiusRoyal Road★★ 2.0Too many POV changes/filler arcs, some of them were attempted least tagged for easy skipping. Some time skips between the different books along with a severe lack of status updates. Allegedly their stats have changed massively and they were never updated or shared with the reader, entire skills are never explained, the most important change/evolution i had been waiting for and looking forward to seemed to have been skipped over entirely during a time skip, it felt like the author just didn't feel like doing the LitRPG section for a while but this did blank during the part I had been looking for since the beginning of the story and left such a bad taste in my mouth as a result I dont even want to finish it anymore, even if the status is brought up in the very next chapter at this point it is far too late.
Ultimately the pacing and story were great until about halfway through the 2nd book and then it felt like a different tone and direction entirely, one that was just all around worse in every area, including spelling errors starting to show up. I'd guess they just wanted to rush it out and finish the story they lost interest in, happens all the time but still a let down - KingslyApeRoyal Road★ 1.0The synopsis of the book makes it seem like a lot of fighting scene and devouring enemies in order to grow stronger but it does not seem that way at all. This is more like a snooze fest of fight scenes. Additionally, the main character is a poor character of a villain. He feels more like an anti-hero. In that case, the genre should be changed.
- ElkstraRoyal Road★ 0.5Save yourself the time. There are far better options out there if you would like to avoid the, continued and boring, narrative of Christian dogma for hell. This barely breaches exploration creativity and instead preaches repentance through negative scripture. It was fun to start but religious pedanticism by chapter 20. I do not recommend wasting time on this one as I'm already wishing for my 9hrs back.
This story is a reimagined story of the "journey through hell" with the protagonist seeming the worst of humanity but seemingly coming out he better physically, mentally and spiritually. The author borrows from powerful and continued tales, like those of Mulan, Sisyphus, and Jobe to present a world of wonder...that's already explored.
I loved the start, the idea of an unrepentant person making their way through a world of violence appealed to me outside the normal Slice-of-Life isekais. That said, I tired of it very quickly with the constant biblical references and shoved-down-your-throat stories about hell. This quickly desolved into a fantastical-version, of an already boring telling, story: that being of Christianity. And it's steeped in callbacks and amorphisms that just make one cringe.
